Keeping a cool 'what will be will be' exterior but secretly crapping it for DS' Nat 5 results. He did a reasonable amount of work considering, and is quite chilled about it, but am worried he won't do as well as he thinks and will be upset. By which I mean if course, it will be me who is upset. Would just be nice to get decent enough results to move onto the next year without having to rejig course choices etc.

Will the school see his result today as an abberration, and allow him onto the Higher history course based on his coursework and prelim results, tillie?

Hopefully they will, and whatever blip this was will not affect his Highers - and the university will look at his Highers not today's results. I tend to assume that it is the highest results that count most - so Highers carry more weight than N4s and N5s, and Advanced Highers carry more weight than Highers, and so on.

I don't think this should be the end of his ambition to read history, and I hopemhis school helps him get back on track.

noblegiraffe · 04/08/2015 18:28

I don't know how it works in Scotland but in England if a result was so far from the exepcted grade, especially given the coursework grade, the school would be requesting a remark.

Sometimes really bad mistakes are made in exam marking.

tilliebob · 04/08/2015 18:31

I hope so. I emailed his years DHT about it. DS1 himself thinks he should be able to study history and mods Highers, but obviously being predicted as an A and a D appearing today has totally shattered him. Obviously the school know him well and the last conversation I had with his history teacher was all about which pathways he could opt for when studying history at Uni.

As I say, it's totally flattened him. He's so....deflated it's horrible to see.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/08/2015 18:47

Poor lad - my heart goes out to both of you, tillie - it is shattering when they have worked so hard. Sad

Mrsjayy · 04/08/2015 18:59

Thats a shame poor boy

tilliebob · 04/08/2015 19:02

I remember reading a quote once that "A mother can only ever be as happy as her saddest child" or something similar and that's how I feel. I am just gutted for him.

Mrsjayy · 04/08/2015 19:02

D in the exam disnae make sense because his course work should make up his grade

Mrsjayy · 04/08/2015 19:04

doesn't* I typed what I was thinking Grin

thefirstmrsrochester · 04/08/2015 19:15

tillie I can completely sympathise with you. DD got a D in Biology having got A in the prelim with the highest mark in her year. She worked her arse off for the exam, and felt it went well on the day. Her school are looking to request a remark. We are at a loss to explain it tbh. Gutted for her and to be honest, it's overshadowing what has gone well. I so feel for you and your ds.

tilliebob · 04/08/2015 19:15

Ds1 says 30% essay based 70% exam based.. I lose track of how many percent of what is exam v's coursework for each different subject Confused.

Mrsjayy · 04/08/2015 19:22

I couldnt work it out either dd got a b in her prelim for phsycology and got a no mention in the exam . Oh I hope he can get it worked out

tilliebob · 04/08/2015 19:35

Aww bugger MrsR, that's exactly where we are. I thought the pressure had got to him he's his mothers son alright but since he aced the English as expected, we can't work out what's gone wrong in the history exam.

Mrsjayy · 04/08/2015 19:46

Maybe he got overloaded and his history suffered ?

StaceyAndTracey · 05/08/2015 00:00

Tilly - don't get upset , speak to the school tomorrow and get them to request a clerical check of his paper . Errors do happen . A in prelims and coursework and D in exam is very odd .

Our school is open this Thursday for any pupils to go in and discuss any changes they want to make to their subject choices , aftre their results . Lots of other schools will be doing that too - why don't you phone and check ?

Please try not to get too upset , you need to be strong for him. There is a way forward with this- honest .

nolassie · 05/08/2015 13:01

My son is in a similar situation Tilliebob except it's Modern Studies that's the problem. He's gone from an expected A to no award whatsoever, not even a Nat4 - I thought that was automatic? It's his best subject, he wanted to carry on with it and thought the exam went well. He's in complete shock.

It has been stressed to us throughout the last couple of years that there are now no appeals full stop so I'm interested in people requesting remarks. How are you doing this?

His school won't deal with anybody who isn't having university admission problems.

Mrsjayy · 05/08/2015 13:31

Dd1 failed modern studies dramatically she and her teacher were stunned was the same favourite subject good prelim grade she got a 1 in standard grade a b in prelim

tilliebob · 05/08/2015 13:43

I have a letter from my DS' schools which explains the remarking procedure if you want me to try PMing it to you?

Buddy2go · 05/08/2015 14:06

I'd really appreciate that Tillie.

thefirstmrsrochester · 05/08/2015 14:29

tillie did you manage to get hold of head of year? DDs head of year stated the the heads of departments are looking to take A and B passes into the Highers however DD should stick with her higher biology and see how she gets on in the first unit assessment. He is also going to look at the breakdown of her results on the SQA website and review these with a view to requesting a re-mark.

nolassie and Mrsjayy when the exam result is so markedly different to the prelim and unit assessments surely the school would want to be sure that the papers have been fairly and correctly marked? Last year at dd's school a candidate on track for A in one of the sciences and got an F band. The paper was re-marked and she was subsequently awarded an A.

It's so devastating when they have scored consistently highly, worked hard, and enjoyed their subject only to have a bomb dropped on them.

Brew to all, it's been so stressful.

Iggi999 · 05/08/2015 14:52

No lassie I posted this on your other thread, but a N4 wouldn't appear on the letter/email you got. Schools enter students who don't pass N5 retrospectively, IF they have all the coursework that would lead to a N4 qualification. It sounds highly likely your ds will have that.

tilliebob · 05/08/2015 14:53

Nope, there doesn't seem to be anyone around apart from the main office. They are just taking a list of pupils names Confused. I've also emailed his guidance teacher who I was in touch with during the exams so I'll see if I get any response there. Obviously it's still the holidays so no one has to be in school. However as a teacher I can access my emails from home and emailed them via my school account too. DS1 is a little bit less shell shocked today once he finally got up

toddlersareeasier · 05/08/2015 14:58

Did he answer the question correctly?

In one of my DS' history prelims (old higher) he rushed and misread the question. I can't remember what exactly he did- I think maybe 'before' instead of 'after' or something like that.

busjs79 · 05/08/2015 15:00

One thing that slightly concerns me tillie is that the coursework (which is as you suggested worth 30%) is very definitely externally marked - so you shouldn't know what mark he had received for that element of the course - perhaps a teacher has made an estimate, but it would be just that, I'm afraid. He must be feeling awful though and all I can suggest is that you request a review of marking - they will look at his script and perhaps the marker missed a page, for example. Sounds awful but it does happen, unfortunately. Surprised there are no staff in school to advise (every school I've ever taught in ALWAYS has a contingent of guidance/pastoral/management team in to help with queries like this and possible recoursing. One thing that may help him - I've previously accepted a student in a very similar situation into my Higher class (and know others who have also done so) based on my knowledge of that individual student and they've gone on to succeed at Higher level, so all is not lost!

tilliebob · 05/08/2015 15:15

Yes, I was talking to DH and we were saying that the school know DS, and that he's had nothing less than a A throughout the entire 2 year course Confused. He's getting to crash Mods higher based on his English (which he aced, as expected, but we also expected that with history...), so if they will let him do that Higher, I can't see why he can't do the History higher, at least initially to see how he does. He's done a month already before summer and was loving it. My head is pounding with stress/tension Hmm

tilliebob · 05/08/2015 15:18

For coursework I mean the work he's done in class over the past two years, not the work that's sent away. I can only think he missed an entire question or mis read something, as a PP said.
