Hi all,
We are planning on moving to Newton mearns and Eastwood High and Crookfur Primary would be our catchment schools. I know friends in the area who have kids in Crookfur and have heard lots of lovely things about the school. I don't know anyone with kids in Eastwood High school but have read the HMI report and newsletters and it looks like a lovely school. Anyone with any experience of the school?

Thanks in advance.

Eastwood is a great school. My kids will go to it in a few years time.

The school was just rebuilt a couple of years ago as the previous school was about 40 or 50 years old, so it's all new facilities and very impressive. It has a good reputation for its drama department.

Some people will no doubt say it's not as good as the other NM school Mearns Castle but it's a great school.

Thanks punkman.
The building is lovely and the sports facilities looks amazing. My friend had a tour of the school and said that the facilities are as good as the private schools.

Do you know anyone with personal experience of the school?

Me. Ask away 😀

cna11 · 09/04/2016 21:08

Oh lovely, Behooven. Thank you. What's your experience with the school? How are the facilities? Teaching? Do they challenge the kids academically? I am still trying to get my head round the new curriculum. Is there any support for parents? Lol.

Brain gone blank on questions. Would be lovely to just hear your experiences.

Hello there, any one sending kids to EASTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL? Hows the school and the teachers ? We lived near the school when it was getting built 5 yrs ago but we had to move to Dundee due to job comitments and now plan to relocate to Newton Mearns... my son attended Crookfur primary for an year at that time & we all liked it... Any suggestions will be welcome. Regards, Ash

AmeliaMae · 18/12/2018 19:17

Everyone I know who has dc at Crookfur and Eastwood seem to be happy with the schools. It's a nice area to live in.

Seniorcitizen1 · 19/12/2018 18:46

If you want your son to go to Eastwood High Shool please check with ERC education dept to make sure your new home is in the catchment area - boundaries have changed since you have been away

BizzyLizzieBeth · 28/12/2018 12:03

My children attend here and they both really enjoy school, it does stretch them academically, but it also celebrates pupils wider achievements, such as in sport etc. I have been particularly impressed with their maths department, as mine went from leaving primary school not so confident in the subject to thriving in it just now.

AmeliaMae · 28/12/2018 14:32

Bizzy do you know if it is a good school for pupils who require extra support because they have dyslexia or other support needs.

drashish77 · 06/01/2019 12:51

Thanks for the info... i have asked the educational dept:

drashish77 · 06/01/2019 12:52

Thanks...

drashish77 · 06/01/2019 12:54

Good to hear that... my son will love that...he is good with maths... my daughter isnt good in maths and she will improve then...

drashish77 · 06/01/2019 13:00

Subject: placement request... any one who has any experience in applying or getting or being rejected for placement request in Mearns Castle Secondary and Kirkhill Primary School if you live in catchment of other good school like Eastwood Secondary and Crookfur primary... any suggestions are welcome... thanks in advance... wish all a happy new year...

drashish77 · 06/01/2019 13:03

Special thanks to Amelia, SeniorCitizen1, BizzyLizzieBeth... much appreciated...

TinTinBanana · 06/01/2019 14:29

I worked with someone who moved into the catchment area for kirkhill and mearns castle but couldn't get all her children places. They had to go to Williamwood and a primary in Clarkston. Not sure how long ago this was, a few years ago maybe longer.

I know people who have been successful with placing requests to Crookfur when they live in the catchment for Mearns primary.

Has something put you off Eastwood?

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/01/2019 16:16

A placing request will be dealt with under the criteria set down by the council. I've never seen any criteria that would discriminate based on the quality of the school you are in the catchment for. Our criteria (which I think is fairly standard) is in the following order (from memory) 1. Special requirement for that school (usually more for schools with special units e.g. autism) 2. Cared for or care experienced child 3. child of a single parent household or sibling at the school, the last category is distance to the school by normal road route, not as the crow flies ( that is only used if they have to choose between 2 children for 1 space and all other categories are equal).

I would contact ERC Education dept before you buy/move. This year (18/19)Crookfur P1 was oversubscribed and some children had to be redirected to other ER schools. Same in a few other ER schools this year. Very few pupils will be admitted on placing requests in future years, at both Primary and Secondary levels, as catchment numbers are increasing, due to housebuilding.Priorities for placing requests changed this school year, but many schools won't have spaces left to allocate any placing requests. All ER schools are excellent. My niece is at Eastwood and loves it/ is thriving. My children went to Kirkhill and MCHS.

WH1SPERS · 08/01/2019 20:09

It’s very very hard to get a placement request to the schools you mention. I’d advise you NOT to move into the area unless you are happy with the catchment Schools. You cannot depend on a successful placing request. It’s getting harder year on year as more new housing is built.

Crookfur and Eastwood are both excellent schools, I know many parents whose children attend there.

Seniorcitizen1 · 09/01/2019 22:30

I don’t know where waxon got her info about priorities for placing requests but they are way off the mark. ERC website or meeting with official is only place for accurate info. Priorities are changing for August 2019 entry and siblings are moving down the list

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/01/2019 23:42

Senior, they may be off the mark for ERC ( i don't know because I haven't looked) but are entirely on the mark for my council where I applied for and gained placing requests Hmm I specifically said it was for my council. Do ERC at any point list as one of the criteria that your catchment school must be rubbish? No, didn't think so...

It's a pity that manners aren't higher up the list.

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/01/2019 23:50

Here is the list for ERC.
Order of Priorities for Granting Placing Requests
To All Roman Catholic and Non-Denominational Primary and Secondary Schools
Effective for School Session Commencing August 2019 and Beyond:
Placing Requests (Other than Oversubscription by Catchment)
The criteria below are used to prioritise places to placing request applications from those who do not
reside within the delineated catchment area of the school, in order of priority:

  1. East Renfrewshire residents where the child has a medical condition, supported with
evidence from a medical practitioner, and requires facilities or support available only in the requested school.
  1. Non-East Renfrewshire residents where the child has a medical condition, supported with
evidence from a medical practitioner, and requires facilities or support available only in the requested school.
  1. East Renfrewshire residents: when applying for secondary schools, children who attend a
primary school associated with the secondary school according to the length of time at the associated primary. This means that pupils who have attended the school for the longest time will have the highest priority.
  1. Non-East Renfrewshire residents: when applying for secondary schools, children who
attend a primary school associated with the secondary school according to the length of time at the associated primary. This means that pupils who have attended the school for the longest time will have the highest priority.
  1. Those cases where a brother or sister attends the school and will continue in this school
during the next session.
  1. East Renfrewshire residents: the child is part of a single parent/carer family where it
would be advantageous to the care and welfare of the child to attend the requested school. Please provide details with your application.
  1. Non-East Renfrewshire residents: the child is part of a single parent/carer family where it
would be advantageous to the care and welfare of the child to attend the requested school. Please provide details with your application.
  1. East Renfrewshire residents with no other listed priority
  2. Non-East Renfrewshire residents with no other listed priority.

I forgot to differentiate between children in the council area and those outwith which our council does do, however our council does not take any account of which primary was attended.

Seniorcitizen1 · 10/01/2019 10:00

waxon given that this thread is about Eastwood High the priorities of ERC are relevant - priorities of other LAs not relevant

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/01/2019 12:19

More with the charm offensive....

The OP asked if already having a good school as catchment would affect the criteria for acceptance of a placing request. I said it was unlikely and gave example of fairly standard criteria.

Where is the useful information you've added?

I appreciate it's not always possible to read tone in a posting, but your posts come across very arsey for no good reason.
