House names- inspiration needed!

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for your opinions please on house names. We have nearly finished renovating our property which is called The Bungalow. It will need a new name as it now has a first floor! We are really struggling to think of something.

We are lucky that we quite rural, lots of greenery and we often have Red Kites flying overhead. We are also surrounded by fields, where we often see pheasants & hares.

We need to submit 3 possible names to the council, so far I have -

Kites View
The Leveretts
Pheasants Nye.

What do people think??

I like the Leveretts, but I think you'll be forever spelling it out!

Thanks in advance

Going to sound like a ghastly pedant here, but why does “Leveretts” have two Ts in it? A junior hare is a leveret with one T.

And, don’t you need an apostrophe to make it Kite’s View or Kites’ View. And a Nye is a flock of pheasants, so not sure what “Pheasants Nye” means….flock of pheasants’ pheasants?

Isn’t a young hare a leveret? No double T. That’s the best option. The other two need an apostrophe. Without, they grate on me.
Or you could maybe have Kite View or The Nye.

Cross posted with @MadeInChorley , who said it better than I did!

The Bungalow. It will need a new name as it now has a first floor!

Keep the name as it is cos it's funny.

How about checking the current or old ordnance survey maps for the area and seeing if there are any local landmarks you can name the house after? You might find that your house was built on a field that had a name, e.g Longmeadow, or the local hill behind you has a name on the map, or if you check old census that the original owner of the house had a surname or first name that works ‘Tom’s Cottage’ for instance.

I think The Nye is best.

Hello

I wish my house had a number !
Go for something easy to spell and get a good sign that people can see whatever you choose

I know a house called Tuksumdoin
Maybe :
The House Formerly Known As Bungalow.
Didn't do Prince any harm having a similar name at one point!!

Didn't realise the council has to approve. I guess my council don't care as my new build neighbours have a very chavvy sounding house name that is out of sync with the rest of the houses.
Mine is named after the farm it was once part of (already named when we moved here).

Just make sure the name isn't similar to any of your neighbor's house names. We've been there and it's a nightmare.

I came across a Thistledome in Yorkshire once - “this’ll do me”.

I agree that you should look at old maps for some inspiration.
You were in a bungalow, are you a cottage, lodge etc now?
Any physical features nearby, a hill or stream perhaps? You could use Pheasant Rise or Kite Ghyll.
Down Cottage, Drove Lodge, Warren House (all linked to hares)

I would google them and see how many other properties appear with the same name. I agree taking inspiration from old maps is a good idea.

According to the RSPB the scientific name for red kite is 'Milvus milvus' ....

Do you have pheasants, kites and hares around you? Bit odd if not.

Kite House?

Yes, it’s in the opening post.

Red Kite Cottage sounds nice, and there probably isn't another one near you. Easy to spell.

Pheasants anything sounds like it's going to be that tongue twister about a pheasant plucker.

Leveret Lodge? Leveret Cottage? The Leverets would make me surprised when you answered the door and were sadly lacking in long ears and bounce (I'm making an assumption here).

Or Poacher's Rest given it sounds like it'd be ideally situated.

@MadeInChorley, thank you for coming back to me, it's good to be a pedant! I have seen it with 2 tts, and 1, but I have checked again and you are right. Thank you for stopping me spelling it completely wrong!
