Do you really save money by flying from down south?

Been looking at few holidays and I've heard about people saving thousands by going to Liverpool or Manchester. There doesn't seem to be that much of a saving though Hmm especially factoring in getting the train down etc.

Am I too late for this year? Or is it only if your drive you save?

yes you save.. one year we saved money even though we flew from Inverness to Gatwick first in order to fly from Gatwick. Our flight from Gatwick was only half full so we had a row of seats each!

Yes! I always book with Jet2 & their app shows you the price differences from various airports.

I usually go from Leeds, Manchester or preferably Newcastle.

And you avoid the chaos of the Scottish airports at peak holiday times.

Costacoffeeplease · 29/06/2019 12:03

If you fly from an English airport before their schools break up, yes, you should save money. Whether it’s worth it after the cost of getting there is going to depend on how you do it

Rankellior · 29/06/2019 12:06

Yes. It’s often about 1/3rd of the price compared to Edinburgh so have flown from Liverpool and Newcastle. It’s a pain when you land and know you’ve a 4 hour journey home vs 45 mins but it’s too big a saving to ignore.

Mayday19 · 29/06/2019 12:11

I have booked recently and the difference for us would be hundreds not thousands - maybe £300? I then factor in the drive, the petrol, the airport parking, possibly a night in a hotel, and the trauma of driving back again at the end - it is not for me. Funnily though we like driving holidays and will happily drive from Scotland to France - but we make that part of the holiday in a way I can’t imagine doing just to get to an airport.

WouldLikeSomeSunshine · 29/06/2019 12:12

I wonder if I'm too late. I'm on Jet2 and the same holidays are £429 from Manchester and Liverpool but £489 from Glasgow. Obviously still a saving but not that much.

Trauma sounds like the right word tbh Grin

I’m just too old for it now! Grin

If it's going before the English schools break up mid-July, it's definitely better.

Keep comparing OP; I got a good deal leaving from Leeds Bradford earlier this week & managed to get a free child place.

Family of 6 so flights make up a huge part of the holiday cost and with me being a teacher no chance of going early. We have flown from Manchester, Liverpool, Gatwick in the past to make our holidays affordable. Secure car parking we'd have needed regardless. Yes some fuel and even a Airport Premier Inn if flight touched down in the middle of the night and we were still much less than flights from Scotland.

Have to say though we flew from Glasgow to Milan last year and it was lovely to be home in half an hour.

Superjaggy · 29/06/2019 17:11

I'm near Inverness and if we book well in advance then it's usually cheaper to fly to London and onwards from there (this goes for flights to Europe and the US). By this time of year though there are very few seats left on flights to London and they're extortionate.

cdtaylornats · 29/06/2019 17:12

If you are going to the US you should consider going from Shannon. USA has a customs and immigration area in Shannon, so you avoid all that on the far side.

LouLouLoupee · 29/06/2019 17:17

I saved a little over £1000 flying from Manchester instead of Glasgow for a package holiday to Cyprus. So even with the hotel stay and diesel it’s worthwhile. I wouldn’t bother with the hassle if it’s less than a few hundred quid though

LouLouLoupee · 29/06/2019 17:18

Oh and I booked it last year to leave next week

FlippingBottleFlippers · 30/06/2019 08:09

If you are going mid August, Scotland can be cheaper, we got a really reasonable holiday last year for 5 of us flying from Glasgow.

Doormat247 · 30/06/2019 08:29

My nearest airports are Leeds Bradford and Manchester. Both tend to be far more expensive than the southern airports so our last few flights have been from Gatwick. Sometimes it's worth it and sometimes not - factor in the time costs (5hrs driving after a 12hr flight almost killed us as no sleep on the plane and a 7hr time difference too Confused).

I've had an amazing deal to Mexico from Birmingham but it's the worst airport I've ever flown from and cost £200 in a taxi so only worth doing if you can still save plenty of money against your nearer airport.

Lately I've seen cheaper deals from Scotland but never pursuance my bf to drive up there. Liverpool is a good choice though apparently.

FFSeverynameisused · 30/06/2019 09:05

It always appears to be around £200 of a difference, which if you factor in travel down to Manchester and likely having to book a travel inn before and after, isn't actually a saving.

Don't understand how people are getting higher savings though?

Jbck · 30/06/2019 09:30

Depends when you book too, saving in February for travelling soon will be much less than saving booking now for next week.

Edi to Nice family of 4 flights only vs same from Newcastle saved 350, same journey now difference is about 700. Flight times and even factoring in what time travel to airport were the additional benefits.

Plus DH does the driving anyway 😃

Darkbendis · 03/07/2019 10:22

We saved a bit over £200/person last year by flying from London. So at least £800 since we are a family of 4. We have family in London though, so we didn't have to pay for accommodation overnight, we could leave our car at our relatives' house for free and we got dropped at the airport, so the only expense we had was the cost of diesel. I think it would have been worth it even factoring hotel and airport parking costs.

user1487194234 · 03/07/2019 15:12

We have looked at it from time to time
In the end the savings have not felt worth it for the hassle
But if we were on a tight budget it would be different

Hoppinggreen · 03/07/2019 15:15

I know someone who does it the other way around.
Even factoring a hotel at the airport (with parking included) and a 3 hour journey they saved loads by flying from Glasgow apparently

Mmmmdanone · 03/07/2019 15:33

A couple of years ago I was on holiday with our family of 4 and met a family of 4 from Birmingham who had got 2 weeks (we were there for 1) in the same place for £400 less than we had paid. So yes, think big savings are possible!

Groovee · 03/07/2019 21:33

We booked a year in advance and saved £1000 going from Manchester. The petrol was about £50, Hotel was £45 and parking £50. So still a big saving.

DonkeyHohtay · 06/07/2019 12:35

Depends. We are away at the moment flyer by from Glasgow because I was super organised and booked easy jet flights last September the day they were released.

We've flown from Liverpool diring the October week and it's saved us £200 per person. We also did our first Florida holiday at the beginning of July one year connecting through Gatwick to save money. More flight choice too.

You also have to factor in the cost of getting there in fuel and possibly an overnight stay. Plus the hassle.

Personally, unless we're saving at least £80 a head for a family of 5, it's not with it.

Shenanagins · 08/07/2019 21:21

We save over £600 by flying to and out of Heathrow/Gatwick so always worth looking into.
