Short term flat rental Glasgow West End ( for hospital visiting)

JessieMcJessie · 13/04/2018 00:33

My brother had a serious accident last week and is in ICU at the Queen Elizabeth. He is now more stable and my SIL has had to leave the family room in the hospital. Her own home is an hour’s drive away and she isn’t happy to go back there, plus I need somewhere to stay when visiting from London. She’d like to rent a flat and knows the West End. Brother is going to be in hospital for several months as he has multiple spinal fractures and head injury.
Does anyone know anybody with a flat to rent for 3 months or so? There isn’t a lot online and air b n b has nothing available for that long. Only needs to be 1 bed and we could pay rent in full upfront.

Does it have to be the West End there are a couple of nice modern flats to rent in Renfrew just near Braehead. Lovely and handy for the QEUH & probably better value than the West End

JessieMcJessie · 13/04/2018 00:57

Hi, thanks for replying. Not necessarily but she told me that she’d be happier in the W End as she used to live there and would be quite quick through the Clyde tunnel. The whole situation is so horrendous we’re clutching at anything to keep a grip on sanity.

Where are you seeing the Renfrew flats advertised?

I can't do clicky links bit there's a lovely one on Rightmove for £550 pm. It's cordon rd, Ferry Village in Renfrew

Redglitter · 13/04/2018 01:31

The advantage of that is she'd be able to get a bus along to the hospital if she wanted to avoid the problem parking. And it's lovely and handy for Braehead for her shopping or eating out if she doesn't want to cook

JessieMcJessie · 13/04/2018 06:31

Thanks both. We can start talking to agents but I have a feeling that unless a place is advertised as a short let no landlord is going to be interested in anything less than 6 months. I have a rental flat in London myself and I wouldn’t do it as new agency fees every time it’s advertised.

Why not try for a room in a flat share? They might be more flexible as the short term would take it up until students might be looking for starting in august?

The CityLets website appears to have a few. Renfrew might be a good shout too as it's just a straight road all the way to the hospital. I really don't think a flat share is a good idea in this situation as that comes with its own stresses and strains of living with strangers - is that really what you want when you have other things to worry about?

Hope your brother's on the mend soon.

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/04/2018 07:57

This one looks good. Nice double room, renting with one other woman. Listed yesterday and minimum rental one month. And says in West end. I don't know Glasgow well though so just going by the description.

Hi. Thanks WaxOn. SIL really needs a quiet place on her own/with family and can’t face having to interact with strangers as my brother is stable but still critical and in able to speak so she’s only just holding it together while in the hospital.

I’ll look at CityLets, thanks Fleur.

Try Gumtree, I’ve got flats to rent through there and also advertised.

There’s a newsagents on Byres Rd next to Peckhams that has lots of ads on the window - she could look there and also put up a wanted ad.

FleurDelacoeur · 13/04/2018 08:18

There are also several companies doing serviced apartments for the corporate market - not cheap, but takes away the need for things like doing laundry and cleaning. Many are very central though, and parking might be an issue.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 13/04/2018 08:27

Sorry to read this. The neurosurgery unit and spinal unit at the queen Elizabeth are fantastic, he’ll be receiving the best care possible.
The law surrounding property rentals in Scotland have just changed. A 6 month short assured tenancy is no longer available, I think it’s now just mutually an 84 day notice period but I could be wrong. This could be helpful for her. The rental market moves quickly around Glasgow so hopefully she’ll get something.

caoraich · 13/04/2018 08:40

Not sure of your budget but you could try west end apartments www.westendflatsglasgow.co.uk
They're serviced appts and so no need to worry about bills etc. Not sure re avilability but a colleague of mine stayed in the studio for a couple of months when he first moved here and really rated it

Veterinari · 13/04/2018 08:42

Legally minimum let us 6 months so you can’t rent something shorter than this.

You could find a flat via Air bnb for a month or so if that would work better?

Drum71 · 13/04/2018 08:43

Scottish renting laws changed last December. Leases can be terminated on both sides by giving 28 days notice. There are no 6 month contracts anymore.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 13/04/2018 09:12

If my flat was available i’d be quite happy renting it for a short time given the circumstances, and now the rental laws have changed. Before I wouldn’t have even consideredfor less than 6 months.

1haudyerwheesht · 13/04/2018 11:38

What about Airbnb?

Ki0612 · 13/04/2018 13:15

They are right any flat can be let short term now as just need 28 days notice.

MoreProsecco · 13/04/2018 19:06

Hi Jessie, a few thoughts: also consider the Southside eg Shawlands, Strathbungo, Pollockshields etc - these are very safe & cosmopolitan areas, with good transport links to the QEH.

It might be worth offering to cover the LL's tenant-finder costs (usually costs me £400+ every change of tenants) to make a shorter lease more appealing.

I wonder if the hospital has any short term accommodation ideas? They might have details for agency/temporary staff. Perhaps HR or PALS could help.

Skyllo30 · 13/04/2018 22:02

There’s no accommodation on site, unlike what you might find in some older hospitals.

There’s usually lots for rent in the Cardonald area which is right next to the hospital so walking distance.

If she’s going to be using public transport (because parking can be tough) look along the main bus routes. Lots go into the west end. First 77 goes into the west end then city centre. First 34A goes to shawlands then onto Castlemilk. Stagecoach X19 is the fastest to the city centre.

You can tell I used to work there. Grin I believe there’s another car park open now so not sure if parking is any better?

JessieMcJessie · 13/04/2018 23:20

Thanks Skyllo. The ward have given her a parking permit. Not sure how long that will last.
She has found something on air b n b close to the hotel for a couple of weeks so that will give a bit of breathing space.

Glad she’s got something.
