What age would be your ideal time to retire?

Just daydreaming here - what would be your ideal age to retire ?

I am thinking soon - 40, but this because I have small children and it would be lovely not having to stress about work (on top of all the other life stress)

PlutarchHeavensbee · 19/08/2026 16:45

Next year for me. Can’t bloody wait!!!

MsRubee · 19/08/2026 16:46

At 5pm today

maddiemookins16mum · 19/08/2026 16:47

60

I was thinking about this recently. I’d like 55 which is in 3.5 years…but. Private medical cover through work is huge perk. Also it is a lot of time to fill. I think I may look at reduced hours initially rather than full retirement.

MiddleAgedDread · 19/08/2026 16:50

I might just about be able to drag myself to 50 but quite frankly I've no idea how I'm going to do another 18 years to 67! Yes, I know I'd probably be bored (I totally wouldn't!!) but i've done this work thing for so many years I'm tired of the routine and need a break.

Mum2Fergus · 19/08/2026 16:51

I’m retired 18 months now, was 49 at my first attempt (COVID/lockdown hit so I went back to work remotely). Tried again 2024 and it’s going great so far.

LOCOJDS · 19/08/2026 16:52

55 but im now 62, didn't manage 55, but I am going next year at 63

curious79 · 19/08/2026 16:52

I always want to work. It’s the frequency I have sought to alter in the past

BingoWingsBeGone · 19/08/2026 16:58

I’ve sort of retired at 53 but not sure if this is it or not. Left under VR earlier this year and taken the summer off so we’ll see once the cold weather comes in….

So far I’m loving it and not been bored once!

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 19/08/2026 17:01

I always thought 60 - but now that it’s only three years away, I think somewhere older than 60 but younger or equal to 65.

DoreenCorkhill · 19/08/2026 17:03

I partially retired aged 55 but can’t see myself fully giving up work anytime soon . Aged 61 currently . As other have said reducing hours is a good option .

Likeiloveyou · 19/08/2026 17:04

About 52 would have been nice

Fab!! 😃

SemperIdem · 19/08/2026 17:05

Tomorrow. Alas I am only 37.

KittyCorncrake · 19/08/2026 17:09

I had no retirement age in mind as I changed career aged 53 to retrain as a secondary teacher and joined a brilliant school aged 56 after doing a a year’s supply there off and on.
It was a new lease of life as had been bored in previous career and the kids made me laugh every day. It was actually energizing and could have merrily continued for many more years, but my Financial Advisor told me (aged 63) that I was earning a pittance after tax and so should retire and ski while still have energy.
So I did.

RandomUsernameHere · 19/08/2026 17:14

Now. Also 40. I can guarantee I would not be bored!

mangopine · 19/08/2026 17:46

I have absolutely no idea. The idea of retirement scares me a little…like it’s the waiting room to death 🤣 I want to be healthy and rich enough to have a good retirement, and I want to still feel like I have purpose. In my head I like the idea of going part time around 60, maybe retiring around 65, but who knows, I’m 38 currently so may want to throw the towel in sooner than that as time goes on!

Halafel · 19/08/2026 17:49

I thought I'd go on into my 60s. I had a job I loved which wasn't physically demanding so why not.

Then a combination (I think) of menopause, bereavement and being treated like an invisible middle aged woman at work meant I couldn't summon up any motivation at all, and retired at 55.

I have a very busy and active retirement. No one I know is in a waiting room for death. Filling every day with work that means little to you on the other hand....

SnortCorner · 19/08/2026 17:50
  1. I'm currently 37.
Ihaveoflate · 19/08/2026 17:50

Ideally I'd reduce days to 2-3 a week from 60 and see how long I could go on like that. I'd happily go until 70 on reduced hours as long as the work remained fulfilling.

Realistically, I'll have to continue working in one form or another until my state pension at 67 because my other pensions probably won't be enough to live on.

minmooch · 19/08/2026 18:05

I retired at 57. Now 59. Love it and fill my time with dog walking, watercolour painting, spend lots of time by the sea, spend precious time with grandchildren. Wouldn’t have time to go back to work.
