What does this mean?

If someone said "she's a belter" in Scotland what does that mean? Internet is divided between it meaning something good, and something bad (for context, I am guessing that it's bad). Ta for your help.

It's interchangeable depending on context

BuffyFlanket · 28/01/2019 17:35

Definitely either or!

TheQueef · 28/01/2019 17:37

I'd use that as a compliment. Like he's a cracker or knock out. NE

RectangularPinkPiggy · 28/01/2019 17:40

Gosh, no way of knowing for sure then. I do think it was an insult though, sadly. I guess there aren't many worse things you can be than a "belter"?

Def a compliment here. I’ve never heard it as an insult. ‘She’s a right belter’ - she’s stunning. ‘That was a belter o a hit!’ - he knocked it out the park.

RectangularPinkPiggy · 28/01/2019 17:42

Apparently (according to Google) it's an insult in Dundee. No idea where the person who said it originates from.

Not a phrase I’ve ever used so I’ve got no idea really but I’ve only ever heard it used as a compliment. What context was it said in?

HirplesWithHaggis · 28/01/2019 17:42

I've never heard/seen "belter" as a negative, can someone give some context? (Maybe it's different in different parts of the country?)

Windyone · 28/01/2019 17:44

I’m Scottish and as far as I’m concerned it’s a positive

WeeDoughball · 28/01/2019 17:44

Can't imagine it bring anything other than a compliment, along the lines of the Gerry Cinnamon song 'Belter'

AgentProvocateur · 28/01/2019 17:45

I’ve only heard it used as a compliment. “she’s a right wee belter!”

RectangularPinkPiggy · 28/01/2019 17:48

Um, it was a night out, and after a brief conversation with someone (male, who I may have unintentionally - and genuinely unintentionally - annoyed) they sat at a table behind me and said "she's a belter, she's a belter, she's a belter" in a sing song voice, very loudly.. I am scottish myself, but it's not a word used where I come from, so I don't understand the meaning, though I am guessing it was an insult, sadly.

HirplesWithHaggis · 28/01/2019 17:50

Sounds like he was a wanker.

Dontstepinthecowpat · 28/01/2019 17:52

He sounds like an asshole. My dad would use it if talking about a car he really liked but I wouldn’t give that fanny another thought

3out · 28/01/2019 17:53

In that context it sounds like sarcasm. I’ve never encountered the word in a negative use, but anyone can use a word which is normally a compliment and use it sarcastically. He sounds like a thoroughly lovely man, I bet the ladies are just queuing up.

RectangularPinkPiggy · 28/01/2019 17:53

I think he would say the same about me Hirples, sadly.

OP posts:
RectangularPinkPiggy · 28/01/2019 17:54

Thanks girls, I was sure it was bad.

OP posts:
3out · 28/01/2019 18:03

Yeah, he really doesn’t sound like anyone whose opinion matters, at all. What an idiot.

FannyFifer · 28/01/2019 18:03

Getting called a belter is not a good thing, kind of like getting called an idiot.. (Fifer who works in Dundee)

RectangularPinkPiggy · 28/01/2019 18:12

Thanks FannyFifer. Well, that's me then..a belter.

Chickenwing · 28/01/2019 18:13

They were singing belter by Gerry cinnamon. It's a great song and it was meant as a compliment

Whisky2014 · 28/01/2019 18:15

Id say she would be good fun or a good laugh.
I'm north east scotland

Surfingtheweb · 28/01/2019 18:17

It's a compliment, maybe he likes fiery women so your confrontation spurred him on to thinking your even more of a belter than just your looks Wink

Lidlfix · 28/01/2019 18:21

It is a great song and a compliment in Central Scotland. There is a poster on Scotsnet who has Shesabelter as her username and I always break into song Grin

prettybird · 28/01/2019 22:21

I've only ever seen/heard it used as a compliment. But like AgentProvocateur , I'm a West Coaster.
