Hi just wondering if I can have any advise I have a little boy who's just turned 5 due to go into year 1, I am going on holiday in August and won't be back till the 7th of September, this holiday was booked as a surprise and I had no input in the dates. My son is due to start year 1 on the 3rd of September meaning he will miss 4 days but the 2nd of September is a inset day so ino this will be classed as 5 days an I could get fined. Its my first time doing this but I just wanted the best way to go about it and any advise, I was going to ring the school tomorrow to let them know as I don't want them thinking he just hasn't turned up, but not really sure what to do and say. If anyone could advise me on this that's would be great thanks.

Just send them a quick email telling them the 4 days he is away and asking them if they need you to complete an my paperwork. Say that you know it is unauthorised and it won't happen again. It will be fine

SueSheeMee · 18/07/2024 20:25

I work in school attendance. Just tell them the truth and certainly in my school, you would avoid a Penalty Notice for this absence at 8 sessions, but do read up on the new rules coming in for the new academic year in England (maybe other UK countries but I don't know that). Multiple holidays will result in prosecution and a criminal record. I don't think enough people understand that this is coming.

I regret even asking, people just like to judge other people. Acting like school is the be all and end all. He will be fine because he knows littlery every kid in his class I've stated.

I can already tell what kind of parent you are.

You'll be paying fines. Not on this occasion, but I can tell there'll be others.

Good luck to your son.

Typo. Doh!

The first few days at 5 years old cannot be that important in the grand scheme because know that many schools apply staggered start dates for reception, my oldest didn’t start until 18th Sept the year they decided to stagger it over several weeks. My second started on the Thursday of the first week, with other children starting earlier that week and into the next. Absolute pain in the arse for working parents.

I really wouldn’t worry as long as you’re not planning on any other absences for the rest of the year.

Hotgirlwinter · 18/07/2024 20:37

Honestly people on this thread are utterly ridiculous.

OP just take your holiday, no point asking on here, consult Google for the official policy and don’t take anymore leave in the year.

People just come on these types of threads to be arseholes, sad lives they must have

Sarahpennoxx · 18/07/2024 20:38

My son is always on time and in every day of the year and is succeeding in every subject. You don't know me or the type of parent I am. I can tell what type of person you are though.

Oh god he's tiny, go on your holiday and enjoy it! He won't remember missing a few days off school 😂😂 people are wild on here.

I know I've been judged life right and center. Like they even know the parent I am, he's never off school and always on time.

Have a fabulous holiday OP

Your son won't suffer for a few days off school especially as he already knows his classmates!
We've always taken ours out for holidays... predicted all 9's for gcse so clearly no harm done!

Thank you!! Really I think people just love to judge others like they r perfect people. What is 4 days of school really I would understand if he didn't know anyone, but all the children know eachother in school and out.🙈🙈

Well personally, I’d email and say he has D&V on the first day, say he still has diahorrea on the 2nd and 3rd days and that you’ll then wait the 48 hours and he’ll come in.

On the other hand, booking this holiday without checking with you was a very silly thing to do.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/07/2024 20:50

They fine 10 sessions which is 5 days am and pm register

He is missing 4 days so won't be fined

Tho not great he is missing the first week of school but you can blame who booked it

I really don't think it would be fair to your son to miss those days, it's incredible how quickly the find friends and fall into a routine. For the sake of a few days, he's going to be the new boy for months.

It’s year 1, he’ll already have friends from reception.

Illbeready · 18/07/2024 20:51

Don't worry about the fine it doesn't mean anything. I've been fined most years for taking my kids out for a week. Currently waiting for a fine from last month. Go enjoy your holiday

Yes.

Hence why I edited. 🤷‍♀️

Drizzlethru · 18/07/2024 20:51

Hope you have a nice holiday. If you are fined, then will need to pay in 21 days or it is doubled. Main issue is if there is another holiday within 3 years is it is double the fine. So might be worth telling all family members not to book holidays in term time moving forward,

Its going up.

It'll be per parent per child.

And doubles per parent per child for a 2nd holiday in a rolling 3 yr period

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/07/2024 20:55

Fwiw I've been fined 3 times £60per person so both parents get fined

We take out week before hf in May and did in R 1 & 2

Had a note saying we might be fined £2.5k if so again as been 3 times in 3 years

So next yeah May have to do aug

If planes didn't put up their flights so much in holidays then we wouldn't do it

Mini blondes is never off ill

Many in her class have been off for s&d or colds or temps or just because
So I don't think taking 5 days off is terrible when some are off 20 days over the heat

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 18/07/2024 21:03

It will be fine of course.
Even if he didn't know anyone the first few days are just that...the first few days. They are five. By half term seating plans and group learning will probably be tweaked .

Strictlymad · 18/07/2024 21:34

Far too much hand wringing over 4 days where they will do barely anything constructive. Yes you wouldn’t choose those dates but it’s done and your done I’ll get much more value from the trip to Egypt, he will pickup at school absolutely no issue. He’s 5 not in the middle of gcses!

Pipecleanerrevival · 18/07/2024 20:14

Omg the drama over missing a few days of school is ridiculous. Go enjoy your holiday OP, your kid will be fine, just like the thousands of others that miss the first few days of term for whatever reason.

I agree! These posters are being ridiculous. Your son will be fine, he's 5 and is having a week off! New children join the school throughout the year and make new friends and settle in fine. Enjoy your holiday.

bubbletubble · 18/07/2024 21:40

This place is such a cesspit sometimes. OP asked a reasonable question and now her and her lovely dad who booked a holiday gets flamed. Enjoy your holiday OP.

cunningartificer · 18/07/2024 21:52

A shame about the timing but it's not going to cause long term damage to his education. He's five, not in the middle of his GCSEs ! Going on holiday with a loving grandparent will do him nothing but good. Crazy over reactions on this thread and I'm not someone who likes people taking children out of school. I hope you have a lovely break.

bloomin heck you’re being a touch hyperbolic there

i see posts saying the op should cancel because will cause stress to her son.

Idont see abuse cess-pitty flaming responses?
