Anyone else scared that after doing so well as a country, we'll see an increase of cases in the next few weeks due to being un-able to control the border?

No

FizzFan · 26/06/2020 12:17

A bit wary, but not scared as there’s hee haw we can do about it.

Stabbitha · 26/06/2020 12:37

But Scotland have a population of approx 5million compared to England's 55million.

As an actual percentage it is higher, but only slightly.

Jodri · 26/06/2020 12:52

I agree with Stabbitha and these numbers need to be put context.
I’m not scared anymore, I’m just fed up with this situation and with all the photos of litter on social media it’s not bringing out the best in many people.

catzrulz · 26/06/2020 13:09

Definitely, after seeing the pics of beaches, demonstrations and hearing of parties etc I worry that things will get worse again.
Also as a Scot living in a holiday resort I'm really worried about the inevitable influx of holiday makers to our area.

Tsarboretum · 26/06/2020 15:26

Yes

And even proportionately their numbers are much higher. Our population is 1/11th of theirs, if they had 11x the number of cases they would have 55 new cases, not over 1000!

Stabbitha · 26/06/2020 15:43

What it's the percentage of people tested? How many are Scotland testing compared to England. This can also be relevant.

Stabbitha · 26/06/2020 15:51

The 1,118 figure is the whole of the UK, not just England. 17 is the figure for Scotland.

I was trying to find the testing figures and noticed your numbers were wrong. I checked .gov and worldometers.

Stabbitha · 26/06/2020 16:02

17 may be today's figures, not yesterday's. But that 1,118 it's definitely not just England on its own.

Callisto1 · 26/06/2020 16:04

I worry that in the haste to rescue tourism because furlough is ending and the main season is July and August, we'll get a second peak come September and they'll shut schools again. It's a difficult problem though and I hope we'll get lucky and things don't turn out too badly.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 26/06/2020 16:07

Stabbitha- it doesn’t matter if you want to use the number 5 or the number 17 - in no sense of the entire history of maths have the proportions been “roughly the same”.

goodname · 26/06/2020 17:31

Yes I think it’s worrying but I guess there is nothing they can do to stop it. I can’t see how the percentages work out even nearly the same Stabbitha

Timefor45 · 26/06/2020 18:05

A tiny number of cases. The ‘border’ can’t be (and shouldn’t be) closed, the same way people move between ‘North Yorkshire’ and ‘West Yorkshire’ past a pretty sign, but how they behave once past that border is entirely up to them.

MumofHunter · 26/06/2020 21:54

I can just see places in Scotland becoming crowded with holidaymakers, resulting in hospitals being overrun with Covid cases a la what happened in Weston Super Mare and other places where tourists flocked to.
Agree it having an effect on the opening of schools in Aug is also a worry. Only need to look at NZ to see the importance of having v strict border controls to keep cases down.
TimeFor45 You're comparing a country with a region of another country!

OP posts:
MumofHunter · 26/06/2020 21:56

Callisto I also hope we'll get lucky but as a Highlands dweller, it's just so worrying.

MumofHunter · 26/06/2020 22:05

Also Stabbitha our death rate (per million) was the same as England in March but is now only a third of England's. Surely this speaks for itself (in regards to your testing point).
Either we're somehow much more able to fight off Covid or there's a LOT more Covid in the community down south.

OP, you meant I was comparing a county with a country? Yes, intentionally, as you cross from England to Scotland and vice versa, there’s nothing to stop you as a resident or tourist in the U.K. Same as crossing a county border...
We mustn’t discourage tourism in any way, it’s vital to Scotland’s recovery, we have to trust people to behave according to overall guidance and demonstrate that everyone is welcome.

Callisto1 · 27/06/2020 00:52

Tourism generates 5% of Scottish GDP so hardly a "vital" industry. It's true that people can't and shouldn't be stopped at the border but the reopening of hotels, campsites and self catering accommodation is under local control. Can't see many people turning up if those are shut.
The tricky part I guess is that tourism is more important in the remote areas where population density is low and hospital coverage is patchy. So I guess seeing that these areas will bear most of the risks they should get the biggest say in what happens.

KaronAVyrus · 27/06/2020 07:29

Roughly 200,000 people work in tourism in Scotland and a further 120,000 are indirectly employed. About 12.10% of Scotland’s workforce. I guess mass unemployment isn’t a big deal to some people.

fascinated · 27/06/2020 07:30

Airports will be open soon too. Cases will rise. I don’t know how we can stop it.

midgebabe · 27/06/2020 07:36

Scotland has a significantly lower percentages of new cases per head of population than England

Bedroomdilemma · 27/06/2020 07:41

I feel a bit like this except I’m in Ireland. We have equally low numbers (as does Northern Ireland, thank goodness) and no restrictions in travel with the UK, presumably for political reasons. But your death rate per capita is 5 times ours, the case rate, 10 times and on Mumsnet it seems like the majority don’t care Confused Please don’t come here for tourism this year! (You would struggle to book anywhere anyway, seems to be a lot of pent up internal demand, think we’re going to give it a miss this year, being in the financially affected group).

nextslideplease · 27/06/2020 08:07

If we get air bridges, will people go abroad?

I really want a holiday but I'm also scared to go on one, so not sure yet what I will do.

Bluemoooon · 27/06/2020 08:22

If it's young people who are recovering it's possibly buildiing up immunity.
I think the numbers dying are what counts.

Allnamesaregone · 27/06/2020 08:24

Not worried at all
