Had the mirena coil fitted from feb this year and am still staining! I have lack of sex drive and now over the last week of so feel so down and depressed. I do suffer from pnd and am on ad. but felt myself getting better and more like myself only for this last week. I have been crying at everything, feeling really sad for nothing and really irratiable especially with my dcs. Suprise next day i started staining again! Its like permanent pmt or is it my pnd flaring back up again.I cannot take any kind of contraceptive pill as they too make me like this but dr says the hormone is localised to the womb! I always have been getting bad period pains that dr had to prescribe pain killers it was that bad. Anyone else suffer anything similar before i make a decision to have it removed. Unfortunitely it feels like the only other option is sterisation which is very very final but dont feel i could cope with pnd and feeling this low again. ps i have got pnd after every baby ive had, i have 3.

I had the Merina coil fitted 8 weeks ago, and in that 8 weeks have experienced hair thinning, hair loss, anxiety attacks, constant bleeding, palpitations, headaches, feeling really down in the dumps and just feeling like im living in a blur really. I had it taken out last week and already feel like my old self again. My doctor was fantastic and could see how down i was and was really understanding about taking the coil out. I really didnt want to feel like that anymore, its a shame it didnt work for me but i have friends who think its amazing. So to those who are thinking of giving it a go, good luck and i hope it works for you,it shows that it works for some and unfortunatly not for me. xx

I have had the mirena coil for 18 months and the only advantage is lighter periods.I have had bad headaches/migraines and very bad PMT. I am 44 so not sure whether these symptoms maybe due to the menopause or the coil.

last sept i visited a gyni with suspected endometriosis and was advised to have a mirena coil fitted because of the pain i was experiencing and also having very heavy painful periods, i am due for my follow up appointment and am going to ask for it to be removed i have gained so much weight, the last time i was this weight was 10 yrs ago after having my second daughter. my boobs are extremely painful and i have pangs of feeling really sick, it has not stopped the pain i suffer and even though my periods are lighter they last for much longer, my depression as hit an all time low and my moods swings are horrendous, so i dont think it is for me, although my friend as it fitted and she gets on fine with it, i suppose it depends on the individual

The Mirena was a disaster for me. I used to get PMS for a few days every month, with the Mirena I had headaches, ZERO libido, mood swings and a horrible smouldering anger inside all the time. I got it taken out. Now we are just using condoms though I am considering the copper coil, just hate the thought of something else being put up inside me.

I'll tell you something though, I will never take any form of hormonal contraception again, it may work for some women, but I'm not one of them!

Mirena Mirena Mirena, what an absolute nightmare I had with this contraception. After about a year of having this coil I started to suffer from depression like syndroms, extreme OCD, extreme hair loss, complete lack of sex drive, high blood pressure, dizziness and fainting, chills and also polyps.

I only linked all these symptoms to the coil by accident. I also suffered from the worst rage ever - I nearly had it out with a student at work and on top of that I just always kept on crying. I decided to have it taken out and all the above symptoms disappeared. Yes I also thought I was pregnant, the coil mimicks pregnancy symptoms. For me the Mirena coil was a complete disaster, I am now on the copper coil and loving it

I have never posted on a forum before but I feel I really must as a result of this evil contraceptive called the Mirena Coil.
Thankfully, I only had it in for 8 months & to think that in that time, it turned me from a happy person into a monster, who was starting to think there was nothing in life to live for (bearing in mind, I am a mother of 3 wonderful children!). Was forever ttearful.

As well as depression, which I had never suffered from, i gained over 1 1/2 stone in weight - which no matter what I did could not be shifted due to a monstrous appetite for sweet & sugary food.

I had a constant bloated tummy, which led a parent at my kids school to ask when I was expecting child no. 4!

Complete and utter loss of libido, to the extent that I thought I no longer loved my husband & might therefore have to consider divorce!

The last straw was when I started to suffer from debilitating back pain - such that I couldn't get out of bed without being in agony or get into the car, without my son lifting my legs in.

I only connected all these ailments to the coil after only accidently coming across posts, through researching what was causing the back pain.

In my opinion, there appears to be what could be termed a conspiracy by GPs refusing to believe that in some women the coil produces some distressing & debilitating side effects. I was practically bullied by my GP into having the coil inserted in the 1st place & then he refused to remove it when I asked him to - I had to bypass him by getting the nurse to remove it!

Have only had it removed for 4 weeks now, but already bloatedness has gone, feeling happier, although sex drive still low, not eating as much & my back within days of having the evil thing removed, started to get better!

Ladies, for some the MC works fine, for others like myself, it can become a living nightmare - all I ask is if you are thinking of having it inserted, that you at least be aware of its potential side-effects & are not caught unaware. I didn't read the info leaflet given to me after insertion - in fact I threw it away as I did not expect something recommended by my GP as safe to cause me so much pain & heartache.

Please, we are intelligent women, who know our bodies better than anyone, doctor or no doctor, so lets listen to it, when its not happy!

It made me put on 2 stones in 6 weeks. It was so obvious it was the Mirena causing it due to the sheer speed with which the weight went on. I'm usually a size 8/10 and don't struggle with my weight.

When I first put two and two together I googled it and found loads of forums where women were talking about the weight gain with Mirena. Never again. I took the evil thing out, lost the weight (through dieting and exercise) and have easily remained slim over a year and a half later.

I had a gynefix (I still LOVE the name) and it was problem free. When it was due to be replaced, I couldn't get a gynefix again and had the mirena. It was awful. I had night sweats, horrendous mood swings and felt like life was pointless. The doctor said that the symptoms weren't related to the mirena and suggested that I was having an early menopause. I was 30. It was a real shock to be told that if I wanted kids I'd better try immediately.

