Travelling to Glasgow Uni?

DD and I are heading over to Glasgow Uni from the East coast on Saturday. I keep being told the parking is awful, but I’m very nervous about getting the underground etc, having never been on it before. I had planned to bus it over but apparently it’s too far from the bus station to walk?

What would you think is best? Bus/train/drive, Glaswegian folks?

The website just says that you need to live outwith a reasonable travelling distance but it depends on what they deem "reasonable" i guess.

I've looked and it's over 30 miles by car but a reasonable commute by train and underground but he would still need a car as it's about a 40 minute walk to the train station. By which point he could have driven almost there...

In contrast to Strathclyde, he already meets the standard requirements (and exceeds the minimum) for anything he would be likely to apply for so it would seem a safer bet although Strathclyde would be an easier commute...

howabout · 19/10/2017 16:55

No harm in applying to both Glasgow and Strathclyde. Both good and both have higher than average Scottish students from normal backgrounds. Worth bearing in mind that there is a high percentage of local students who commute in both at least for 1st year. This means the student body tends to split into local commuters and campus students. That does impact on "campus" social life a bit.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/10/2017 17:01

Strathclyde said (according to DH) that there is no point applying if you don't meet the requirements. They require an A in maths at Higher and DS missed it by one point. He is doing AH maths but I'm not sure if that means if he gets a B in that he will meet the requirements or if he'll never meet the requirements as he didn't get that A.

Whilst I am originally an Edinburger and I would generally favour that, I think being more "ordinary" in terms of background and given how quiet he is, I want him to feel comfortable. That's probably why I liked Heriot Watt as it seemed quite nurturing and "safe". That said, his school friends are all academic and wealthy so...

howabout · 19/10/2017 17:22

DD1 says a B at Advanced Higher converts to meet a missed A Higher requirement. I think she picked it up from the prospectus (she is blessed / cursed with the ability to sift and retain massive volumes of miscellania), so should be checkable.

DH is English and studied science at an English Uni. However he did a lot of touring as a "Rag" committee rep and he likes Herriot Watt. His only misgiving was that it is a bit far out from Edinburgh proper.

DD2 would live up a tree in a muddy field if I let her so she is considering Stirling for a campus experience.

We're off up to Aberdeen tomorrow. Day trip by train.

Ds was very impressed with Strathclyde after I nagged him to check it out and is now going to drop Glasgow in favour of Strathclyde on his application form.

Provided Aberdeen is "ok" Wink, his choices will be Edinburgh x 2, Strathclyde, St Andrews and Aberdeen.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/10/2017 18:02

HW is a bit out of Edinburgh but handy for the travelling for us :)

There is a very good bus service into town though but I suspect the "captive market" element might make it easier to make friends too.

I was just up helping with the UCAS form as he's to have it filled in for next week. We've done most of it except the personal statement (which he hasn't started yet) and the subject choices - and I've paid the fee to school. He's requested his references so things are moving on.

Hi all - lurking now as dd is now at Glasgow altho we are in the NE near Aberdeen. We visited Strathclyde , Edinburgh and Glasgow Open Days .

We were very keen on Strathclyde until dd went to the offer holder day - compared very badly to both Dundee and Glasgow and meant dd had Glasgow as first choice with Dundee not Strathclyde as insurance.

I was doubtful about the value of visiting for offer holder days but they were more focussed on the subject and were really useful. Does mean twice the trekking about the country tho.

Survived the subway 👍🏼😂

Star Have a great day Wine and I hope your DD enjoys Glasgow.

Me and DD3 (aged 6) usually spend most of our time playing hide and seek in the cloisters and looking for dinosaurs in the Hunterian when we go to science festival in June.

Just discussing tickets for "Imagineer" with my older 2. It is a free engineering based comedy show at the Boyd Orr in December aimed at 16+, for anyone else interested.

LordPercy · 21/10/2017 12:06

We’re heading for a talk in the Boyd Orr building next. Having a pit stop in Pizza Express just now 🤗

Making me properly jealous of your day out now. Envy

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/10/2017 14:00

You must have been on same tube as us percy my ticket is 9.34. Wink

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/10/2017 14:00

We are now at queen street waiting on train home.

LordPercy · 21/10/2017 15:14

We are currently wandering about Buchanan Galleries. Next bus to the park and ride is 4.10. DD is very impressed with Glasgow but I preferred Dundee! Stirling next week

My oldest has just started at Glasgow. There is a public transport travel time for getting into halls. I think it's anything under 1 hour 20 minutes you are not guaranteed a place. She just scraped it!

RJnomore1 · 21/10/2017 15:17

Dundee is much much much cheaper for accommodation.

Superjaggy · 21/10/2017 19:49

Lord, glad you both enjoyed Glasgow and survived the Subway! I loved the uni but my DS prefers Aberdeen, I’m quite gutted about it. Have a few months —to wear him down— for him to change his mind though.

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/10/2017 19:57

I have no clue whether DS liked it or not and he still has no idea what to apply for - I give up.

Superjaggy · 21/10/2017 19:59

Wax, which talks did your DS attend? He still has plenty time to decide!

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/10/2017 20:00

Given that there is only presentation that DS will be interested in at Stirling and he can walk there, I am bowing out next week. If it's peeing down then I'll drop him off in the car.....maybe....

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/10/2017 20:03

We went to Computing, the Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Mechanical Engineering - most of the rest overlapped.

We did the Computing tour - 7 fecking floors by the stairs to look at 2 rooms with tables, chairs and computers... we left at that point as he was taking us to the third room of the same.

Superjaggy · 21/10/2017 20:07

Oh. Confused

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/10/2017 20:10

That's the first tour we've gone on - I'd hoped for something more interesting tbh. Electrical talk spent the first half talking about the californian gold rush - still not really sure what the relevance was Confused

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/10/2017 20:14

I don't know Glasgow well and had never been in that part before, I liked it and we cut through a lane on the way back to the underground and passed the ubiquitous chip and the little cinema there. I also found the travelling really straight forward. All positives. Not sure if I particularly warmed to the uni though but it's not me that's going so that's not that important.

Best computing presentation I've been to was Edinburgh and best Engineering presentation was one of the Heriot Watt ones.

LordPercy · 22/10/2017 10:00

DD is still snoring (not unusual) as she’s whacked after all that fresh air and exercise yesterday. She’s realised that she hasn’t looked at Aberdeen as an option so is going to look into that. My brother is up there and I have other family nearby too so it could work.

I’m also off to name change again as I’ve had this one for longer than I’d like so beware me popping up on other threads like a newbie 😂
