I think we all found the thread last year useful and supportive so I've set this one up for us all to share our woe, angst and (hopefully) joy for the 2017 exam season. I'm also trying to have something on Scotsnet that isn't politics. I'm trying to avoid that tbh as it just all makes me too angry...

Anyway, I have two going through it this year, DS1 in 5th year sitting 5 Highers and DS2 in 4th year sitting 7 Nat5s.

Studying has been underway since the prelims ended. They are doing 3 x 25 minute Pomodoro sessions on weekdays and 4 sessions each day at the weekend. To be honest it's mainly been used for the coursework up until now but the last piece is due in today for DS1 and DS2s is all in now so proper study can commence.

How is everyone feeling?

prettybird as she's been speaking gaelic since age 4 she sits the native speaker exams - much like Engish. They dont have to sit H gaelic but she chose it - her career preference right now is art teaching and to be able to teach in GME she needs higher. Also why she's resitting N5 maths in S6.

We're on a gap now until 30th May, then 2nd June. Dd hopes she might pick up a few shifts at work (she has a p/t job in Maccy d's) as its a long time with only a wee bit of revision. Its nice having her at home!

Groovee · 11/05/2017 16:26

Dd was delighted with the higher paper. I pity her poor marker! 42 pages per paper she wrote 🙈

IndigoApple · 11/05/2017 17:50

DD thought the close reading and poetry went well but didn't like the essay however she is mostly just happy it's over. Nothing now till Physics on Wed.

42 pages is good going! Smile

Superjaggy · 11/05/2017 18:48

Hi all, glad H English seems to have gone well for your DCs, it went well for my DS too. He loved the close reading as he too likes a good moan about crap pop music! He also felt the questions on his Carol Ann Duffy poems and View from a Bridge were good.

Small break now and two exams next week - more than half way there :)

LordPercy · 11/05/2017 20:29

DS thought Adv H English was okay but only wrote 28 pages this time 😂. That's him finished with school bar getting his leavers slip signed, picking up his leavers hoodie and going to prom.

DD meanwhile is stressing about English tomorrow. Something to do with needing 2 poems by the same poet and her teacher only teaching one from each poet? She's up to ninety and I'm away to talk her down again

celtiethree · 11/05/2017 20:49

Positive feedback on DS1 on higher English! Just two to go.

Lidlfix · 11/05/2017 22:32

Percy, never seen a Nat 5 question asking for 2 poems never mind by the same poet.

readsalotgirl63 · 11/05/2017 22:41

DD thought AH English was "ok" - not her favourite subject so think its been a bit of a slog this year. Only one more to go and then she too will be finished with school - apart from prom ! It feels really quite odd and we seem to have got to this point really quickly Confused Good luck to everyone's dc

WankersHacksandThieves · 12/05/2017 16:11

Ds2 had Nat 5 English this morning. He thinks it went fairly well. However the fire alarm went off during the 2nd paper and he was evacuated from the ICT suite where he was doing his exam (they didn't evacuate the main hall where the rest of the school were doing the exam) and then he ended up leaving early as he thought he'd miss his train! I'd given him the details of 3. One he'd catch if the exam started and finished early which they have so far, one he'd most likely get and another just in case.

He didn't have the nouse to think that there would likely be others not too much later (plus he was hungry by then) so he told the invigilator he was going to miss his train and asked if he could he leave early. He says he was finished and didn't rush it but I'm not convinced.

I scribed for a pupil sitting the Nat 5 English exam this morning. I thought the comprehension paper was very fair. The article was a piece published in The Times and was called 'Resilience'. The 'odd' word they introduced was 'meritocracy' which might have thrown some pupils, but otherwise I think most bright pupils will have done well.

LordPercy · 12/05/2017 17:18

DD is in an uncharacteristic flap about the 2nd N5 paper today. We'll see. She's got French, physics and Mod next week and Eng Science the following Thursday to go.

WankersHacksandThieves · 12/05/2017 18:04

DS1 has Computing H and Physics H next week.
DS2 has French, BM and Mod next week and that's him done so he has a couple of weeks to tidy his bedroom chill out.

Don't talk to me about bedrooms Angry

WankersHacksandThieves · 12/05/2017 21:15

Don't talk to me about bedrooms

I have it multiplied by 2... :(

Dd has modern studies and biology to go.

musicteacheriz · 14/05/2017 20:12

DD is stressing about business management on Tuesday as she feels her teacher didn't teach them half the stuff they needed Confused

Groovee · 14/05/2017 21:54

Oh music that's not good.

dementedma · 14/05/2017 21:57

DS has two NAT 5s to go then nothing to do until June 5th!

WankersHacksandThieves · 14/05/2017 22:07

Oh dear music hopefully she's learned enough and the right stuff comes up.

DS2 stressing about French tomorrow. It's the writing bit that is the main concern. He just can't remember it. He got no points at all for that section in the prelim.

He's just said to me that this time tomorrow he will never have to do French again.

dd2 is now off for 2 weeks until Art and then Gaidhlig. I don't expect to see her in the mornings much! I think theres pretty much zero chance of her tidying her room, and after Wednesday The Boyfriend is finished so I expect to see quite a lot of him!!

ssd · 15/05/2017 22:40

music, our kids might have the same teacher, ds said he came second in his class prelim and he scraped 50%....

YerAWizardHarry · 15/05/2017 22:52

I myself sat the higher history and English exams and thought both were fair! Sociology on the 24th then Psychology on the 31st and I'm finished!

musicteacheriz · 16/05/2017 12:11

@ssd how did your son find the exam? Daughter said not many people passed Prelim in her class - she had bang on 50 too.

WankersHacksandThieves · 16/05/2017 12:24

DS said it went better than expected. He got 46 in prelim.

OP posts:
ssd · 16/05/2017 12:25

he said there were parts of it his class had not been taught, he asked friends in the other class and they all knew what a certain 4 mark question meant but all of his classmates hadnt a clue "even the smart people"!!

the bus man teachers in his school just don't seem that great, his brother did bus man and said the same.

ds2 is hoping he passed, he said he knows he didnt get an A but is hoping for a B.
