Very secluded house for 700k ish?

Name changed.

Where in the UK, ideally England or Wales, can we move to for about 700k, where we can get a detached house/bungalow with no near neighbours on a no through road or a very quiet one?

We're used to living rurally so driving on single track roads, farming activity and smells and being miles from shops etc. is fine. No children at home so schools aren't a concern. We love hiking and do a lot of it where we live now. We want to have a cat again so no busy roads. I would also like to be within 15 miles of somewhere large enough to have a book club and/or a yoga class but it's not vital.

I'm fairly sure we can't get what we want here (Hampshire) but Isle of Wight is a possibility (we have family there, and visit often) although a lot of what I see there even at 750k has a small plot size with other houses much too close.

Otherwise I think we might have to go north or to Wales to get that sort of seclusion at that budget but the weather is putting me off a bit.

Please could you suggest some good areas, that you know well? We won't be ready to move until next year as we need to do some work on the house to make it sellable, so please don't go to the trouble of posting Rightmove links unless you really want to.

Thanks in advance.

You need Herefordshire - UK's second least populated county. Lots of lovely places for hiking and you're never more than 15m from a dozen book clubs (Hay, Abergavenny, Hereford, Ludlow, Ledbury, Malvern etc).

There's loads of detached, no-through-road rural homes on Rightmove at that price.

Shropshire. Very rural with the most beautiful walks in the UK.

Would you consider Ireland ?

Somerset, even!!

Oh that's near me! My house overlooks it!

I'm joking about overlooking it BTW but I do live in Frome which is a couple of miles away.

One answer, as some links suggest, is Northern Ireland. When I visit relatives (West of the Bann) I always ask myself 'where are the neighbours?' and think 'so much space'. Same goes for those further on in Donegal, but you have crossed a border into kph. Oil heating of course.

Wow! Food for thought.

@FKAT I do really like Herefordshire so that's definitely a consideration, if we can find somewhere that won't flood. That's very helpful to know about book clubs and hiking.

@3luckystars Unfortunately both of us have to work in the UK, it's a requirement of our jobs. I love Ireland and we have considered retiring over there but it's probably not for us at this stage in our lives.

@WeAreAllBucked thanks for the Northern Ireland links. We've never been but are considering visiting there after a friend recommended it and I can see from your links that we could get a really decent house for a lot less. The Cherry Tree Lane house with all that wood in it is beautiful.

I am desperate to get away from annoying neighbour noise and this is really helping me to see what is possible. Thank you all so much.

This is definitely possible in rural mid Suffolk.

CandelabraCat · 06/05/2025 21:26

The vast majority of the country.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/05/2025 07:32

Holmfirth area
Hebden Bridge area (beware of flood zones)

For 700k you can move pretty much anywhere rurally in the UK. People throwing out random place names has no benefit whatsoever. This is a pointless goady post to say “I’ve got 700k”. Allegedly.
