INFJ anyone?

alwayssearchingforanswers · 18/06/2010 23:17

I test INFJ on the Myers Briggs personality testing score and wanted to hear from any others who are INFJ,in particular to chat about relationships.
I tend to have an open, friendly front with plenty of friends but then also have this hidden huge part of me with intense feelings and complicated beliefs about people and things...I often struggle with these two parts of me and often feel like different people on different days

Alwayssearchingforanswers - I tested INFJ and am shocked at how accurate it is. I often feel as though I am two different people - loving lots of company but then needing privacy. My head sometimes feels as though it will burst with different ideas about how things should be etc. I can be very principled too. I thought it might be because I am a typical Gemini.

When I looked at the list of careers for INFJ it is eerily similar to my interests as I am a nurse and would love to study psychology. I intend to do a counselling course soon. I have done a photography course is my spare time and am artistic too.

I had not heard of this test before but I am really grateful to you for bringing it to my attention. It has made me happy and relieved that others feel like this too (only 1% of the population though!).

WhenwillIfeelnormal · 19/06/2010 14:44

I wouldn't give much credence to the online tests tbh. The skill in reading these tests is in the feedback a qualified test administrator gives a person. Also, it depends how low or high you scored on each of the four. The most reliable and valid scores are ones involving the extremes e.g. really high on introversion (and in MBTI terms, the definition of introversion isn't the same as modern useage of that word).

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/06/2010 15:38

well, did it again with DH and got a much more "me" profile - im a ESFJ which is much more me

DH is an ISTJ. so im dominant extroverted feeling and he is dominant introverted sensing. seems opposites do attact!

redpyjamas · 19/06/2010 15:44

I'm INFJ like you OP.
I often feel that there are two sides of me too, and one of my worst fears is being misunderstood (which actually happens all the time).
Nioce to 'meet' another INFJ. There are not many of us about (one of the rarest types).
Have you any idea what type your children are? My 9 yr old dd is INFJ like me, and 7 yr old dd is ISFP. I find it incredibly hard to relate to her sometimes.

thanks for everyone's interesting replies

Grace ~ great, helpful post, will try a journal, always did one for many years but lapsed, mainly because I didn't want it to be read by anyone I think

WWIFN is right about the testing, mine was done as part of a career change,it was several pages long and then there was feedback. However there can be error in answering the questions in terms of the best fit

redpjs Hi! How do you know your dcs type, did they answer the questions or did you just assess them personally?

I hate being misunderstood...it usually happens in cases when I am asked something,I am sorting in my head which one of many equally valid answers to go for but I'm left looking a bit dim or indecisive! Or when I think ahead about what someone is going to say and somehow talk ahead of the conversation or joke but they don't realise and think I am a step behind!Don't know if you "get" that at all.

INFP here. The couple of descriptions of this "type" that I have looked at, are spot on. I can relate to your OP, alwayssearchingforanswers (INFP is pretty close to INFJ).

alwayssearchingforanswers · 19/06/2010 22:12

Hi rumbled....one of my biggest difficulties is feeling things really strongly and getting overwhelmed by it,especially loss and bereavement

OP posts:
redpyjamas · 19/06/2010 22:26

Hi alwayssearching,

I just observed my dds myself because I wanted to know what MB they were. So, of course I could be wrong. But I am really as sure as it is possible to be that dd1 is INFJ. I just see myself in her the whole time, vices and all.

Our type are probably one of the best at just knowing other people's types after only speaking to/observing them for a few minutes. Must be the intuition.

redpyjamas · 19/06/2010 22:28

OP - do you also find change really hard to deal with, unless you are thoroughly mentally prepared for it? Even positive change?

alwayssearchingforanswers · 19/06/2010 22:29

red,do you find when people are talking to you you are sort of thinking about who they are all the time?
and are you a good guesser?

OP posts:
alwayssearchingforanswers · 19/06/2010 22:32

positive change not so bad, negative change or loss, very hard..I tend to go over and over it to make it right[doesn't work obviously] but have improved with this with age
what about you?

OP posts:
redpyjamas · 19/06/2010 22:36

yes and yes. Our intuition is our dominant feature, and really highly developed.

At Uni once, I and my best friend ISTJ both had to attend a 5 minute interview with a prof that neither of us had met before. I went first. When I came out of the room, my friend was waiting at the door for her appointment. I whispered "ESFP".

She admitted that she had been annoyed initially that I had analysed another person without knowing them at all (apart from a 5 minute convo), but when she came out herself, she totally agreed that I was right.

redpyjamas · 19/06/2010 22:41

I'm just rubbish with all change. Takes me ages to get my head around it, and loads of pondering and writing my thoughts down and spending hours alone.

I'm a single mum, and a few years agoi I met someone really lovely (as I thought then). He took ages to persuade me into a relationship. I was so reluctant because I was content as I was, and didn't want to change.

Then he broke it off, and it took me a long time to get used to being single again. But now I am glad it ended.

Definitely the main problem when he split up was not missing him as an individual, but having to get un-used to being in a relationship. Hope you know what I mean. (there I go again! Please don't misunderstand me!!)

SolidGoldBrass · 19/06/2010 22:47

Yes, this sort of crap is always 'spookily accurate' because it consists of various bland statements that apply to pretty much everyone.

alwayssearchingforanswers · 19/06/2010 22:49

I think I know what you mean, but in my case if I meet someone I really like and feel is a sort of soul mate,I really miss them if i can't spend enough time with them or want a relationship with them but can't have one

OP posts:
redpyjamas · 19/06/2010 22:52

I could have a guess what type you are SGB

alwayssearchingforanswers · 19/06/2010 22:59

SGB don't forget this isn't an impersonal thing like astrology it is based on the personality of the person derived from the detailed questionnaire, designed in part to help people understand their relationships and actions better

if you aren't interested don't bother with the thread,we are all different after all

philosophy and psychology are by definition rather intense and introspective and not everyone is like that, but some people are...no need to roll eyes there are enough pragmatic posters on mumsnet for you to chat with, surely you can allow red and I peace to talk without patronising put downs

OP posts:
alwayssearchingforanswers · 19/06/2010 23:00

that would be the intolerant type maybe

OP posts:
SolidGoldBrass · 20/06/2010 00:23

Thing is, this stuff is really just speculative junk when it's not an out and out con trick. People are of course entitled to spend their own money on junk but it's a bit worrying when things like job applications are being decided by peddlers of woo-bollocks.

alwayssearchingforanswers · 20/06/2010 00:50

well as I say it's not a prediction like astrology which you seem to be confusing it with,SGB,it is a method of fitting your personality into the best fit out of 16 types from the questions..it is open to error and also is fairly generalistic...obviously the people in the group share similarities of approach but are not the same people

OP posts:
redpyjamas · 20/06/2010 18:02

Are job applications really decided on the merits of MB??

I would have thought that certain types are just more likely to apply for one job rather than another in the first place.

Alwayssearching is right. Just because you are one of the 16 types does not make you the same exactly as another person of the same type. But there are a lot of similarities and a certain element of looking at thwe world from the same viewpoint.

Nice to chat always. I only know two other INFJs, I think (incl. my dd).

Personally I find it really useful to know about the differences. It helps me in my dealings and relationships with others. And to be more appreciative of myself and others too.

mathanxiety · 20/06/2010 20:56

INTJ here. Only a T away...

redpyjamas · 20/06/2010 22:08

You're lucky mathanxiety.

I sometimes wish I could be more of a T.

BelleDameSansMerci · 20/06/2010 22:15

I've always been ENTJ on these... I bet SGB would be too!!
