Hi just wondering if I can have any advise I have a little boy who's just turned 5 due to go into year 1, I am going on holiday in August and won't be back till the 7th of September, this holiday was booked as a surprise and I had no input in the dates. My son is due to start year 1 on the 3rd of September meaning he will miss 4 days but the 2nd of September is a inset day so ino this will be classed as 5 days an I could get fined. Its my first time doing this but I just wanted the best way to go about it and any advise, I was going to ring the school tomorrow to let them know as I don't want them thinking he just hasn't turned up, but not really sure what to do and say. If anyone could advise me on this that's would be great thanks.

so if you haven’t read it (the bit pertaining to fines is a couple of pages), why post what you convey to be the facts of the situation, when they are patently… wrong?

Look, I was just trying to help the poster. I’ve recently had guidance from my daughter’s school on this and found a government blog link and as far as I can see neither mention inset days. These have never counted previously and this change wasn’t highlighted in either thing I read and logically they shouldn’t count so I mistakenly said they wouldn’t count. I acknowledge this was incorrect. All my posts since then have been saying how bizarre it is to fine parents for not sending their kids to school on a day school is closed, not claiming that I am correct in what I originally said.

I’m bowing out now; I still think it odd (don’t you?!) but it is the law (starting in August, for how long who knows) and hopefully the discussion has highlighted to some parents that they may be fined for being on holiday on a day their children aren’t required at school.

So if I took my child out out school for a holiday mid wk I'd be okay as she won't miss 10 sessions (5 days)? Also it doesn't say it has to be 5 consecutive days so I should be ok say go Wednesday come back Wednesday.
Also the fine is only £80 if you are a single parent. Couples get fined each according to the wording.

That is consecutive school days unfortunately, the weekend doesn't class as a break in the absence.
DC's father would also get a fine if he is involved/on school records etc.
we had to guarantee to pay both parts of the fine to DSC's mum when we took them out last time.
