New thread as the last one was getting full. Feel free to discuss, moan, speculate on anything to do with Scottish schools and what may/not be happening.

Oh no, not certain until the 29th.

There is guidance to come apparently.

Mistressiggi · 23/07/2020 14:08

What is he on, Birdie?

BananaTreeBirdie · 23/07/2020 14:08

I got him via the BBC Scotland coronavirus update page.

BananaTreeBirdie · 23/07/2020 14:15

Well, he seems to be flinging money at the problem. Cautiously impressed. Liked the idea of test and trace having a schools branch (did I pick that up right?).

We need to see that guidance about the physical and logistical needs asap though.

Mistressiggi · 23/07/2020 14:17

Thank you.
I'm trying to imagine how I can achieve the 2m distance. If I sit at my desk I could I suppose, not sure how I'd maintain discipline that way or support. I wouldn't be able to go through the corridors at changeover at all.

britINscotland · 23/07/2020 14:19

Does that mean all teachers will wear masks then, as 2m might be hard to do (especially in secondary)?

BananaTreeBirdie · 23/07/2020 14:21

2m is nearly impossible, I agree.

britINscotland · 23/07/2020 14:21

or maybe a visor?

What if kids are playing up at the back of the classroom?

I can't hear the video very well of JS. There's a bit of an echo or something.

britINscotland · 23/07/2020 14:22

"only 42" under 15s caught coronavirus

That's more than I thought actually and I don't think 42 is an okay figure personally.

BananaTreeBirdie · 23/07/2020 14:24

I can’t understand what he said about North Lanarkshire.

Mistressiggi · 23/07/2020 14:25

Wasn't it that only 42 were hospitalised, not just confirmed cases?

BananaTreeBirdie · 23/07/2020 14:26

Apparently the visor isn’t much use without the mask.

Individuals can wear masks but the science doesn’t support making it mandatory?! Why is it mandatory in Asda then?

Mistressiggi · 23/07/2020 14:27

Kids at the back can do whatever they want! I could not walk down there to collect a phone or break up a fight. To avoid me all a student has to do is walk behind another child! If all the pupils were 2m apart it is actually easier as you can briefly move through the gap, but since they are all less than 1m apart you would really be getting close if you walk past.

Mistressiggi · 23/07/2020 14:28

Won't the mask just protect the kids from me? Not me from the 25 16+ year olds?

BananaTreeBirdie · 23/07/2020 14:30

I wonder what happened to the oar things they used on Gladiators- the newest behaviour management technique? Sanitised of course.

I was taking it as the children wearing masks too..

Blueberryham · 23/07/2020 14:34

I think it was 42 were hospitalised which is actually quite a high number really. Is that for Scotland or uk, I am not sure

Mistressiggi · 23/07/2020 14:37

Scotland

Blueberryham · 23/07/2020 14:41

Doesn’t fill me with confidence really. So it does affect some children badly then

BananaTreeBirdie · 23/07/2020 14:46

I wonder if it was 42 individuals or a bad local cluster.

redsky75 · 23/07/2020 14:52

42 in Scotland as far as I can see...that does seem quite high? Higher than I would have guessed anyway

britINscotland · 23/07/2020 15:05

I hope that 42 gets questioned!

And is it really mandatory in Asia to wear masks or was it not just already culturally expected due to pollution etc (and thus easier to implement)?

The secondary guidance is v unclear.

Mistressiggi · 23/07/2020 15:33

He (JS) was saying risk assessments were done - from my own experience, our risk assessments related solely to the 2m, blended learning plan. There was no time to do assessments for the all-in approach.
Shielding's just stopped then?

Mistressiggi · 23/07/2020 15:34

I am very relieved he was clear we can wear masks if we want, though it will obviously be a lot less effective if others don't copy.

Sassenach85 · 23/07/2020 16:02

I was under the impression that wearing a mask was a courtesy to those near you and nothing to Do with your own well being?

RaraRachael · 23/07/2020 16:35

According to our HT, councils will be issued with a 30-40 page document following JS's announcement on the 30th. Each council will then pass on the recommendations to their schools - will this mean that all authorities will be doing the same thing? And all this will be meant to be ready in 2 days before pupils return.

Any chance we can keep this thread for discussing what's happening in Scottish education at the moment. That was my original intention when setting up the threads.

Thanks Grin
