Janbo25 - I got the Mirena Coil fitted. Its been great so far! I still get periods, but they are painfree!!!! Wooooohhooooo! Plus its in there for 5 yrs.

Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 16:04

can that be fitted at anytime?

OP posts:
compo · 01/08/2005 16:04

the pill has always worked for me

happymerryberries · 01/08/2005 16:05

It depends how long a gap you want between children/ if you want any more at all! Also youe age etc and how disastrous it would be if the contraception failed and you got pg

Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 16:05

i am so forgetful thats my worry, i always used to forget to take the pill last time and was forever having to use morning after pill!

Normally you get it fitted when you are having your AF as the cervix is a bit more open.... but yes you can have it fitted any time. Just make an appointment at your GP and they will book you in for your "fitting".

Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 16:06

stilll only young, don't plan on having anymore just yet for sometime if at all, although would not be a major disator

OP posts:
Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 16:06

will it hurt?? lol

OP posts:
Toothache · 01/08/2005 16:08

ALOT less than another baby's head squeezing out of there will!!!

It was a bit uncomfortable.... much like having a smear. I had period pains for about 2 days afterwards, but that was it.

happymerryberries · 01/08/2005 16:08

If you are having an IUD fitted it usualy makes sense for it to be needed for a year or two, IYSWIM

Most efective is the hormonal IUD

Most effective after than the pill, then the combined pill (not for you if you forget things tho! )

Then barrier methods like the condom and the diaphragm....these can be great if gettingpg isn't a disaster

Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 16:09

lol i suppose you're right, having gallstone problem sorted at the mo so might wait a while, i have considered the impant in my arm?

OP posts:
Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 16:10

i think condom is great but you never get a good feeling like you do without, plus it is hassle don't you think?

OP posts:
happymerryberries · 01/08/2005 16:11

Implants can be iffy to remove, what about the injection?

Diaphragem is less hassle than the condom and can be put in way before 'anything' starts IYSWIM

Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 16:12

can they whys that??

sorry if i am naive but what is the diaphraym and how do it work?

OP posts:
happymerryberries · 01/08/2005 16:15

The diaphragm is a little silicon 'dome' that you fold and push up so that it coveres your cervix. Used with a spemicide it is slighly less effective than a condom. You can put it in earlier than you intend to haver it away! Onve it is in there neither partner can feel it. You have to leave it in place for a set time to kill off the sperm, can't remember how long.

A great method for spacing a family, not recomended for people who would find getting pg a nightmare iyswim.

Has to be fitted in a FPC

Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 16:18

would you not find that all your sexual activity as to be planned though ??

OP posts:
spursmum · 01/08/2005 16:28

Just thought I would add that I couldn't have the implant or injections because of previous bouts of depression so my GP put me on the patch. Works just like the pill but goes through the skin like a nicotine patch adn you only have to change it once a week. An absolute godsend if you have a sieve for a brain like I have!!!

madmarchhare · 01/08/2005 16:29

(have a word yourself if you take your SIL!)

happymerryberries · 01/08/2005 16:31

No you can put it in every evening and if you go for it, good and if not it doesn't matter.

Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 17:01

why do we women have all the decisions to make - the patch sounds quite good??

OP posts:
spursmum · 01/08/2005 17:06

The patch is fabulous!!! Only have to remember 1 day a week and you can hide it under your undies so noone sees it!! Plus no weight gain(for me), no period pains and no panics if you forget it!!( it can be changed up to 36 hrs after it should have been)

Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 17:07

sounds great although wasn't there some bad publicity about them a while back??

how effective r they?

OP posts:
spursmum · 01/08/2005 17:17

They work fabulously for me but I guess that everyone is different and what I think is a godsend may not suit everyone else. Can't say that I have heard any bad things about them but I did discuss all pros and cons with my GP and I also take a lot of the media reorts with a pinch of salt until I know all the details.

spursmum · 01/08/2005 17:18

Ooops forgot...the effective rating is the same as the pill if used correctly. 99%

Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 17:19

and i presume it is easy to use correctly???
