Christmas travel?

Torvean32 · 24/10/2020 21:58

I was just wondering if anybody is planning to travel to family over Christmas.
I live in what i believe will be Tier 1 wanting to travel to an area with no restriction in England to see my dad at Christmas .
I am a single adult on my own as is he. I've not seen any family all year.
I'd have liked to fly directly but they cancelled all flights except from Edinburgh.

I would find it really unfair if ppl are allowed to travel at October but not December.
I just feel a bit down after Jason Leitch's latest comment.

Unless it's illegal and is a bit more difficult a decision, I suggest you make your own risk assessment and take it from there.

Personally I'd go. For me, the benefit far outweighs the risk

fuckfuckingcovid19 · 24/10/2020 22:44

^ I agree

cdtaylornats · 24/10/2020 22:53

I predict the lockdown will last until the start of December.

Lockdown at Christmas will just be disobeyed. The sheer amount of disobedience will overwhelm the police and once people decide they aren't playing the game over travel everything else will fall by the wayside.

No government can stand if the rule of law breaks especially the pretend devolved ones.

Torvean32 · 24/10/2020 23:27

Thank you. You've made me feel much more positive.

I know you're saying they've cancelled all flights apart from Edinburgh but my friend's been flying u from London to Inverness to see family throughout. I guess if there's not the demand they'll take flights off , maybe that's what happened.

rookiemere · 25/10/2020 07:35

@Torvean32 they can say what they want, but the actions don't support it.
There is no money available to support airlines if they close them down, so they will remain open albeit with limited flights because the operators won't run the less profitable ones.
Or you drive down as they can't close the border.

JorisBonson · 25/10/2020 07:38

I'm in England but all my family are on the west coast (central belt). Had planned all along to spend Christmas at home but go up for new year, and God knows what will happen now.

Following this thread with interest.

waitforitwaitforit · 25/10/2020 08:03

I'm not. I'll be too disappointed if it gets cancelled like everything bloody else this year.

grumplass · 25/10/2020 09:08

I'm sure they will have to make a decision at a uk level because of students. Hopefully you'll be able to go.

OOAOML · 25/10/2020 15:54

We won't because we think the risk is too high, mainly because the kids are both in high school which I think is a 'fingers crossed' risky environment. We have one seriously ill relative but if they want immediate family together that's 4 or 5 households. Then after the break my daughter is back in class with someone with an immune compromised ill parent. Have come to the conclusion the risks are too much.

That's our situation though. I hope options are there for people in better situations and especially that those in single-person households can travel and meet up.

Torvean32 · 25/10/2020 16:14

NS says it's a big priority to get students home so if they can then i should be able to as well.

I cant drive as it's way to far to go on my own. Plus I've no highway experience.
They didn't even try to get flights booked here. They released them. Then 2 weeks later they've cancelled all flights from here until March. I think they'll lose money as ppl from highlands/grampian and Tayside all come home. We also have much less Covid cases.

If I'm stuck here over Christmas I'll be on my own and i will be beyond miserable. I really need this break.

Unless either we or they have Covid my family will fly from a most likely tier 1 area to our central belt who knows what tier we will be zone. They will have to fly into Edinburgh as there is no Glasgow flight and I will drive to pick them up.

I really don’t care what rules we will break as this will most likely break them if they don’t get away after not being able to see us all year due to Covid.

JorisBonson · 25/10/2020 19:32

I didn't realise all the Glasgow flights were cancelled!

Torvean32 · 25/10/2020 19:54

I'm talking about Logan air. Other airlines maybe different. They wont gurantee flights will go ahead though.

Where are you trying to get to? Could you not train it as they'll very likely still be on?

anon444877 · 25/10/2020 20:38

I would go in your shoes unless it becomes illegal as you are two people on your own - I'd probably do trains though as there are so many more options for cancellations.

Torvean32 · 25/10/2020 22:16

Trains are my worst nightmare for cancellation. Still cant book any after the train accident outside Stonehaven a couple of months ago as the repairs are not finished. Id have to be on a train for 13 hours to get there. And i worry about how they would control passenger numbers.
This is why i got excited about direct flights, until they cancelled them.

@Torvean32 Logannaire mentioned on their website about keeping flights to Edinburgh going over the busy Christmas period and resuming some to Glasgow so you may wish to give them a phone if Glasgow is the preferred destination.

I do know that for some locations, like my family’s, they will keep flights going but it may go to Edinburgh or have additional stops. Not ideal but in my case it’s the only option.

readsalotgirl63 · 25/10/2020 22:58

@torvean32 could you drive to Edinburgh and fly from there ? I don't see why you shouldn't spend Christmas with your dad.

Torvean32 · 26/10/2020 00:18

There's only flights from Edinburgh right now. I dont have a car, and hire cost would be too much as I'd need it for 11 days. I've never driven on the motorway in 14 years of having a licence, shocking i know.

I'm thinking of the bus from here to Edinburgh as they can control passenger numbers better. Then hotel overnight and flight the next morning.
My dad would then pick me up at the airport as its 45 mins on the motorway to his. Then there's a self catering place on a farm to stay it. Not even got plans to meet other extended family. I feel it's safe while at the same time trying to keep other's safe.

Callisto1 · 26/10/2020 11:45

The trains from Edinburgh down south have been ok in terms of passenger numbers so far.

We are hoping that the virus numbers will be low enough since we're in a bubble and those should be ok even in a lockdown. If you are a single household you can have a bubble also. I can't see how they will stop you from travelling to England if they are ok with non local bubbles.

The tricky thing for us is school finishing so late and the possible infection risk. But that's completely unpredictable at the moment 😔.

trockodile · 26/10/2020 13:11

I flew from Aberdeen to Heathrow 2 weeks ago with BA. Absolutely no problems.

grumplass · 26/10/2020 16:43

@Torvean32 could you hire a car from a big company and drop off so you just need 2 days instead of 11?

Torvean32 · 26/10/2020 22:22

@Callisto1 when does school finish? I'd originally planned to go early on the 19th but that flight was cancelled.

Thanks @grumplass. If i was driving on just A roads i would feel ok about driving to Edinburgh. I've never driven on a motorway though and I'd be really nervous to do that on my own.

You don't have to drive on motorways to get to most places, it just takes longer. You can do a Google map and tick the box for no highways and it will give you another route. Motorways are actually the safest roads to drive on. My thing is joining via slip roads :(.
