Has anyone got pregnant using the 'pull out method'???

Just wondering how reliable the 'pull out method' of contraception is. Dh and I dont like condoms but already have 3 4 and under. Youngest child is 6m and Im still breastfeeding, no periods yet but didnt start till about 7m + w the others. Ive read that the mini pill doesnt stop you ovulating but stops anything implanting which I dont like the idea of BUT we def dnt wana get preg any time soon! Have heard theres a new pill to take when breastfeeding which stops ovulation but its nt at our surgery yet.

My friend got pregnant using withdrawal. Have you considered a copper coil - no hormones.

shoneshine · 06/01/2009 10:37

Some friends have the coil but Im too scared to have it fitted, sounds painful! A friend even had to have the wires trimmed, ouch! No hormones sounds good though!

i have 2 children to show for it

i have a copper coil and its great
a bit nippy to have inserted but when its in its in and no probs

hippipotami · 06/01/2009 10:41

Dh and I have been using this method for the past 18 years. We have two children, both of which were planned. It works for us

MrsMattie · 06/01/2009 10:41

I wouldn't try it unless you would be Ok about an 'accident'!

pgwithnumber3 · 06/01/2009 10:42

Yes, the result of which is due in 4 weeks!

numptysmummy · 06/01/2009 10:43

I live in hope of it not working!

HeadFairy · 06/01/2009 10:44

My friend got pg three times using the pull out method... you'd think she'd have realised how unreliable it was! Much better IMO to track your cycle closely and get to know when you're fertile period is and avoid sex on those days. Not a 100% but it's better than pulling out if you don't want to go down the barrier method or hormonal contraceptive route.

hippipotami · 06/01/2009 10:45

That is just it Mrs Mattie, we would be okay with an accident. (I would quite like one) We conceived ds the first time we decided not to 'pull out'. With dd it took 9 months of frequent trying. So I guess I am not actually that fertile hence we have not had an accident....

hippipotami · 06/01/2009 10:46

Headfairy, I do have a good idea of when my period is, what my cycle lenght is, and I can feel when I ovulate. So yes, that will contribute to us not having had an accident

aseriouslyblondemoment · 06/01/2009 10:46

er yes hehe!!
have you thought about the injection as i've heard that it is good and suitable for breast feeding mums too

pgwithnumber3 · 06/01/2009 10:49

hippi, I too was breastfeeding.

hippipotami · 06/01/2009 10:49

Ooo, I had the injection. Never again! I suffered very very badly from depression caused by the hormones in it. I only had 3 injections but after those it took 3 years for my periods to return. That's how much it messed up my natural rhythm. I now would not touch the injections with a bargepole.

honestfriend · 06/01/2009 10:50

Not safe- no experience- but have a 20yr old daughter as a result of the "safe peiod" lol.

We wanted another DC anyway, but not quite at that time- thought it was way too soon in my cycle, which were regualrly 30-ish days, to get preg- must have been super long life sperm.

nailpolish · 06/01/2009 10:51

oh i hated injections too
my appetite was MAASSIVE and i put on 3 stone and iw as a moody cow

thats why i have a copper coil - i dont like the thought of artificial hormones

idobelieveinfairies · 06/01/2009 10:51

Yes, with twins, and conceived on day 25 of my 28 day cycle.......

not reliable

serenity · 06/01/2009 10:52

DS2 was concieved because we were crap at using condoms, and tended to rely on withdrawal instead - I thought I was quite canny about my cycle, but obviously wasn't quite spot on We do concieve very easily though (first month of trying with DS1, second with DD) so really isn't advisable for us!

littleducks · 06/01/2009 10:54

what about a diaphragm or cap?

aseriouslyblondemoment · 06/01/2009 10:57

oh dear was considering the injection myself as dont think that the pill would be suitable for me
any positive stories about it?
sorry for hijack btw xx

abedelia · 06/01/2009 11:08

Diaphragm worked for me, my sister used the injection, developed massive appetite and put on over a stone, then became pg regardless. I'd never try it. Just don't fancy something that isn't immediately reversible if you change your mind.

wintercitylover · 06/01/2009 11:13

Another vote here for the diaphragm or cap. It worked for me throughout my 13yr marriage (often without spermicide) and I am pretty fertile.

I went to fp recently to get another one (not needed for a while for various reasons) and the doctor looked at me like I was an oddity.

When I asked her why not many people used it anymore she said it was because they liked something more spontaneous. To my mind they seemed to be pushing the pill and/or injection even for me in my 40s. I found that rather chilling tbh.

Yeah that's all very well I thought but I have no wish to pump my body full of hormones again (used to be on the pill years ago)

aseriouslyblondemoment · 06/01/2009 11:14

thanks will bear it in mind
but need to sort myself out pronto
and have already done my bit for humanity lol!!

wintercitylover · 06/01/2009 11:15

Just to add that no health professional would recommend that you use it without spermicide to - for cap/diaphragm to be most effective it should be used with spermicide.
