What do introvert workaholic men do in retirement?

My DH could retire in five years but I am terrified of him becoming totally insular and not leaving the sofa and having no interests.

He’s always been a workaholic and is also very shy. He has a small number of friends but sees them rarely. He has no hobbies.

What on earth do such men do at retirement? He has no ideas other than watching tv. I’m worried I’m going to suddenly be married to my grandpa.

my fil took up baking instead.
researching, testing recipes, entering shows, baking for community sales (but always slinking out of the social side)

Could he become a charity trustee? Lots of charities crying out for people with skills and a bit of time. It's quite formal in some, so would feel a bit like work so maybe easier to cope with for an introvert. Or Rotary/Round table/ Probus. University of the third age, lots of special interest groups available. My dad is quite introverted and enjoys this, there's a purpose to meeting up so it's less small talk. Become a magistrate.

purplewithred has a thorough list but forgot the hovering. They could just hover at your shoulder while you do everything you usually do, and ask questions and suggest you do it differently Grin

@Covidasaurus my DH took unplanned early retirement last year following issues with his job due to Covid and an inheritance meaning he could afford to do it.

He has taken on all of the household tasks which I used to do as previously I worked PT and him FT. This means that we have more time to relax together , go for walks, out for meals etc .

I was a bit concerned for him last winter as he did spend a lot of time on the sofa in front of TV, but spring/ summer is better as he's out in the garden . We also have a dog which he takes on long walks .

He has spoken of learning to play guitar, he's bought the guitar but not booked the lessons yet: and has also spoken of getting a part time work but whilst he doesn't need to do this financially he is waiting until things are less risky Covid wise

You say he "could retire" - maybe he won't. Or maybe he'll work on the tills at Tesco. Or he might surprise you.
