an old family friend is starting to get dementia and is in a nursing home. We visit her once a week. She's been talking about missing her home. Saying she grew up in Glasgow in 'cadona street'. We asked if she meant 'caledonia', she says no. We think she grew up near gallowgate but we can't find any sign of such a street :(
I was hoping to print off some old pictures of the area she grew up for her christmas and decorate her nursing home room with framed pictures.
She's 89 so would have been living in this street in the 1930/40s/50s before getting married and moving elsewhere
If anyone knows this street or can help with old pictures please let me know.

Was just about to post that map link. It's so good!

fcek · 25/11/2017 18:59

I can't figure out how to use that map?

You might need to zoom out for the picture, use the add and subtract buttons at the top of the menu, beside 'Find a Place'.

fcek · 25/11/2017 19:12

working now but still no sign of any street that could be it. arrrgh. I'll find a solution one way or another!

I'm dying to know now as well! She would have lived at such an interesting time, with all of the new schemes being built and the old city being demolished. The Gallowgate really was old Glasgow.

Glaswegians have a terrible habit of saying that they're from the Calton, and meaning that they were born in the Calton and moved to Cumbernauld aged 2!

Gingernaut · 25/11/2017 19:29

Anything to do with the Codona family? Although their in Aberdeen....

fcek · 25/11/2017 19:59

nope nothing to do with the codonas. I'm still sitting here searching old maps and google. Going to get my mum to ask some more probing questions when she goes in next week.

I think cause she's getting dementia maybe she's getting confused, who knows.

I just want to help as she keeps asking us to take her on a visit there too. Not possible as she's so frail (plus we can't find the bloody street!)

Even if the street has gone (I'm thinking of the huuuuge Tesco at the Gallowgate) there's definitely old photos of the Gallowgate around.

If she could narrow it down to near Duke St/ the Royal/ Abercromby St/ Fielden St you'd be even closer.

I'm looking at a 1931 street directory and the nearest I can get is Cardonald but it's Gardens, in SW2 district.

It does list surnames, so if you can find out her birth name I could try searching for that.

Dreamstosell · 25/11/2017 20:19

If you asked her what her maiden name was and had her date of birth you could get her birth certificate and see the address on that. Obviously that might not be the address she’s talking about but you might be lucky.

fcek · 25/11/2017 21:42

youse have all been so helpful. Okay so my mum's mission is to find out what her birth name was, where her street was near, and maybe even the school she went to.

She's a lovely wee lady, was very good to us as kids and I'll never forget her kindness with my poor gran when she was widowed. So sad that she has no family or friends her own age anymore, just their kids (like us) to visit.

I looked at the 1912 Post Office directory and Cadona Street certainly didn't exist in Glasgow in 1912.

Hauntedlobster · 25/11/2017 23:09

I’m in the east end, sounds like it’s not there anymore but if you need anything checked out I’m your woman!

Hauntedlobster · 25/11/2017 23:16

CORUNNA STREET, commemorative of Sir John Moore's victory over the French on 16th January, 1809.

StatueInTheSky · 25/11/2017 23:17

not the name of a cafe/bakers something like that??

I know my ma used to work in the Cadena Cafe, but pretty sure they were SW England, not nation wide

HittheDiff · 25/11/2017 23:33

Corunna Street is in Anderston, surely far too far west.

I think it must have been a wee lane or row of closes, possibly connected to the fairground folk at Vinegar Hill.

TheTasteOfInk · 25/11/2017 23:38

How old is she? An ex is a calton boy, knows bloody everything bout the area. Sure he'll know

TheTasteOfInk · 25/11/2017 23:40

89 ypu twat, read properly Blush have screenshot and sent ex

ChinkChink · 25/11/2017 23:51

You what? Shock

Gingernaut · 26/11/2017 07:09

TheTasteOfInk asked a question in the first comment that was answered in the original post.

The second comment was TheTasteOfInk realising this and telling herself off and she has also screenshot the post and sent it to her ex as he used to live in the area and knows about the place.

ChinkChink · 26/11/2017 08:29
Grin

Aaaah I see. Thanks Gingernaut

EmilyAlice · 26/11/2017 08:36

Could she be talking about a street where the Kardomah cafe was? They were all over the place from about 1900 and very popular.

fcek · 26/11/2017 10:54

I did notice corunna street, but yes too far from gallowgate.

Mum usually visits on a Tuesday so hopefully I'll have a better idea then.
