GET MY MIRENA OUT!!!!!
I had a mirena coil for 2 months due to heavy periods and aneamia. Unfortunately the side affects were awful. My doctor tried to convince me that I needed it because of my aneamia and that the side affects were not due to Mirena but something else and sent off for tests (thyroid etc) that I didn't want.
I felt sure it was the Mirena as I had had similar symptoms on the pill and all the side affects (headache, cramps, bloating, joint pain, neck/gland pain, lethargy etc) only started after the Mirena was inserted.
In desparation I went to the walk-in centre at the hospital and a nurse took pity on me and got a doctor to take it out. The next day I felt like a different person, not 100% but so much better, just waking up without a headache for the first time in a month was enough to make me smile. When I went back to my doctor she was almost hostile that I had had it taken out at the hospital and said by going there I had cost the NHS a lot of money equivalent to the cost of a hernia operation! Personally as a tax payer for 20+ years I felt it wasn't too much of an ask as it took less than 5 minutes of the doctors time and she was very happy to do - telling me that they got a lot of women with my symptoms coming in to have their Mirena's removed.
My advice is that Mirena works for some, I know several woman who are very happy with it, for some it's the lesser of two evils due to really bad periods, but for others like me the cons totally outweigh the pros. Trust your body and your instincts and if you think it is causing you more harm than good then insist it comes out! I'd hate to think money was at the heart of it, but my experience is doctors seem very keen for you to have it and very reluctant to admit it isn't right for you.
By the way, I regularly got asked at the Doctors about what contraception I use until I finally agreed to a Mirena coil. I asked my husband if he ever got questioned about a vasectomy, funnily enough that or anything else to do with contraception has never been mentioned to him, seems contraception is just a woman's issue!
