Moving to Alderley Edge?

LimpBiskit · 18/06/2022 13:08

I'm thinking about moving to Alderley Edge. I've worked in Macclesfield for several years and regularly pass through and have been out in the evening several times but I want to know what it's like to live there. Is there anyone who is living there and is willing to offer some insider info? I currently live in Saddleworth so the move will reduce my commute but I'm also thinking about retiring in the next 5-10yrs so this would likely be my last move. I'm late 40s so I'd like to know if it has enough about it to keep me occupied from now until I die🤣.

There’s loads of walking, the bars and cafes are nice and you can get the train to Manchester etc. It’s ridiculously expensive for housing though! Also the weekends can be quite annoying and loud with all the super cars driving through.

SwedishEdith · 18/06/2022 13:12

Actual Alderley Edge is not rural. It's very WAGgy. Even just driving through, you'll spot a lot of surgical amended faces. Were you thinking of a particular town/village?

Summerbreeze111 · 18/06/2022 13:13

What is your budget? It's a lovely area, small centre, quite lively in the evening but you don't get much for your money as its one of the most affluent areas in NW. Some parts are better than others. I dont live there myself but I have family that do!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 18/06/2022 13:17

I don't live there but love to visit and go for walks or a mooch around the posh(er) shops. I don't know if its really 'rural' though.

LimpBiskit · 18/06/2022 13:23

The house I'm currently looking at is out of the centre just off Macclesfield Rd and is pretty rural. I'm aware of the WAG reputation but I've never noticed during the times I've been there. Maybe I need to spend a bit of time over the next few weeks taking it all in.
@Duvetdweller Agree that the housing is silly money! I thought it was bad near me but this is another level! I've never understood the desire to own supercars. They are uncomfortable, noisy and sometimes just impossible to drive on certain roads. Each to their own though.

Lovely area if you can afford it (although I wouldn't really call it rural, but depends where you're coming from).

There'd be enough for me on the high street day to day- coffee shops, bars, pubs, supermarket, etc, with very very easy / quick access into Manchester when you want more. You could also look at Wilmslow.

Lots of WAG types around, but also just lots of others living their lives, albeit with a healthier income than most.

LimpBiskit · 18/06/2022 13:27

@Summerbreeze111 I've a seven figure budget but that doesn't get you much for the money!

If you’ve got the budget go for it, it’s a really friendly place I think. There’s loads of yoga and barre core if you’re into that and the chippy is great so what’s not to like?!

whirlyhead · 18/06/2022 13:39

I live close to alderley edge in an area just as expensive, but never go to Alderley. I just find it really uninteresting and full of pretentious people. The restaurants aren’t that good either and a lot of the houses are hideous MCMansions.

I'm a bit of a foodie so I'm sold on the chippy🤣.

I've had a quick look at Prestbury but it didn't look like there was as much going on in the village. I'm quite keen that there's a fair bit within a walkable radius. The current village I'm in is a bit thin on the ground with eateries and entertainment so I've been looking for something a little livelier but still with a village feel. Any suggestions?

My parents grew up in Prestbury and Langley and I still have family around Macclesfield. I've always lived near London but really like both places.

Prestbury has a bit more going on but a bit footballer-y. Langley is very charming and I love walking around Teggs' Nose but not a lot in terms of shops and probably more limited in terms of million pound plus houses.

I went through Macclesfield on the train last week and it brought back lots of happy memories. There's some lovely countryside around there.

Duvetdweller · 18/06/2022 13:55

I think Prestbury has an older population and not as much going on. Given you have a healthy budget I think Alderley or Wilmslow would fit the bill. Also Bramhall - that’s got a nice village feel and transport links.

Glitterspy · 18/06/2022 14:01

My husband lived there a few years ago.

Its the kind of place everyone gets ridiculously dressed up for a beer in the evening, does loads of coke and talks shit about how rich they are all night. All the bars are full of this.

Every few minutes someone will drive past the bar in a fancy car (Lambo, Maclaren, the place is stuffed with them) and everyone stops and looks with full admiration and no shred of irony. Nobody cares about anything other than how rich they look.

The women are wall to wall common as muck, trowel-thick makeup, fake hair/tits/nails/teeth, alllll the fillers.

The accent is grating, everyone sounds awful with a kind of halfway Liverpool/Mancunian/trying to sound posh twang.

There’s an excellent bakery (or was) called Weinholt’s that makes moving there totally worth it!!

Thats the under 40s. Older than that and they play bridge, tennis and golf and are keen supporters of the allotments and local events. Probably still have blonde highlights though. Grin

Mostly in jest, but it's a nice place. The cricket club is very friendly, and runs a really nice bonfire event every year. Agree about Weinholt's too, I'd highly recommend trying a Schlossberg.

HidingFromDD · 18/06/2022 14:10

i don’t like going out there as it’s very pretentious, caveat that’s I’ve not been there since a few years pre-covid, but full of wags. Got chatted up by someone who’s line was ‘I’ve got a million pound house and 30 acres, fancy coming back for a shag’ which is pretty much indicative of most of the people I met (v rarely went there for obvious reasons)

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 18/06/2022 14:20

There are some flashy people there — own businesses, footballers etc. Probably newer money in general than Prestbury.

It's a nice village though, and there are plenty of lovely walks about (the Edge for a start) and easy to get to other places from.

That can't still be there?! My very snobby grandmother refused to lower herself to cook so Boxing Day lunch was always a rather sickly selection of massive Weinholt cream cakes.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 18/06/2022 14:25

Still there, yes! I

blue421 · 18/06/2022 14:26

That's hilarious. And surely asking for a put down about only screwing people with at least 100 acres for a one night stand.

Glitterspy · 18/06/2022 14:32

Sounds like someone I met there too, hahaha!

What wouldn’t I give for a Weinholt’s tomato tart, though. Champagne hangover sorted!!

hamstersarse · 18/06/2022 14:33

It’s a strange place imo.

I want to like it because it looks so good but the vibe isn’t that genuinely friendly. There’s something very fake about it.

And the muscle car parade for the plebs every weekend is beyond odd.

I prefer Macclesfield itself, or poynton, even Wilmslow.

OldWivesTale · 18/06/2022 14:38

Full of pretentious wankers imo. Think Cheshire Housewives type women. It depends what you're into.

whirlyhead · 18/06/2022 17:30

Cheshire Housewives is filmed where I live. The shame…!!

SwedishEdith · 18/06/2022 19:19

How many bedrooms etc do you need? I agree that Poynton or Macclesfield would be preferable.
