an old family friend is starting to get dementia and is in a nursing home. We visit her once a week. She's been talking about missing her home. Saying she grew up in Glasgow in 'cadona street'. We asked if she meant 'caledonia', she says no. We think she grew up near gallowgate but we can't find any sign of such a street :(
I was hoping to print off some old pictures of the area she grew up for her christmas and decorate her nursing home room with framed pictures.
She's 89 so would have been living in this street in the 1930/40s/50s before getting married and moving elsewhere
If anyone knows this street or can help with old pictures please let me know.

If you're on FB I'd second the suggestion about Lost Glasgow. There's a ton of knowledge on there

Was any of that helpful for her @fcek?

Can you try Cadona Avenue, Cadona Lane, Cadona Drive etc etc? Can you ask her to spell it, point out landmarks, ask what number etc?

Hi everyone

Not much more information from my wee 'auntie' as I call her, I'm afraid. She's just saying the same thing, sounds like cadona street. She did say it's near "all the shops" and how she used to walk to the barrowland dancing all the time. So it's definitely in that area.

I'm so frustrated! Maybe I'll just search for old barrowland photos and area around that to show her.

Maybe Cadogan Street? Think that is city centre so would be close to shops?

What about the building known as the C'a d'oro? It's at the corner of Gordon St and Union St. (Got a Sainsbury's in it now, I think). Explanation here

Put an appeal out to lostglagow (Facebook page). The man himself or a page fan must surely know! Lots of streets have had their names changed.

Useful information and photos of the Calton area here

www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=32312&p=0

No mention ofCadona Street but your friend will remember lots of the other buildings mentioned here.

I think it’s worth asking about church, as a PP said. Even she’s not a practising Christian now, the vast majority of Glaswegians of her generation had a nominal church connnection.

If you ask her what primary school she went to, that will enable you to narrow down the geographical area for your search.
