Yorkshire geography help!

We're looking at moving soon and DH new job is in Northallerton, I have family in Sheffield and need to be close to a hospital as I'm a nurse. I really don't want to be far from my family as we are close BUT I also don't want DH to have a huge commute.

We would like somewhere quiet, rural or semi rural. Our budget would be flexible for our forever home. We have 4 children so schools are quite important, and we both drive so public transport isn't a issue.

I have now looked at Google maps, right move and visited properties and areas that I'm feeling rather overwhelmed by it all.

So, if anyone is familiar with Yorkshire geography would you mind sharing some ideas with me please?

Hi. Have you looked at Wetherby. It is about 35 mins to Northalllerton and just over an hour to Sheffield. It is very close to A1/M so transport links are great. Near to York,Harrogate and Leeds for hospitals. Lovely market town, with plenty of villages/countryside near by. I love it!

Thank you for all the really brilliant suggestions!

Can you move jobs, op?

ethelredonagoodday · 22/04/2024 21:01

I work in Northallerton (or I did pre Covid) and live in York. York to Sheffield is about an hours drive, maybe slightly more. York to Northallerton is about 45 mins by car and there's trains too as it's on the east coast main line.

Lots of villages around York that might fit the bill?

mdinbc · 22/04/2024 21:08

Since your DH has a job in Northallerton, and there is a hospital there, why don't you just move there? There is something to be said about living close to work. I'm five minutes from home, and can ride my bike when the weather is good. It makes it a whole lot easier with children's after school activities as well.

Therealhelenskelton · 23/04/2024 07:37

I think Northallerton or York might be it
It's just because as I do shifts, and both my sister and I have children, I'd have liked to have been closer to her in Sheffield to pop down, etc, between the odd school run.

Northallerton is a long way from Sheffield and nothing is going to change that OP!

CormorantStrikesBack · 23/04/2024 07:49

You need to prioritise dh’s daily commute and your job possibilities. Think about where you would want to work. You could live somewhere like Ripon and possibly look for work in Leeds. thirsk is another possibility and look for work in York. James cook is a big hospital but it’s the wrong side of Northallerton so I’d focus my job search on hospitals to the south and live inbetween.

You’re then the right side of Northallerton for trips to Sheffield. But realistically it’s going to be a day trip at a weekend to Sheffield rather than popping round for coffee.

Remember you can always meet in the middle too OP. You may be 90 mins from Sheffield, but if you both head towards each other, that's 45 mins.

TheValueOfEverything · 23/04/2024 08:39

OP if this is your forever home, I would also consider how “forever” (long-term) the other family needs are.

  • is DH’s job always likely to be Northallerton, until he retires? Or maybe he’ll change job - potentially to a closer location. Perhaps a longer commute for a few years with longer term plan of working closer to where you are putting down roots gives more options?
  • will your family always be in Sheffield? Any chance they might move?
  • the place your four children go to school is likely where they’ll put roots down, come back to as adults and potentially live. Make sure it works for retirement too as once your kids are attached to it you’ll always have some sort of connection.
  • if in future you need / want to support elderly parents, does it make sense to be closer?
  • huge added value of living in walking distance to family and friends. It’s hard to build new friendships and communities in a new place midway through life - completely possible and many do, but does take extra leaning in!

Which side of Sheffield are your family on?

South, which is typical!

Hello everyone,🤗

I am willing to move from Solihull to Scunthorpe,I work from home, I need to buy a nice medium house there, I am a mum of three kids the youngest is 11, I would like to know more about Scunthorpe,Where are the good Secondary schools and which areas are cheapest and also safe and family friendly. 🙂
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend Xx

Op I commuted from Selby to Sheffield for a year and it was hideous. The A1 is crap on that stretch. I did use the train a lot but drove sometimes and it's just miserable.

Northallerton on the other hand is lovely. Nice town, great links to everywhere else too, and as others have said, commutable to a couple of hospitals. If you wanted to meet up with your sister, Leeds would only be 50 mins direct for each of you on the train. Northallerton to Sheffield is a long way....

OrangeAurora · 04/05/2024 14:26

We are in south-west Sheffield with family in North Yorkshire and York. I would definitely move closer to where your husband's job is as the traffic around York in particular can be awful! This area of Sheffield, near the hospitals and Universities, is also often gridlocked at peak times.

As PPs have said Northallerton is a long way from Sheffield (83 miles from us!) and there's nothing you can do to change that. The daily commute is what needs to be prioritised otherwise you'll end up being miserable.

We often compromise and meet family halfway at the weekends and we never have to do overnight trips anymore, which is a godsend.

My hubby and I are seriously looking at moving to NorthYorkshire with reasonable access to the coast , we would like a wee bit of land as want to breed Alpacas and have a small holding so a non estate position.

My husband is a senior manager in Construction and I’m a retired Midwife . Main concerns are not being too isolated , having good GP’s and some nice independent shops to mooch around in and lovely walks for our dogs . Biggest problem is my brother ,he feels I will be too isolated ( he is in North London) although we live in Cambridgeshire I don’t see him more than 5-6 times a year . We don’t have a mortgage and our budget is probably around £600k would be very grateful for any advice.

Tallisker · 21/11/2024 17:17

@Alex104qanat Malton and environs would probably meet all your expectations except for your budget!

24 mins in the train to York which is then on the fast East Coast Main Line to London.

Loads of independent shops, great food, gorgeous countryside, not far from Whitby and Scarborough.

Autumn1990 · 21/11/2024 18:42

You’ll be very lucky to get something with land for £600k as that will only get upto an acre or two. For something with a few acres and outbuildings it’s more like £750- to £999k
its a bit cheaper on the northern edge of the north York moors but the nearest towns are guisborough and Whitby and the secondary schools aren’t great.
East Yorkshire is a bit cheaper as well but not much and back to the school problems.
Sometimes a bargain comes up but you’ll need to be ready to proceed and ideally be a cash buyer as they go quick.