I had it removed, and had menopause tests. By the time the results came back, I was already pregnant. All the symptoms disappeared!

I really loved not having an IUD in, but my marriage ended and I couldn't risk having another baby, so this time round, I've had a copper coil. I have PMT for longer than before (for a few days compared to about 30 mins when I have no IUD) and my PMS symptoms last about a week, including teariness, headaches and back pain. But it's nothing like what I experienced with the Mirena. I thought I was going insane at the time.

So, it looks like this is it for me, unless my new partner decides to opt for a couple of bricks...

I had one and experienced all the side effects - mood swings, pmt, weight gain, lack of libido and had it removed.

My older sister has had one for 4 years with no side effects and loves it.

Think it just shows how different we all are and how hormones affect each of us differently.

I got a Mirena after a lot of fighting against the idea with my Gyne. I have Endometriosis and have tried ALL the other options, including surgery. I then heard a top london gyne from a private clinic talk about it and it convinced me to try. I did have a few problems in the first 6 months with irregular bleeding, combinations of heavy then light etc, but it's now all settled down (it was a year in March). I generally have very light, bleeds, but the best thing of all is I don't have the pains I was having before with my Endometriosis. I've suffered for 7 years with horrendous pain and, thanks to my Mirena, it's finally stopped! Even surgery didn't manage that for more than 6 months! Technically it's not coil in the same sense of a copper coil, which they don't recommend if you've not had kids, but are planning to. I'm only having mine out later this year to get pregnant. As for horomones, I've been on so many different ones, this is the best. Cerazate (aka the mini pill) sent me nuts, Provera, which I had the same quantity as is in the 3 month injection every 5 days made me spotty and the combined pill, which I had been successfully taking for years, turned out to be putting me at severe risk of having a stroke!

Having the Mirena was painful, as is any coil, and I did have to get through the early months, but now I'm glad I did. I'll certainly have it again in the future! Not only is it good for Endometriosis, but it's also meant to be good for Menopausal symptoms too.

Hi

I had a mirena coil fitted a few months ago.
The only problems I have had have been spotting and a period every 2-3 weeks.
However my periods have been much lighter (the reason for my having the coil fitted). My periods were every 3 weeks too before the coil but I am hoping this will stop in time.
I did start to put on a bit of weight but have started to cut down on what I am eating.
As for mood swings I used to experience dreadful mood swings but now feel much happier/easy going. I also don't have the cramps I had before, so for me it has been a positve experience. Just hoping that my periods will stop altogether.

The mirena as said is a contraceptive coil, the copper coil works as it aborts/miscarries any pregnancy.

The mirena to be honest is a much better coil, shame it does not work for all.

Hi OP

I haven't read the rest of the replies, but just wanted to add my experience of the mirena. I had it fitted for just over a year, loved it at first, but after about 8 months just felt so awful - bloated, felt pregnant, depressed. It got worse and worse and after about 12 months my mood was so low I was having flashes of wanting to commit suicide. Then I found out that 20% of women who use the mirena then end up with fertility problems and I decided enough was enough! I made an apppointment to get it removed, but one evening when I felt particularly dreadful I pulled it out myself...(did later visit the docs to check i hadn't damaged myself!) I felt a massive relief, immediately, like a weight form my lower back and abdomen had been lifted and it was like the fog in my head had cleared. I did suffer a hormone crash and some ongoing mental health problems for the next couple of months as my body got back to normal, but now I am fully recovered. AND I've lost the weight I couldn't shift while i had it - and i'm a normally slim person.

I know some people love it, but there are clearly those of us who don't suit a hormonal contraceptive!

I had a good five years on the Mirena - swore by it. But six months ago I had it 'renewed' and had a dreadful time - weight gain, mood swings, irritability, low lying sadness and mild depression. Had no time for dds or dh, was horrible!

Had it removed three weeks ago at FPC (used the reason that I had changed my mind and wanted another baby because I know the NHS can be reluctant to remove it for side effect reasons.)

Feel so much better - appetite has decreased (less cravings for carbs etc - I had no idea how much I'd been eating until my appetite diminished to normal levels), feel generally 'lighter' and more balanced mood-wise.

Had a bit of a rubbish on and off crampy session for a week or two afterwards but was strangely excited to have a period again! Grin

Hi,

I had the merena coil fitted just over 2 years ago, and since then I have drastically changed in terms of moods; mardy all the time, depressed, crying, my apetite, I feel I have gained quite a lot of weight. I wasn't sure it was down to the coil but reflecting back on how I was before and researching on the internet, it looks like it could this. I just don't ever feel myself to how I used to be, also I haven't had a period for 2years either, only spotted once, is this normal? Does anyone reccommend I have it taken out?

Thanks :) x

I had 2 copper coils in my late 20s/early 30s. 1 was a copper7 the other a graviguardT. It was after a pill scare. I later went back on the pill before having dd. Then I made the mistake of having a Mirena. I bled sort of sludgy bleeding for nearly a year. Then I had it taken out - despite the gp objecting because of the cost.

Then the bleeding stopped. I HATED the damn thing.

The original copper7 was perfect, the graviguardT caused spotting every time I went to the gym - I used to workout 4 times a week and finish with 125 twisting sit-ups. Somehow the sit-ups didn't agree with it. Apparently the copper7 was discontinued due to causing fertility problems. 'Twas a bugger, it seemed to really suit me.

My gynae told me to expect bleeding on and off for up to 6 months.
I bled solidly for 3 months, then he put me on a mini pill to thin the womb lining down, then it stopped. Have only had breakthru bleeding maybe one day a month since then.
This is my 2nd coil and i love it, no side effects, no weight gain and no periods
