Okay so I no longer like the company I work for and I am actively looking for other jobs.

Unfortunately all the other jobs that are coming up are in Edinburgh and I'm outside Glasgow.

There's a great job currently advertised that I could do with my eyes shut but:

a, it's £33,000 when I'm on £35,000 which wouldn't normally concern me except
b, it would be 1.5 hours to drive and nearly 2 hours on the train - so costing money to travel
c, it would mean leaving home at 7am which means either DD getting herself to and from school (she;s 11) or asking my mother to come up earlier (which I doubt she'll be happy about)

Relocation is not an option due to DH's work and DD being happy and settled with friends here.

Am I being daft to consider applying anyway? Is there an easier way of managing this?

The job is in one of the universities.

I wouldn't commit to any job that involves relying on scotrail. They are horrendous for delays and cancellations.

Unfortunately that type of job is not available in the West region (yet) but there are loads advertised in Edinburgh based universities and in England. It's bloody annoying.

I look every day and not just at universities either although universities are more likely to have good pay, benefits and permanent positions.

What about going by bus? Megabus and city link are options. How far do you live from Buchanan Street?

strangerthongs · 30/06/2019 10:05

about 45 mins from buchanan street.

I can get a direct train from where I live, or change at Q street, either option takes about an hour and a half, not including time it takes to get to and from each train station.

I don't think I will apply which sucks because I could honestly do it with my eyes shut.

But it's already £2000 less pa than I'm currently on, and the travel costs would take another £4-5000 off my salary.

So it just doesn't seem like it will work out.

I really need another job though for multiple reasons.

I did it for two years, driving. The sun is in your eyes both ways! Coming into Glasgow over the Kingston Bridge, I had to make sure I was crossing by around 7.15am, otherwise the build up of traffic is too unpredictable. Even then, accidents were a regular occurrence and a fixed 9.00am start would have meant I was late regularly. Coming back, again, traffic is challenging especially if driving in rush hour. Ice in winter added to the mix. In saying that, if these jobs may become available in the west universities in the next year, might be worth doing for the experience?

OP, I think you're right. It would be very difficult. Although it could be worth applying and then asking about flexible working. You can always turn it down if they couldn't accommodate you. You might be able tondo condensed hours, or 2 days from home for example. I commute to Edinburgh twice a week for an 8am start. Outside of rush hour it's a 35 min commute by car from where I live. But I leave by 6.50 am (and arrive 7.30am) otherwise it becomes an hour commute which I'm not prepared to do. Not sure how I'd cope if it was every day!

I drive three hours a day and the cost of maintaining the car and buying petrol and a rail ticket really isn't feasible on the lower salary.
Mind you you have two salaries so it might be ok. I don't mind the drive any more but winter in Scotland could be a problem.

I stopped doing that commute 5 years ago after 10 years and it’s bliss. Trains were crowded with the service getting worse despite spiralling fairs.

It would take an awful lot to even tempt me to ever consider it.
