Scottish Exam Results 2020

Lidlfix · 07/07/2020 15:12

After hearing DD3's deep sigh and worried voice observe "this time in four weeks..." I feel it's acceptable to begin the 2020 thread.

Over the years Scotsnet regulars and visitors have given great support, advice and even (tales of blissfully unaware snoring DC) light hearted relief to each other over the years.

This year has been particularly fearful for us and our DC and I know how much I have appreciated results threads in previous years. As there are plenty of threads with political discussions and chances for posters to express concerns about what politicians/councils/ schools/ teachers are or aren't doing, can I gently ask that we keep this to topic?

I have DD3 waiting on 1 AH and 2 Highers for a conditional offer and DD4 waiting on 5 Highers - results depending she'd like to apply for Law for the end of S6.

A wise move @SockYarn.
Anybody know if schools get the results today? Not that it really matters I am just curious.

Jodri · 31/07/2020 10:07

I don’t know this year. I thought head teachers got results a week before (well that was what our headteacher told dh when he was chair of the parents’ council).

HairyPotter · 31/07/2020 10:12

I’m feeling a bit stressed about Tuesday as well. On paper dd2 should be fine but I can’t help worrying. This is my last ever SQA results days and I am can’t say I’ll miss all this angst Grin

I’m off to book a table for Tuesday 🍷

Furbs · 31/07/2020 10:14

Schools get results today in Edin

Lidlfix · 31/07/2020 10:21

Yes today according to my HY and HT of my DD's school. I feel sick about Tuesday both as a parent and a professional. Been trying to talk through plan Bs with DDs 3 and 4 in such away that they don't feel like the failure option but positive alternatives in a way that doesn't look like I am anticipating failure. If that makes sense?

I usually head up to work to look at my pupils' results after DDs are happily off with friends. I don't know how that will work this year as I don't imagine they will want us all descending on the office or multiple sets of hands on a document. But I do want to know before I go back what SQA did with my estimation.

Table is booked for dinner though and for once it isn't Nando's .

DD2’s plan B is moving 3 hours away. Sad She’s moving out regardless but plan A is 25 mins away.

We don’t talk about plan B Grin

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 31/07/2020 10:35

So glad to find this thread.

Ive got a DD waiting on H results - she's got a conditional for zoology, deferred place as she's only 16, not 17 til Jan.

She's left school - she's very academic but very focussed on her chosen subject, which isn't part of the curriculum. The plan was for her to get her Hs and if there was a grade gap (unlikely at the time) to go to college and re-sit. However, that's all gone to pot. College places are all full and I'm not sure what the options are if she doesn't get the grades. Home schooling, I guess.

She's been doing various zoological projects off her own back all summer, so I'm hoping that uni might take that into account if she's only just short of marks. No idea if that's possible - but, really, she's ideal for the course and I'm hoping they might have an interview system if the exam results are an overall shit-show.

I am having anxiety dreams about the results! Last night's was that she got two triple As, two As and a J. The J was a spiteful mark because she'd been a horrible pupil and the teacher wanted to teach her a lesson. All very vivid at the time.

Fingers crossed for you all, and thanks to the teachers. This is grim for everyone.

Lidlfix · 31/07/2020 10:52

My uni admissions friend has said this year will be different and factors never considered before will come into play. "No detriment" is the HE and FE motto for 2020.

I really want to believe in that as the 2020 cohort must be given a fair chance!

OP posts:
Alittlewornout · 31/07/2020 11:00

Grim is a very good word @vivariumvivariumsvivaria and welcome to the thread. Dd feels very sorry for her teachers and appreciates the horrible position they have been placed. Her take is if she doesn't get the results she expects then that wont be down to anyone except the SQA moderation. She is fairly comfortable with what her teacher estimates are likely to be but then she is the fortunate position to very secure in all 3 AH. For me it's the students who sit on the grade boundary and the difference between a low B and a high C could make for uni places. Here's hoping unis take a missed grade or so and that plan Bs are not required.
On the other hand if plan Bs are needed maybe that will also work out for the best even if it doesn't feel like that immediately. Handhold to you all we will get through this and come out the other side as will our fab DC.

SockYarn · 31/07/2020 11:35

I am getting more stressed about it too. DS has his heart set on a Biomedical Science degree, the entry requirements are AABB at Higher with Biology and Chemistry at B.

His prelims were AAABC - and the C was biology. Never mind said the teacher, that doesn't reflect what we know he's capable of, his homework is good, his project was good, he'll definitely pull it back for the exam as it's an exam technique issue and not a knowledge/understanding issue. And then it all went to pot.

