So when are we going back to school?

I was under the impression that NS had announced that all schools in Scotland would start back on August 11th. I have had surveys from my local authority asking when we would like the week's holiday in lieu and if we want 1 or 2 in-service days before we start back in August.

Last night a colleague posted a piece showing all the start dates from the different authorities - some were 10th August, !1th, 12th up to the 18th and 19th.

I am totally confused Confused

I personally hate all the couthy crap.

Mascotte · 15/06/2020 20:15

But @ MorrisZapp I love Witness.

AgentCooper · 15/06/2020 20:17

*Chances are we'll have dropped to 1m social distancing by August anyway but they can't mention that ahead of time in case people think ok let's just do it now.

Hold steady*

Thank you @MorrisZapp I needed that Flowers

fascinated · 15/06/2020 20:17

Couthy, yes, that’s the word

And the translatlantic, nasal d at the end of words to mask whether the speaker is pronouncing the t or not

I’ve a strong accent myself but so many on radio / politicians just sound so forced

TeacupDrama · 15/06/2020 20:18

I don't get the friday off for cleaning; Cleaning is not done by teachers nor is it supervised by teachers; it is done by cleaners after school finshes why not just pay cleaners to do an extra hour each day so it is cleaned better and for a deep clean Saturday rather than Friday night
I think thew Dutch idea of 1metres between kids all forward facing and front row 2 metres from teacher,
when someone coughs it doesn't spread in a uniform 2 metre circle most goes directly forward so someone facing you a metre away will get about 5 times more than someone sideways to you and someone a metre away but with back to you will get almost zero
50% is an absolute minimum, most schools have a bit extra space an large hall (PE in the playground or on days not in school) lunches are at desks and free school meals will still be packed lunches so hall not needed for PE assemblies or lunches
they need some creative thinking instead of just that won't work my union says no
no one should be working extra hours
if you teach half class 2 days surely you are just teaching the same thing againfor next 2 days to other half of the class at least in primary
I think Primary won't work with 5 days school and 5 days homework but 3 days school and 2 home then 2 school 3 home next week might
but I think the aim should be 100% in from August

fascinated · 15/06/2020 20:18

Anyway, I digress.

Sorry!

Mascotte · 15/06/2020 20:18

Yes, @fascinated, it's not an accent thing, it's hard to explain but very irritating. No one speaks like that irl

mondaywine · 15/06/2020 21:12

@yogafailure absolutely feel your pain. My DD should get two days (not confirmed but we are in the same authority so this is a pretty good guess based on what will happen at my school). So how am I to work full time? What will my DD do? She’s not old enough to be home alone. I cannot maintain the level of online work I am doing just now when I am teaching too. It is just now going to be possible. I can’t be in two places at the same time.

mondaywine · 15/06/2020 21:13

And I also can’t type

*Its just not going to be possible.

BananaTreeBirdie · 15/06/2020 21:17

No, definitely not. We will be having academic groups and if it goes ahead, it will be a great chance to work quite intensively with each group at their own level. I should have a full P5 class with at least four working groups and two individuals. You can do things with 11 that are flat out impossible with 33...

What was that all about?

StoorieHoose · 15/06/2020 22:19

It was a transcript from NS briefing today I think

nextslideplease · 15/06/2020 22:19

political post from a cyber nat I reckon

Tomorrowisanewday · 15/06/2020 22:27

Transcript of nicola sturgeon's statement at today's briefing.

Just to make sure people realise JS was wrong yesterday, when he went on national tv and said this proposal could go into 2021. And that year's exams could be cancelled

Mascotte · 15/06/2020 22:40

Ah... the cult

Mascotte · 15/06/2020 22:42

I've searched some posts and it seems that's right. Dear god, what's the world coming to!

MumofHunter · 15/06/2020 23:16

Yes - I posted the transcript from NS's up- date today because I thought it might alleviate some people's worry and hopefully make them feel slighly less anxious about their child's / children's education come August.
I deleted it because I just knew what would follow it and you've proved me right.

Mascotte · 15/06/2020 23:33

Weird all round here today.

KaronAVyrus · 15/06/2020 23:36

Odd

PrincessForADay · 16/06/2020 00:02

To the teachers on this thread I applaud you. It's a challenging enough job normally. I understand NS & the government's fear. But they need to understand families cannot go on line this. Many of us do not have the ability to work from home & even those that do cannot juggle a job & being an educator indefinitely.

I've heard the Wednesday closed in Glasgow with cleaning given as a reason but in Edinburgh the Friday half day has been taken for teachers to support home learning. Cleaning might be secondary but I don't remember reading that part

Lidlfix · 16/06/2020 08:14

The cleaners had an unworkable remit before COVID 19. School cleaning is all private contracts where I am. One cleaner had three faculties and all the associated stairwells and corridors. They have a rolling program of tasks - one night floors, the next desks and then window sills, skirting boards and surfaces. The cleaners are in working the moment the pupils leave and work until 10. We are not having a closed for cleaning day so I have no desire idea how deep cleaning will be possible Confused

SockYarn · 16/06/2020 08:51

It's almost as if they don't know what each other is doing! She backpedalled quickly yesterday after she spotted that people were furious about her part-time proposals.

nextslideplease · 16/06/2020 09:00

BBC News are reporting less job vacancies, higher unemployment

well...duh

And it will get worse over the summer with no childcare, and in the autumn with blended learning

Working mothers are the ones who will suffer.

Less jobs advertised and more fixed term contracts because organisations no longer know what their income will be. So less job security going forward.
