Any Scottish protest planned about the refugee crisis?

There's a thread in AIBU titled 'Am on the way to Downing Street' by someone who took it upon herself to protest against our governments inability to act like human beings with actual beating hearts.

Does anyone know of any protests taking place in Scotland? Or maybe we could arrange one? Hordes of MNers waving placards and wearing MN scarves might add to the turning tide of public opinion just a little?

I think the vigil is at 1430 on Saturday in front of the city chambers - have gleaned this from twitter so may be worth double checking...

Robertaquimby · 03/09/2015 12:51

Agent Thanks for the info about the vigil. I won't be able to go but will send dh and the dcs.

I got a very good reply from my MP about this. Shame he doesn't have any power.

Robertaquimby · 03/09/2015 12:53

Itsall So is that a week on Saturday?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/09/2015 12:54

There's now an Edinburgh Sees Syria event as well, also at 2.30 on Sat 12th. It's outside the Scottish Parliament. Candlelit vigil. I'm going. The FB page says 3.5k people are going already.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 04/09/2015 08:03

Oh, and I emailed my MP (Owen Thompson) yesterday and he replied today to say that absolutely we need to be helping and that the 56 will keep the pressure on at Westminster. I was impressed by the speed (and detail!) of the response!

NeededANameChangeAnyway · 04/09/2015 12:41

There are various vigils planned - go on FaceBook and look up XXX Sees Syria - Glasgow Sees Syria, Edinburgh Sees Syria etc. All seem to be on the 12th at around 2.30.

NeededANameChangeAnyway · 04/09/2015 12:42

Oh sorry, I now see other people have said this already....

Behooven · 04/09/2015 12:45

Sorry, I hate these things. Candlelit vigils are just a chance for the 'look at me, how sad I am about these poor people'.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/09/2015 12:59

That's very cynical. I think it's more that people are so angry and so helpless that they want to do something . It is immensely frustrating that Scotland would benefit from these refugees/migrants but its not a devolved matter.

Behooven · 04/09/2015 14:56

I am cynical, I admit it.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/09/2015 14:58

Me too Smile and to an extent I agree with you. But I also think that if it is big enough and is covered by TV etc then it gets opinion out there and maybe starts to sway public and even government opinion just like the Stop the War marches stopped us invading Iraq

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/09/2015 20:40

This page has, and will continue to be updated. Worth keeping an eye on for ways you can help out.

StillFrankie · 05/09/2015 10:57

I'd take part in a protest if its not dominated by SNP supporters waving saltires etc. Because supporters of all parties want to protest.

IWasHereBeforeTheHack · 06/09/2015 17:54

I'm with Behooven: how many of those attending the vigil will also be prepared to take in a refugee / family of refugees?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/09/2015 19:10

Why on earth does this matter? Of course not everyone can afford to take in families, or buy donations. Everyone does what they feel comfortable with, and if that is "just" turning up to show people that there is support for the refugees and that they are welcome, surely that is still a good thing?

BearFoxBear · 06/09/2015 19:32

So, unless you have enough money and/or room to accommodate refugees, you shouldn't show solidarity with them? That's ludicrous. Time and again research shows that it is the poorest members of society who give the most to charity, both in terms of their time and their money. People do what they can, and they should be commended, not criticised.

OOAOML · 08/09/2015 11:45

For people in Edinburgh who don't want to/can't go to the vigil at the parliament, there's a collection in Portobello on Saturday morning for Calais. They have a facebook page (sorry can't link as am at work and can't access facebook here) - Portobello Collection for CalAid Edinburgh with a list of the stuff needed.
