Scottish schools opening

I was ready for schools opening, but this new research has given me pause for thought. I think this came out after Sturgeon's decision. What do you all think?

www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/07/31/georgia-children-covid-outbreak/#click=t.co/Y9gSG9zENz

Quote from the article:

"A new report suggests that children of all ages are susceptible to coronavirus infection and may also spread it to others — a finding likely to intensify an already fraught discussion about the risks of sending children back to school this fall.

The analysis, released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, details an outbreak at a sleep-away camp in Georgia last month in which 260 children and staffers — more than three-quarters of the 344 tested — contracted the virus less than a week after spending time together in close quarters. The children had a median age of 12. The camp had required all 597 campers and staff members to provide documentation that they had tested negative for the virus before coming. Staff were required to wear masks, but children were not."

“The parents” haven’t gone for any option. It’s been the decision of the Scottish government. I’d like them back full time but I thought part time should be the default for a couple of months in the first instance. Maybe until the October week. But it is what it is and we just have to hope it’ll be OK given the low numbers of virus currently. I’m not a fan of Nicola S or the SNP but if kids’ schooling is a vote loser racking up thousands of deaths as a result of them being back would be more so. No one is saying there’s no risk but that the balance of risk that the SG have made the decision on is that it’s better for them to be back FT now. If I was in England I’d be more worried than here for sure given they have many more cases.

WouldBeGood · 12/08/2020 22:02

No one is saying children can’t catch the virus. It’s proportionate now in Scotland to start the schools. Taking into account the risk of not doing so too.

SengaStrawberry · 12/08/2020 22:03
@SengaStrawberry the problem is that it doesn't take long for that figure to become out of control.
But that’s always going to be the case until the virus fucks off completely one way or another. Or forever if it never does. This is why the other measures in place and contact tracing/isolating is also important and also us all “being good” when kids aren’t in school to keep cases low as best we can everywhere.

Honestly I am apprehensive as well but I keep thinking back to March when the virus was rife and we were in my son’s school for 2 events just before lockdown with hundreds of kids and parents milling around all over the place. I did feel wary then as I had already stopped socialising and was wfh and get it was just business as usual there, and although I don’t know everything, I certainly didn’t hear of teachers and kids and their families dropping like flies all over the place as a result. We are in a better place now than then surely.

SengaStrawberry · 12/08/2020 22:12

Fwiw I think as soon as we see clusters in schools they’ll be back PT anyway

WouldBeGood · 12/08/2020 22:18

I think it will all be fine.

You haven't spent any time reading the Us for Them progaganda then! lucky you We have to go back. We could do this with mandatory mask wearing, like in shops. Weekly testing for staff, like in care homes. Then we might stay open for longer as fewer would get sick.
SengaStrawberry · 12/08/2020 22:34

Usforthem are nutcases. I joined and left verrryy quickly!

I think so too. I think that coming into winter we'll fall back into blended learning.
SengaStrawberry · 12/08/2020 22:37

I don’t think they’ll close again, at least not for 5
Months. Maybe a few weeks tagged to holidays and part time.

DorisLessingsLesson · 12/08/2020 22:46

But the advice was self-isolate unless you become very ill and hardly anyone was offered tests.
We had friends who returned from the ski resort that the super spreader had visited. Our friends and one of their DC became ill. Their GP said they probably had it but wouldn't test. So we wouldn't know infection rates for DCs and teachers unless they had been hospitalised.

SengaStrawberry · 12/08/2020 22:55

But you’d have heard of local cases/people self isolating etc, at least with the amount of bloody gossips there are round here.

SengaStrawberry · 12/08/2020 22:57

Fucks sake @Mistressiggi I just had a quick look at usforthem for the first time in months! Children now being “denied a human right” to water and a picture of Oliver Twist! Why did I look?!

I'll have what you're on.
Mistressiggi · 12/08/2020 23:22

Senga I'm glad they didn't lure you in Grin
The story about the Glasgow cases is "fake news" apparently.

I left as soon as the first anti vaxxer chemtrail type piped up. Nope!

More year groups back today. There were groups of high school pupils on every corner (not social distancing). Again, only 1 person wearing a mask. I'm so stressed about it. I'd much rather DC were in once per week or every second week than this complete disaster.

What use to man or beast is kids going to school once a week? They’d be better staying shut!

I think you need to try and get a sense of perspective, in the kindest way. 1 in 18000 people have this virus now and yes there will always be a risk and there will always be cases/clusters but not enough to deny kids an education. The chances of any of these kids you saw having it will be very, very low so not sure how a “complete disaster” will ensue.

dementedpixie · 13/08/2020 11:55

We've now had an email that the kids have to go back to wearing ties and blazers. Every other school in the LA was wearing them, just seemed to be our school that wasn't. Just S1, S4, S5 and S6 in today then all back tomorrow

Doesn't sound like the teacher had contact with any children so that's a bonus I suppose

Hardly surprising given the Aberdeen cluster.

frasersmummy · 13/08/2020 12:19

I cant believe they've had to shut a school already!! I know it didnt start in the school but this is what we are going to be dealing with all year.. Education is going to suffer big time!

Wbeezer · 13/08/2020 12:49

I live round the corner from a private school, sport camps all week, no social distancing at all, but then the kids didnt bother with social distancing as soon as they were let out earlier in the summer and have been drinking in groups outside for months..

chocciechocface · 13/08/2020 13:11

I'm a little surprised; Peterhead is a fair bit north of Aberdeen.

NS saying school outbreaks "inevitable"

so the safety measures aren't enough then?

More likely they will shut one school like in Peterhead (which I thought was south of Aberdeen Blush) but everyone else carry on as normal.
