Yorkshire geography help!

We're looking at moving soon and DH new job is in Northallerton, I have family in Sheffield and need to be close to a hospital as I'm a nurse. I really don't want to be far from my family as we are close BUT I also don't want DH to have a huge commute.

We would like somewhere quiet, rural or semi rural. Our budget would be flexible for our forever home. We have 4 children so schools are quite important, and we both drive so public transport isn't a issue.

I have now looked at Google maps, right move and visited properties and areas that I'm feeling rather overwhelmed by it all.

So, if anyone is familiar with Yorkshire geography would you mind sharing some ideas with me please?

Northallerton has a small hospital. York, James Cook and north Tees are the big hospitals covering that area maybe Darlington hospital depending on what your specialty is.
If you’re closer to the A1 the journey to Sheffield will be much faster
Somewhere like Kirby fleetham
If you want to work at York hospital, somewhere round easing would which has a very good secondary school.

Easingwold.

Therealhelenskelton · 22/04/2024 14:41

Thank you thats great! I hadn't put those on the list

Yarm is a nice village and has good schools you would then be close to North Tees or James Cook hospitals. It would be around a 30 minute commute for dh.

It's whether it's too far from Sheffield?

I think I'd be looking at somewhere close to the A1(M) on a level with York. Easingwold is a good shout.

Therealhelenskelton · 22/04/2024 16:06

These all look lovely but are quite far from Sheffield

How long/ far does your husband want to commute and how close do you want to be to Sheffield? I’m 40 mins from A1 (get on at york) and can get to Doncaster/Sheffield in less than an hour and a half.
Being near york and you working in york hospital and your husband commuting to Northallerton is probably the best compromise you’ll get.

BrieHugger · 22/04/2024 16:19

I’d look at Thirsk, Ripon, York, Harrogate. All nice places to live and all near the A1 so you can scoot south easily!

LenaLamont · 22/04/2024 16:26

You can't make Northallerton any closer to Sheffield, OP, so I think accepting a commute on the A1 for 60-90 minutes to see family is inevitable. Within that, there are lots of possibilites between York and Northallerton.

Would somewhere like Boroughbridge fit the bill?

Meant A1 and A19

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 22/04/2024 16:43

OP, Sheffield is at the bottom of South Yorkshire, and Northallerton is in the middle of North Yorkshire.

There is significant mileage between the two.

The commute into the York area can be quite busy as there is no motorway. Only the A63, A64, and A19 are in those areas.

For me, prioritising being close to work would be the logical choice.

Therealhelenskelton · 22/04/2024 17:20

Ahh yes, I've just had another look and these are great ideas and where I was looking originally.

I think, I just wish, they were closer together but I can't magic that one!

I think you need to consider daily needs over visiting family otherwise you will be too knackered from commuting to want to see anyone at the weekends. As incog says you can't change where your Dh's job is or where your family live and there is quite a distance between them.

I live in Leeds. Looking at google maps it is an 1hr 10ish from Leeds to Northallerton so I would look half way between the two for living. Leeds has Leeds General Infirmary and St James hospitals alongside private ones and other clinics etc for your job. I am not going to lie commuting into Leeds is always going to be busy but the same can be said of York or Harrogate. It is just busy with traffic. Shift work might make a difference to commute times. We chose Leeds due to motorway links for M1 and M62.

Visiting family would probably put you at 1hr 30 but the A1/M1 would be straight down. It is an easy day trip, this is how far our friends live from us ad we take turns to see them, them to us or us to them.

I think this is spot on. Yorkshire is massive! If your husbands commute is going to be decent you’re probably not going to be super close to your family.

Doodgreen12 · 22/04/2024 18:02

I now live in Thirsk and my best friend is in Sheffield - 90 minute trip- which to us is great as we used to live 5 hours apart! It’s a lovely part of the country and easy routes to everywhere!

I needed that as currently we are 5+ hours away from family so it does put it in perspective

The roadworks between Doncaster and Ferrybridge won't end soon... I wouldn't go any further than Leeds for a commute to Northallerton. And put up with it to see family in Sheffield (or work out if the M1 or A1 roadworks were less annoying!!!)

I've lived in Thirsk and Richmond, both nice enough, but the hospital was Northallerton.

According to google it’s 1 hr 40mins to Sheffield.

PickAChew · 22/04/2024 18:22

Agree with others. No way would I want to fight my way round York every day for work. Stick with north of York and close to the A1 or A19.

PenelopeTheShroudWeaver · 22/04/2024 18:28

In or around Darlington means you can easily drive to James Cook or North Tees hospitals, and you're on the A1.
Alternatively you can get direct trains to Sheffield from there as well

You won't be close to Sheffield, you can't shrink the distance, but you will benefit from good transport links in that area.

It's also handy for York, Newcastle, the Yorkshire coast etc. and house prices are still reasonable

Tallisker · 22/04/2024 18:29

And Thirsk gets yarn-bombed 🥰 It's also on the East Coast main line (as is Northallerton) so commuting by train is possible, if expensive.

VerityUnreasonble · 22/04/2024 18:35

If you looked somewhere around Wetherby that would probably be a 40-45 minute commute to Northallerton depending on traffic but would give you options for big hospitals in Leeds / York /Wakefield at a similar sort of commute I'd have thought (around 40 minutes). Around an hour to Sheffield if not rush hour.

Ripon doesn’t have a railway station
