Lettings agents warned me about loud neighbours

We have been looking for a new property to rent for quite a while now. It's not easy because we have a dog, I am pregnant, can't attend normal viewings because we live far from the area we want to live in and because car rides make me very sick due to my pregnancy.

We found a house we like but before sending us the application form, the lettings agents said they have to warn me about our potential neighbours. Apparently they've had several noise complaints, mostly shouting and loud music too.

I would normally think it's not worth applying for but because we've been struggling to find something and not many agencies want to send us videos, we feel like this could be the only option for us.

What would you do?

Absolutely no way for me, it could well make your life a misery

blindmansbluff · 05/10/2020 17:55

No way. If it's bad enough they feel they have to prewarn you it must be REALLY bad.

Coriandersucks · 05/10/2020 17:56

Not a chance! I would make any compromise necessary to avoid noisy neighbours.

unmarkedbythat · 05/10/2020 17:57

Given that most letting agents will tell you everything and anything they can to get you to apply for a property, either this one is wonderful and they agent is trying to put you off so they can swipe it themselves (unlikely!) or it is really, really bad.

Bedsheets4knickers · 05/10/2020 17:57

If they are warning you I'd stay well away .
With a new baby you will not want that .

Thisisnotnormal69 · 05/10/2020 17:58

Are they obliged to tell prospective tenants if there have been official complaints made through local authority etc, I wonder? I’m not sure. Otherwise I’m not sure what’s motivating them as they’re not usually so selfless!

Aquamarine1029 · 05/10/2020 17:59

If the letting agents had to warn you, it's bad. They have basically told you you will have nightmare neighbours. I wouldn't even consider renting that home.

Emelene · 05/10/2020 18:00

No I think very noisy neighbours could make life really really miserable for you. I wouldn't risk it myself...

ShalomToYouJackie · 05/10/2020 18:01

Definitely not, especially if you're about to have a baby

silentpool · 05/10/2020 18:03

Are letting agents legally obligated to tell you? That's really interesting as I've just had a tough year with a mentally ill downstairs neighbour (a lot of noise, police attendance etc). If I were you, I would not do this. If I'd known about my current situation, I would have steered well clear. Peace and quiet is NOT overrated, trust me.

Longwhiskers14 · 05/10/2020 18:11

I have never heard of a lettings agency willingly warn about noisy neighbours! You would be insane to rent it knowing that.

VettiyaIruken · 05/10/2020 18:13

I wouldn't touch it.
Whatever they've told you, times it by 100 for the truth.

MadisonMontgomery · 05/10/2020 18:14

If a letting agency actually tells you this instead of pretending everything is perfect, I would assume it is unbearable!

MyCassiopiea · 05/10/2020 18:16

Don't even consider moving there.

Lollypop4 · 05/10/2020 18:16

Do not go for it!!!!
We have the worst neighbours , they wake us nearly nightly , early hours ect..., not even loud music- shouting and screaming at each other 3x children 2x adults, their dog constantly barks as left outside for an hr a time.
Its awful!!

KindKylie · 05/10/2020 18:18

Absolutely not - there's nothing for them to gain from warning you so just be grateful and heed their warning.

ShellsAndSunrises · 05/10/2020 18:19

No. There is a reason that they’ve told you. You’ll have a newborn and the neighbours from hell who will keep it awake.

I appreciate that finding somewhere is proving really tough, but this isn’t the place.

krustykittens · 05/10/2020 18:28

Don't do it, it sounds like they will make your life hell!

RepeatSwan · 05/10/2020 18:29

Nooooooooooooo walk away and be grateful you were warned!

movingonup20 · 05/10/2020 18:34

How far away is the house? Adjoined? across the drive? What's your attitude to noise? I don't notice music, traffic, sirens etc because I'm a city girl whereas dp thinks it's noisy here.

They could be the neighbours from hell, or it could be the previous occupants were completely intolerant of normal family life and moaned continuously. With a young baby and a dog you are unlikely to be silent yourselves but loud music wouldn't be good. I would get further information before writing it off

Rae36 · 05/10/2020 18:38

I would rent it for a very short time to help me get settled in the area if I wanted to live there badly enough, but I would want to pay a much cheaper rent.
And I agree with others, it's a weird thing for them to be telling you. Surely they want the rental income, why are they warning people off? It's nice of them, but weird.

catnoir1 · 05/10/2020 18:49

If they're warning you then it's awful and they've lost lots of tenants to the neighbour. Do not move into this property. Having a newborn is hard enough without noise complaints.

Blueuggboots · 05/10/2020 19:23

I wouldn't even consider it. I've lived next door to really loud neighbours and it was miserable.

Burnthurst187 · 09/11/2020 13:11

Good lord no, why would you want riff raff nearby

mumwon · 09/11/2020 13:36

hmm
you have a dog - you are having a baby
I wonder...
Estate Agents being honest or considerate to you....