I trust the school and the teachers to do the very best and fairest for all their students. But the SQA... have zero faith in them. I have heard and personally experienced so many fuck ups by them over the years even when exams are running in the usual fashion. I can't believe they have coped perfectly with this scenario, there will be lots of inconstencies, upset students, bemused teachers, angry parents, swamped university admissions people.

Dreading it!

Groovee · 31/07/2020 14:01

Had to book a table for Wednesday as Dd is working on Tuesday. She's just passed her probation and supervision in her lockdown job so hopefully 2 things to celebrate and as we didn't do anything for him leaving school, it's the best we can offer.

WeAllHaveWings · 31/07/2020 14:19

We are planning a Chinese Takeaway for Tuesday night. A local takeaway does ds's favorite food - Grilled and sliced beef in a hot peking sauce.

He hadn't mentioned results day for weeks (waiting for 8 NAT5s so not as critical as H/AH) until he was out with friends for a meal on Wednesday and since then keeps talking about it. General consensus around his friends is either "don't care" or "not bothered", probably a reflection of the lack of control they feel over the process this year.

Can't believe this thread has been running for over 3 weeks, only seems like a couple of days ago it was started!

4 more sleeps!

cocopops · 31/07/2020 14:28

Our school’s management team decided to take the whole of July off(!)
and regroup in August so suspect they won’t be looking at the results today!

I hope they are in bright and breezy on Monday though to gear up with getting any appeals ready for those going to FE and to let us parents know the finer details for the school going back later on next month.

Tensions rising in our household (well, mainly me) in the lead up to Tuesday. I’m just focussing in that espresso martini 🍸

Lidlfix · 31/07/2020 14:50

Coco - gentle reminder re the purpose of this thread with particular reference to it not being the place for discussion on "what politicians/councils/schools/ teachers are or aren't doing". Personally, I genuinely hope that my SLT and the SLT where my DD attends take the time they need as the recoursing and appeals will be exhausting. A day won't have a huge impact. This is an exam results thread and dinner bookings aside we have remained on topic and supportive of everyone including the parents who happen to be teachers or involved in education.

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/07/2020 14:59

Lidl, do you know if it's still the case that although "appeals" are free, do they still require that they can only be made by schools and not by the student/parents? Obviously I don't have any boat in that race but a friend was asking as she thinks that school may prioritise pupils still at school and not those that have now left. Could be completely academic if the required results are given. I'm sure that this wouldn't be the case as, even if they didn't care, it would affect their stats.

I know back in the day, I was working then got a letter from SQA with an increased grade that my teacher had obviously applied for for me. I was only a 5th year when I left though.

cocopops · 31/07/2020 15:06

Lidlfix- I will not stand for more bullying from you on this thread, akin to what I received yesterday. Just because you are a teacher, meows this mean you have the right to control the dialogue.

My post WAS dealing with exams, appeals and dinner on Tuesday. It was directly relevant to comments made about schools receiving results today.

So you know where you can stick your “gentle reminder”.

Lidlfix · 31/07/2020 15:06

Not heard anything to suggest that pupils still at school would be priority, if anything those who have left but perhaps didn't meet conditionals will be . Or those who will be early UCAS deadlines. But that's just the chats I have been involved in.

OP posts:
cocopops · 31/07/2020 15:06

Doesn’t mean- that should read

Lidlfix · 31/07/2020 15:07

Coco I am not engaging start your own thread. Leave us in peace.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 31/07/2020 15:08

Thanks Lidl. I guess everyone just getting a bit jittery - not long now!

cocopops · 31/07/2020 15:08

And if you like @lidlfix, I can reference several other off topic posts on this thread if you neeed evidence. Just because I do not agree with your stance of (not returning) to school, there is no need to attack.

cocopops · 31/07/2020 15:10

Will I hell.I have as much right to be on this thread as you. And I have reported your bullying.

cocopops · 31/07/2020 15:10

That last post was meant for @lidlfix.

Lidlfix · 31/07/2020 15:18

It's not great form to disregard a polite request in the opening post. I was concerned that this would happen when I cautiously started the thread.

You have accused me of bullying and an attack.

Every other poster has expressed gratitude and relief that the thread was started.

You are the minority and I feel sorry for the resentment that you hold as it takes a lot of energy to be so negative.

You won't have the satisfaction of forcing me from a thread I started because until your post every poster has refrained from negative remarks about schools and teachers.

OP posts:
cocopops · 31/07/2020 15:21

Ah- I see. Haven’t I praised the teaching profession or you enough - so so sorry. Thank you from the absolute bottom of my heart.
