Where in Surrey?

Hi mums,

I live in South London at the moment and am considering a move to Surrey.

I'm looking for a (preferably detached) 4 bed property up to £850k

Ideally want somewhere within a half mile to fast train to London, Wimbledon or a main station.

Would love to get a cafe/restaurant culture on my doorstep and some decent little shops.

Is there anywhere that matches my needs?! Or do I need a bigger budget?

I am in exactly the same boat! Need to move from Wimbledon for a bigger house but just no idea where! Need good commute, nice town and good schools too....hmmm.

ShirleyPhallus · 31/10/2018 13:47

Same here! Placemarking!

letsdolunch321 · 31/10/2018 13:53

Uckfield
Sharpthorne
Edenbridge
Sussex areas

DollyWilde · 31/10/2018 13:54

I grew up in Guildford - how about Farnham or Godalming? Or too long a commute?

sickmumma · 31/10/2018 14:16

Surbiton matches exactly- lovely high street with lots of coffee shops, 20 min fast train into Waterloo, Kingston town a 5 minutes drive with lots of Lovely shops! For £850k you should easily get a 4 bed however perhaps not detached and might need doing up a little for the nicer more central pets!

Juls1980 · 31/10/2018 20:56

Uckfield, Edenbridge are Sussex, so too far for me.

Ideally I want a 40-60 minute commute so Surrey north of Guildford I was thinking.

Surbiton (my brother lives there) and I think that's still a bit too 'London-ie' I want the detached to get more space and Surbiton is too similar to Kingston and new Malden in terms of being squashed together.

I would love Cobham but can't afford much there at all! Oxshott the same story! I think Esther is also in that bracket. Any other towns like Cobham anyone can recommend?

Fleet
Hartley Witney
Odiham

Might technically be Hants, but close to M4...

Bombaybunty · 31/10/2018 21:04

Dorking
Reigate

Have a look at this train map- then you can look at areas that are direct to Waterloo

Oblomov18 · 31/10/2018 21:26

Lyne
Weybridge

Both lovely.

Juls1980 · 31/10/2018 21:40

I'll check them all - thank you! Ideally Between Guildford and London somewhere.

sickmumma · 01/11/2018 13:22

If you like cobham have you looked at claygate? Weybridge also had some really lovely parts that could match what you are looking for but maybe a bit too far out!

Lottietabitha · 01/11/2018 13:41

Does Claygate have a village etc or is it just sort of part of Esher? Surbiton sounds so good but prob still very pricey and maybe still too built up...

Juls1980 · 01/11/2018 13:42

I'll have a look at claygate....I have a feeling that train is slow.

Has chessington got much good about it? That train line is fast

Haslemere?further out but on the fast train to London. Lovely little town. Very leafy.

AdoreTheBeach · 01/11/2018 14:26

Hi OP

When we moved from London, we followed the train line for main line stations. You’re very correct, some places you’ve mentioned (or have been mentioned) are slow trains. You’re very correct to look just north of Guildford (but south of M25 as prices drop outside M/5). Are you wanting a house to walk to the station or are you happy for a short drive? There is a park and ride for Guildford near Clandon. This opens some more possibilities. There’s also the Horsleys.

Also you can consider towns near Woking. West Byfleet (good train connection) and a little town centre or Chobham (cute little high street, short drive to woking station) for example.

Someone mentioned Odiham. It’s a lovely high street with many great places to eat/coffee but really much longer of a commute than the areas you were discussing.

jedishelly1 · 01/11/2018 14:44

Carshalton? Or Carshalton Beeches? 40 mins to London Victoria

sickmumma · 01/11/2018 16:08

Yes claygate is a more village feel, has a train station and limited buses but nice little parade of shops, not as busy as esher at all but it's between esher and Chessington, it also has a little common for walks etc.

Chessington doesn't sound like what you are looking for at all, you would get a lot for your budget but it's not village like at all and quite drab in parts - we lived Chessington/claygate borders which is the nicer side and have just moved to Surbiton at the start of this year. Being a bit snobby but where the stations are are the not so nice parts! It is central though and easy to get on m25 and a3 etc so quite good location wise.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 01/11/2018 16:23

Stoke D'Abernon? I used to live in Surbiton and loved Stoke D'Abernon.

Lottietabitha · 01/11/2018 16:44

Do you prefer surbiton? Seeing as you have a direct comparison of both!!

WhatsGoingOnEh · 01/11/2018 16:57

I loved Surbiton and wish I'd never moved away! But it's not at all rural, so I don't think it's what the OP wants.

Stoke D'A is tiny, leafy and surrounded by woodland.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 01/11/2018 17:00

Hold on -- I thought the OP wanted rural because this thread is in Rural Living. 🤔 I just RTFT and realised that rural living hasn't been mentioned at all. 😆

Most places around Surbiton, Claygate, Weybridge are gorgeous. If I won the lottery and moved back, I'd choose Thames Ditton (beautiful tiny village near Surbiton), or the Hampton Court area.

Oblomov18 · 01/11/2018 17:01

Hadn't OP already dismissed Surbiton ? her brother lives there?

Oblomov18 · 01/11/2018 17:04

Agreed Eh.
If I had enough money might move to Surbiton or Hampton Court.

But there is nothing 'rural' about any of the places that have already been mentioned.

OlderThanAverageforMN · 02/11/2018 11:30

The problem is that all the rural villages with stations North of Guildford don't have the cafe culture pp is looking for. You need to go South of Guildford for that.
