Not wearing a kilt to a wedding - excuses needed!

Family member is getting married soon. Some of the men in my extended family and all on her side are wearing kilts - it's a sign of being Scottish apparently

DH and DS1 have no interest whatsoever in wearing a kilt. They want to wear a nice suit - but are worried that this will mark them down as snobs/weirdos/insert name of choice here by some of the more vocal members of the group.

What's a good response to this nonsense if anyone starts? (yes Uncle, I am looking g at you)

I'm still gobsmacked and saddened that there are people who would be so crass as to judge others for choosing not to wear a kilt SadShockAngry

And I say that as someone who likes men of all shapes and sizes in kilts.

Bit distracting for a wedding though Wankers

It's a bit distracting full stop. I'm coming over all unnecessary :o

Why on earth would your husband and son want to wear a garment invented by an Englishman? A Lancastrian at that?

The give them a history of Thomas Rawlinson.

Ginmakesitallok · 25/07/2016 09:21

I love a man in a kilt! After 46 years dp finally got round to buying his own this year. He looks fantastic in it. But I agree with pps that the Highland shirt thing is awful! As is a kilt which is the wrong length.

derxa · 01/08/2016 14:27

This kilt wearing at weddings was never a thing for my dad's generation. And he was the most Scottish man I ever knew! It started with my brother's generation and he would have been about 54 now.

Say you saw a documentary where someone passed one of those blue light things over a hired kilt and it was riddled with pish and poo crumbs. That should put their jabots at a peek.

AnnieOnnieMouse · 02/08/2016 22:34

Tell them he has to wear trousers to cover his electronic police tag Grin

dementedma · 06/08/2016 17:13

Kilts do NOT look good on everyone. Some guys really shouldn't go there. Plus they are expensive to hire, hot and heavy to wear once you add sporran, waistcoat and jacket.
Having said that, next week I am off to the Edinburgh Tattoo. Now those chaps know how to wear a kilt!!!

IveAlreadyPaid · 06/08/2016 17:22

What do you call a highlander in a suit? Guilty!

Trills · 06/08/2016 17:50

Whatever happens do not go for the tartan trousers, they are ghastly.

dementedma · 06/08/2016 20:07

Agree that trews look ridiculous and very poncey!

SouthWestmom · 06/08/2016 20:14

I don't know really, if they have a tartan and already have a kilt then it's just like sticking your best suit on. My lot are all Scottish (highlands and islands) so had kilts in their colours and just wore them.

I went to an English wedding and the guests all wore kilts in tartans they liked which was odd but harmless.

Kr1stina · 07/08/2016 21:16

Of course your DH doesn't need to wear a kilt if he doesn't want to . It's just I don't understand why He doesn't want to. Men get so few chances in life to dress up . When they wear a suit they just look kike it's another day in the office . Deeply boring .

Why should women be the only ones to get dressed up in a Special outfit ?
