Currently in the Midlands but wanting to move North. Children all grown up and independent so schools not an issue (one DD lives in Scotland). We love the beauty of the West coast, but not the rain, so probably somewhere on the Eastern half of the country would suit us best. Sunny is more important than warm if that makes sense. We'd like to be able to reach a village easily, great views, lovely countryside and to be not too far from a town with good facilities and plenty going on. All ideas very gratefully received!

Broughty Ferry is lovely, though you may want to be more rural? You don't mention budget or the rough size of property you are looking for?

I know you say you can be anywhere, but have you considered if grandchildren come along that you may feel differently. Where is Scotland is your DD?

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/01/2019 12:22

Borders maybe? Somewhere like innerleithen or maybe East Lothian out Haddington way? Remember the further north you go the longer the winter nights are but you do get the benefit of endless summer nights.

One of the East Neuk villages - near enough to St Andrews and Dundee if you want a town/city.

Riotingbananas · 11/01/2019 13:40

Thanks everyone. Children are all scattered around the UK and no grandchildren on the horizon, so that's not too much of a decision maker for us at present. We'd like a bit of character, and budget is up to about £350k. Size isn't too important, at least 2 bedrooms, preferably 3.

One really important thing I completely forgot to mention - we really don't want to be anywhere full of tourists, we're trying to escape that!

Will look at the places suggested, thank you. We've visited the East Neuk and liked it, but just wondering about the tourism? We have wondered about the borders and also much further north eg Inverness. We'd like to be somewhere where you can open the curtains and the view makes your heart sing.

Depends what you like in a view I suppose :) (thinks about Faulty Towers)

I get that feeling from all sorts of views including cityscapes. Ideal retiral destination for me is equally confused. Part of me would love a flat in the middle of edinburgh (need a lottery win though) or even in one of the villages in Edinburgh. Then I think i'd like to be by the sea, then I also like the mountains/rolling countryside or even where I am now (Stirlingshire). I would also love to park myself in the Lake District in easy reach of a Booths supermarket.... I guess that is out due to the tourists though?

All the locations we've suggested and you've mentioned have a very different feel to them so you probably need to devote a week or two to travelling about and seeing what takes your fancy.

This ticks all boxes except the tourist one as you are quite close to loch ness so i imagine it gets quite busy.

Riotingbananas · 11/01/2019 15:35

Oh god. I like all of them! We are going on a trip to take a look at places from the borders up, so having ideas on where we might start are so useful. Thank you.

If you have DC all over the country I would be looking at transport links especially if you are downsizing to the extent that you wouldn't be able to accommodate visitors with a plus 1 or more comfortably. Also can be difficult to find hotels / B&Bs in non touristy more rural areas.

Cheeseart · 11/01/2019 20:04

I live north of Inverness, the views out my window are absolutely stunning, but if your after more sunny days, I'd recommend more towards the borders, especially in winter the dark and wetness of it all can be a bit depressing the further north you go!

tothesea · 11/01/2019 20:31

This is a lot of house for the money and Ceres is a lovely wee village www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-67230254.html

tothesea · 11/01/2019 20:36

I so want to move to the countryside and live somewhere called Lilliesleaf!! www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-67431367.html

Riotingbananas · 11/01/2019 22:54

Thanks again all. Interesting about the wetness North of Inverness, I'd assumed it was dry. We've had a lot of bereavements in the last couple of years which has been truly awful. It means that we no longer have ties anywhere and we've been able to buy a place overseas, which I suppose is a comfort but we feel as if we are drifting at the moment (we sold our own house to care for a terminally ill parent).

I would recommend Lilliesleaf! Spent a few weeks there recently. It’s a lovely community with great countryside and a fantastic pub , in fact two great pubs and a lovely cafe. Not far from Melrose and Selkirk. Really liked it.

SpanielPlusToddler · 11/01/2019 23:10

Moray would tick a lot of your boxes dry, sunny, amazing beaches, easy access to mountains, lots of lovely towns and villages, you’d get a lot of property for your money. I’ll attempt to link a video...

Stroller15 · 11/01/2019 23:18

I was in Lilliesleaf just a week ago! Absolutely lovely!

SpanielPlusToddler · 11/01/2019 23:20

... sorry I can’t find the video I was thinking of! Also lots of distilleries, golf, fishing, surfing, snow sports. Beautiful, good transport links, shops and cultural stuff in easy reach in Aberdeen and Inverness. I absolutely love it, can you tell?!!

I know you said not the west but Dumfries and Galloway does have milder weather than further north. It’s lovely around the solway coast area and gets a bit forgotten about .

2018SoFarSoGreat · 11/01/2019 23:24

I second Broughty Ferry. That's where I'd be buying if I end up back in Scotland. Perfect spot.

Sorry for your losses. Flowers

tothesea · 12/01/2019 00:21

So sorry for your losses Riotingbananas. I hope you find somewhere you love Flowers

TheEndofIt · 12/01/2019 08:02

I'd go for the area around North Berwick in East Lothian - great climate, lovely villages, good transport links to Edinburgh & gown south.

Riotingbananas · 12/01/2019 13:43

We're going to look at all the suggested areas, thank you again. We've lost 3 parents in a very short time so it's been a bit tough. Moving to somewhere thats good for the soul will be wonderful and will bring some much needed joy Smile

I was coming on here to suggest North Berwick or East Lothian as well. House prices can be high though.
