Any Scottish protest planned about the refugee crisis?

There's a thread in AIBU titled 'Am on the way to Downing Street' by someone who took it upon herself to protest against our governments inability to act like human beings with actual beating hearts.

Does anyone know of any protests taking place in Scotland? Or maybe we could arrange one? Hordes of MNers waving placards and wearing MN scarves might add to the turning tide of public opinion just a little?

Thanks for starting this. I have looked on a few websites - Scottidh Refugee Council, Glasgow WelcomesRefugees but can't see any protest planned. There must be something. If not agree we should organise one.

AgentProvocateur · 02/09/2015 20:56

There's something in George Square on Saturday, I think, but more of a candlelit vigil than a protest. I'll see if I can find details, and post them here.

MrsBalustradeLanyard · 02/09/2015 20:56

Hurrah, the cavalry! I've no idea how to go about organising anything. To be honest I'm hoping someone with some good ideas will be along shortly...

I'd be interested of anything in Edinburgh
Does anyone know what the SNP view is on the crisis?

AgentProvocateur · 02/09/2015 21:02

OK - found it. It's a FB page called Glasgow Sees Syria. Anyone can join the group, and the vigil is a week on Saturday, the 12th Sept.

There's also another group called Scottish Action For Refugees (SAFR) who have a list of things they're collecting (and a list of things that aren't needed) for trips to Calais.

Of course, this is only useful information if you're on FB.

Thanks AP, I'll look at SAFR.

I'm surprised RISE arent planning anything.

Ubik1 · 02/09/2015 21:13

Don't want to derail.. But WTF is balustrade lanyard? It is on my Twitter feed regularly Confused

AgentProvocateur · 02/09/2015 21:17

Google it. That's part of the fun Grin

Excellent! I was distracted from the Refugee Children thread by bedtime/teething baby. I'd definitely be interested in something in Edinburgh, potentially Glasgow. Though unsure of logistics of taking DCs with me, which I would have to do.

I'm following Scottish Refugee Council on Facebook, and going to write to my MP (SNP) and MSP (Lab) though need to think of what to write, because I don't think a "for fucks sake do SOMETHING" is the most eloquent way to express myself.

Also Grin at BalustradeLanyard.

SunshineAndShadows · 02/09/2015 21:37

Thanks Agent

Shenanagins · 02/09/2015 21:37

Thanks for sharing details of the vigil. Hope to be there.

MrsBalustradeLanyard · 02/09/2015 21:50

I don't think I can be there. Sad

Really glad to know that there is something planned though. This is the most upsetting thing I've struggled with for a long time. I guess it's to do with being a mother. Those pictures. Those children. What became of their lives. Fucking hell.

On Radio Scotland this morning Sturgeon said that she's already written to Cameron saying that Scotland is willing to take people in.

Thanks for sharing the vigil info.

MrsBalustradeLanyard · 02/09/2015 22:06

Like he'll give a fuck. Makes me all the more sad that we lost the referendum.

BearFoxBear · 02/09/2015 22:22

He won't, he's a piece of shit. I truly hope that the people who voted Tory understand that they've allowed this to happen. Disgusting.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 02/09/2015 22:23

Can't we all march on the Scottish Parliament waving placards and MN scarves? Candlelit vigils sound a bit...tame for MN.

RedButtonhole · 02/09/2015 22:36

I'm not sure I'd be able to make it to a protest, I live miles away from Glasgow/ Edinburgh.

Locally though there is a group who have set up collections if items that are needed, I will donate to them and hopefully be able to help there by giving some time as a volunteer.

Try searching Calaid on FB if you are interested in finding something similar.

AgentProvocateur · 02/09/2015 22:46

There would be no point marching to the Scottish Parliament. It's not a devolved issue. All we can do is put pressure on our MPs, but at least 56 of them will hopefully already be arguing for the UK to do more.

faintlyoptimistic · 03/09/2015 00:57

Thanks for starting this. I was following the other thread and wondering how to find out about protests and donations nearby. I'll have a look at those fb groups.

The fact that this is devolved and the hands of our government are tied just makes me feel so helpless. Here were are saying yes we can help but we are being prevented from doing so. By 'we' I mean Scotland as a country of course.

BearFoxBear · 03/09/2015 09:21

A vigil is definitely more appropriate here. It's not like our own government doesn't want to do something, it does. It's Westminster that's stopping any action being taken.
