The Forth Road Bridge is totally closed...

...what a nightmare that is going to be.

I live in Fife and DH works in Edinburgh. He gets the train but now they will be mobbed. Not good for businesses as a whole. The Kincardine Bridge will be mobbed and the roads around there are not great.

I hope they fix it soon.

Our childcare is going to be totally messed up. No idea what we are going to do Sad A lot depends on how understanding employers are going to be.

Pacific · 04/12/2015 15:25

I'm in Edinburgh but bought a groupon voucher for a Christmas tree at Halbeath. No way am I driving all the way to Kincardine Bridge for £20 tree! May be treeless Christmas for me Sad

slicedfinger · 04/12/2015 15:29

Ever so glad they noticed the problem though! I'd rather have a bit of chaos for a few weeks than an unplanned dip in the Forth!

MrsJayy · 04/12/2015 15:33

Kincardine bridge is getting closed periodically to cope with the traffic we got over but had to use clackmanan coming back. Poor folk that need to commute though traffiv was nuts today

pictish · 04/12/2015 15:33

It is going to be complete chaos for many. But you know what's worse than three weeks of chaos? Death via a collapsed bridge.

It's a nightmare but there's nothing else they can do.

MrsJayy · 04/12/2015 15:56

Aye you are right nobody wants to plunge into the forth

HirplesWithHaggis · 04/12/2015 16:12

Just as well the new crossing is well underway! Due to open next year, though I can't find a date more specific than 2016.

Iggi999 · 04/12/2015 17:19

How does closing Kincardine bridge help with the traffic? Confused

Perihelion · 04/12/2015 17:26

Think the new bridge is due to open next December. Hopefully shutting for a few weeks now will mean the the old bridge can cope till then.......
Wondering if they're really going to put on a ferry and where to?

NorthernLurker · 04/12/2015 17:31

Dd is getting the train to Dundee on Sunday for a med school interview. Hope it isn't too grim but at least lovely in laws are picking her up. Very pleased we aren't going up to inlaws for Christmas though.

We were there at the beginning of November and had to go in to Edinburgh with the family for nephew's dedication service. Bridge was closed so we were heading for Kincardine but then there was an accident on the main road so we had to take to highways and byways to get to Kincardine. Total nightmare!

MrsJayy · 04/12/2015 17:33

Its to do with traffic volume or something police were on kincardine bridge today it was 1 way only

stargirl1701 · 04/12/2015 17:39

Talk of a ferry service to replace the bridge on the news at lunchtime.

NorthernLurker · 04/12/2015 17:46

This is handy

StoorieHoose · 04/12/2015 17:49

Think the plan was to have north bound traffic on Kincardine bridge and south bound on the Clackmannan . mind you if these winds keep up the Clackmannan bridge will close.

doceodocere · 04/12/2015 17:55

I am so happy we don't have to go to Edinburgh before the new year. I feel so sorry for all the people who use it for their daily commute.

Varya · 04/12/2015 17:57

A real disaster for Scots, trying to get to work or appointments.

janethegirl2 · 04/12/2015 18:00

Apparently it's now closed until the New Year.

Iggi999 · 04/12/2015 18:01

Thanks MrsJayy.
The ferry would just be a passenger one, so you are still relying on public transport on either side.
Am trying not to feel like the run up to Christmas has been ruined for our family, but it's hard!

cashewnutty · 04/12/2015 18:08

Iggi999. How is your Christmas ruined? You can still travel over the Kincardine bridge but things will just take a little longer.

Total nightmare, not enough train carriages for all the extra commuters.

Iggi999 · 04/12/2015 18:17

I don't mean that, and I know it's silly - but we have only a couple of weeks left at work, and hoping to start to relax and do more Christmassy things - and get all the cards written, parcels posted etc - in a nice relaxed atmosphere, and instead everyday till the schools go off will be about who's turn it is to be late in for work, longer more stressful journeys, additional expense, worrying about just how many favours can we ask of the childminder, taking work home as I've had to leave so quickly etc. There are far worse problems, but this is something I wasn't expecting to add to my "plate" just now!

INeedSomeHelp · 04/12/2015 18:17

I live in Fife and work in Edinburgh and take the train every day. I worked from home today because expected the trains to be chaos but I can't do that every day for three weeks.
My partner lives in Glasgow so not expecting to see him much as it will be so much busier coming via Kincardine which is what he would usually do. Going via Stirling will probably be the best option although it's a bit further.

Eigg · 04/12/2015 18:20

Of course they made the correct decision to close the bridge, safety is paramount but it's going to make the commute fairly hellish.

I've apologised to my boss in advance.

He was very nice about it but I'm not relishing next week. My commute already takes 90 mins, goodness knows what it will be next week.

Groovee · 04/12/2015 18:26

Scary stuff. SIL keeps moaning.
