Okay so I no longer like the company I work for and I am actively looking for other jobs.

Unfortunately all the other jobs that are coming up are in Edinburgh and I'm outside Glasgow.

There's a great job currently advertised that I could do with my eyes shut but:

a, it's £33,000 when I'm on £35,000 which wouldn't normally concern me except
b, it would be 1.5 hours to drive and nearly 2 hours on the train - so costing money to travel
c, it would mean leaving home at 7am which means either DD getting herself to and from school (she;s 11) or asking my mother to come up earlier (which I doubt she'll be happy about)

Relocation is not an option due to DH's work and DD being happy and settled with friends here.

Am I being daft to consider applying anyway? Is there an easier way of managing this?

The job is in one of the universities.

I think it would be really tough. My commute is less than that (1 hour 15 minutes usually) and I find it makes for a long day. And that's without juggling childcare (although I'm pregnant at the moment so I'll need to figure that out eventually).

Does the uni offer any flexible working? Working from home 1-2 days a week makes it bearable for me - although I do feel a bit disconnected and out of the loop when I'm not in the office so even that isn't ideal.

Butterflyone1 · 28/06/2019 15:18

Although it's advertised at that salary, I always think there's some flexibility for the right applicant. I'd apply for it and just see what happens. They might able to offer you more to even cover travel expenses.

strangerthongs · 28/06/2019 15:43

They do offer flexible working but I'm not sure whether to ask about that in an interview or wait until a job offer?

Which uni it is would make a big difference - if on the west side near the bypass going to be quicker than if city centre

PCohle · 28/06/2019 15:59

I think that's a shit commute, especially in Scotland rather than eg the South East where most people just don't have a commute of that distance. It effectively massively increases your working day (for less money) and reduces your flexibility - no nipping out to a school event for a couple of hours.

strangerthongs · 28/06/2019 16:01

It is the OU

ImperfectTents · 28/06/2019 16:16

It would be an utter misery in the winter and would cost a fortune

strangerthongs · 28/06/2019 16:35

:(

all the f*cking jobs are in Edinburgh. Why aren't there any in Glasgow :( :( :(

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/06/2019 16:37

Traffic could make that commute a nightmare, ditto trains.

chemenger · 28/06/2019 16:41

Is it in the Drumseugh Gardens office? If so where are you planning to park?

strangerthongs · 28/06/2019 16:46

might need to get the train but could still be murder with regards to seat space and means a 12 hour day.

I feel so depressed right now. I really need another job but nothing is coming up within an easy commute

If you have to drive on the Edinburgh City Bypass factor in even more time because it is an absolute shit show at rush hour Sad

TitianaTitsling · 28/06/2019 16:54

It'd be a fortune on the train too- driving l had to travel from North Ayrshire to Edinburgh for work for once a month journey there took anything 2-3 hrs, back hit all sorts of traffic and it was took up to 4 if traffic/accident/roadworks.

TitianaTitsling · 28/06/2019 16:56

must absolutely! Lost the will at some points!

ImperfectTents · 28/06/2019 17:00

When I was looking this time last year all the jobs in my industry were in Glasgow. Hold tight something will come up

AgentProvocateur · 28/06/2019 17:04

I’ve done that commute a few stations in before, and it’s brutal in terms of not getting a seat at Edinburgh, cancelled trains etc etc. And the drive is worse. Unless you live in Glasgow city centre and your office is at Haymarket or Waverley, I’d say don’t do it.

strangerthongs · 28/06/2019 17:05

an annual train season ticket is just over £5000

fuck sake!

I guess that makes my decision for me then.

bloody hell

I drive from south Edinburgh to Braehead twice a week. Takes an hour and a half in rush hour traffic. I really couldn’t face it every day. Think you might need to hold out for a bit longer!

Invisimamma · 28/06/2019 17:10

I commute 30 minutes into Edinburgh by train and that's about my limit tbh. I never get a seat in the morning.

Are you sure the commute would actually take 90minutes? I would be about 45mins into city centre at the weekend/daytime but peak time I would be more like 90mintues, sometimes more if there's been an incident, the bypass route can be a nightmare!

I have a colleague who commutes Cumbernauld to Edinburgh, that's about as far out as I think is reasonable, and even that isn't easy!!

strangerthongs · 28/06/2019 17:23

10 mins drive to nearest station, 1 hr 25 mins on the train, 10 min walk from haymarket

1 hr 30 mins to 2 hrs by car.

and I can't get past how much the season ticket would cost!

just seen a job in Glasgow this time.

£10,000 less than I'm currently earning.

Could greet.

TitianaTitsling · 28/06/2019 18:46

And sadly thongs it's oft been replacement bus on that route for me!

BeckyWithTheSplitEnds · 30/06/2019 08:18

I really wouldn't. If I were young and single, 2 hours on the train each way might not be so bad - I could use the time to read or study. Older and with a million responsibilities at home I wouldn't go near it.

4 hours a day on an unnecessary and unenjoyable activity? Not a hope in hell!

I did come across a young man commuting from Aberdeen to Perth daily - but that was for a very specific reason and the timestamp was 9 months - oh and he didn't have kids.

I also know someone going daily from Dunning Glen to Glasgow Uni and someone from Partick to Stirling. BOTH have no kids...

There must be jobs at the uni(s) in Glasgow - between Glasgow itself, Strathclyde, Caledonian, School of Art plus all the other colleges - there has to be something there which ticks boxes.

Also, wouldn't that train be horrendously busy and you may well end up standing a large portion of the time? Although that might be for the best as I have it on good authority that train routinely stinks of pish so I'm not sure you'd want to sit down anyway. Wink

BeckyWithTheSplitEnds · 30/06/2019 08:22

ETA: I'm in Crieff and an incredible opportunity came up for me at Strathclyde uni - but it was a no from me. I'm old enough now to say "fuck no, not for me" when something doesn't serve me well.

I'm not leaving this area which I think is wonderful - and I'm certainly not spending 3-4 hours a day on public transport or sitting in my car crying between the Doune roundabout and EverywhereElse on a daily basis.

Verily1 · 30/06/2019 08:26

Lots of people do the G-E train it’s so busy! But it’s hell!

I’d only recommend for a temp post/ no kids.

What about Stirling uni? UWS?

The colleges in towns around Glasgow?
