What's the best public transport? A website I looked at seems to say bus routes fall short, does the Clockwork Orange go anywhere near? Any idea how much a taxi might be? (St Andrews Building)

I'm actually a (very) mature access student, but feel more helpless than teenage me. Blush

Kelvinbridge subway station is about 5 minutes walk from St Andrews building according to the university website. I love the Clockwork Orange. Smile

BuffyChiro · 18/09/2019 23:48

Ex Glasgow uni student here - St Enoch subway station is very close to Glasgow Central - jump on the subway there and get off at Hillhead - about an 8 minute journey. If your train also goes through Glasgow Queen Street you might even find it easier to get off there instead as that train station is connected to Buchanan Street subway station.

BuffyChiro · 18/09/2019 23:55

Sorry - as Friendofsadgirl said, for St. Andrews building get off at Kelvinbridge instead, rather than Hillhead.

HirplesWithHaggis · 19/09/2019 00:04

Many thanks. I know there's a bus from Central to Queens Street Station, might be an idea to take that and then the subway to Kelvinbridge?

(I really appreciate your answers. Flowers )

Short walk under 5 mins from Kelvinbridge to the St Andrews building. Go early great area lots of lovely cafes.

57Varieties · 19/09/2019 00:13

By the time you faffed around with a bus you’d have walked to St Enoch. Walk to St Enoch then clockwork orange to Kelvinbridge/Hillhead

HirplesWithHaggis · 19/09/2019 00:20

Lol, thank you 57varieties, Shanks' pony it is! Grin

Yes definitely walk to either St Enoch or Buchanan St stations then clockwork orange to Kelvinbridge. It’s only a ( minute walk to either station.

HirplesWithHaggis · 19/09/2019 02:28

Thank you all again, I really do appreciate your responses.

Um, I've never actually used the Clockwork Orange, how does it work? I mean, paying for it, when I was in London a few years ago I paid stupid rates on the Underground because it wasn't worth getting an Oystercard for the short time I was there. I'll be at Uni 2 days a week minimum, wouldn't be using the card otherwise (assuming there is some sort of card...)

I'm not fit to be let loose, am I? Blush

You can buy a smart card that you top us on a pay ad you go basis. Link to get one is here www.spt.co.uk/travelcards/subway-smartcard/

Just putting it out there because it's what I did as a student - but I am probably too unfit right now.

It is just over a 30 minute walk from the station to the Uni. Uphill all the way there but downhill on the way home.

(When I lived in London I took the tube everywhere until I eventually worked out that lots of the time it was actually quicker to walk and much less stair / escalator negotiating)

OllyBJolly · 19/09/2019 11:43

If you're coming on the Hamilton Circle line it would be easier to get off at Argyle St and walk to St Enoch's to pick up the clockwork orange.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/09/2019 11:49

Walk, lazy bugger! Are you a student there - I’m jealous?!

But here’s a tip - never ever ever agree to do a sub crawl. It’s a Very Bad Idea.

user1487194234 · 19/09/2019 12:08

And never call it the clockwork orange !No true Glaswegian does.

CassianAndor · 19/09/2019 12:10

And never call it the clockwork orange !No true Glaswegian does.

my mum always did!

I love it, it's so dinky.

HirplesWithHaggis · 19/09/2019 12:26

Thanks again. :) I'm definitely not fit enough yet to walk the whole way (I've been unwell for a few years and pretty much housebound, so muscles have atrophied) but hope to build myself up a bit and maybe manage a stroll downhill by spring. Definitely won't be doing a sub crawl! Grin

I'm ridiculously nervous about this, your help is appreciated.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/09/2019 12:41

Well I call it the clockwork orange - so did my dad (Glasgow born and bred, and GU alumni). Maybe they don’t call it that these days?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/09/2019 12:42

You are going to have a bloody brilliant time! My MIL adores the botanical gardens and tells everyone how brilliant Glasgow is (and how lovely the people are).

57Varieties · 19/09/2019 12:49

And never call it the clockwork orange !No true Glaswegian does.

Well I do. Not sure what qualifies me to be a “true Glaswegian” in your book, but I kind of assumed being born and bred here and lived here all my almost 50 years would do it!

HirplesWithHaggis · 19/09/2019 12:55

I'm not, and never will be, a "true Glaswegian", I'm a teuchter currently displaced to Ayrshire. Grin

OP posts:
0lga · 19/09/2019 13:59

You don’t need to get a bus from Queen St to Central, it’s a 5 minute walk. Seriously Hmm.

As everyone says, the subway is faster and more reliable than the bus.

You can buy a ticket at the subway station with cash but there will be queues at rush hour, so allow time.

Good luck with your course and your health.

prettybird · 19/09/2019 14:12

My dh is a true Glaswegian, born and bred, and calls it the Clockwork Orange. Confused

He says I'm not a true Glasgwegian, not so much because I wasn't born here but because I was brought up in Bearsden/Milngavie, so outside the city boundary Shock not my fault that they want the benefits of the city without paying for them Hmm

But I've now lived in Glasgow ( South Shock side) for over 25 years Grin (with aforesaid true Glaswegian Wink)

readsalotgirl63 · 19/09/2019 19:24

I was born and grew up in Glasgow and went to Galsgow Uni and I called it the clockwork orange !

MsPavlichenko · 19/09/2019 19:31

Is the subway. Can remember when it was red. I know no one who calls it that other than commentators/ folk attempting the patter as in Chewing the Fat.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/09/2019 20:40

You are obviously mixing with the Wrong Type of Glaswegians...
