re the car rolling down the driveway...

my mum did this and still gets teased about it, but it nearly wasn't funny - car rolled down the drive, across a main road before somehow stopping before rolling down the steep hill opposite towards the river

luckily we weren't in it. luckily there were no cars coming etc etc. I think I tend to be cautious because most things that you think are a tiny risk have actually happened in our family

Then again, Et's Mammy, they could also get struck by lightning while asleep in cot. Freaky accidents happen...

IAteDavinaForDinner · 22/09/2008 22:27

"So you never put him in his cot for a nap? You always stand over him while he sleeps so that he never wakes up alone? "

He doesn't normally have company when he's in his cot. In contrast, when in the car there's generally at least one other person in it with him.

If I was on a car journey and I fell asleep and then woke to find I was alone in a stationary car it would make me freak out a bit!

So you wake up - wave your arms about a bit -start wondering where everyone is (you know where you are because you're in your nice familiar car seat) then Granny turns up and takes you in to meet her lovely grannyish friends and if you're lucky and you're old enough there might be cake. Very traumatic.

Seeker- 'Granny turns up and takes you in to meet her lovely grannyish friends and if you're lucky and you're old enough there might be cake'

Made me cry a bit thinking about my granny. She did have some lovely friends...and her cakes were delicious.....

Well to go against the grain - don't ever do this, 99% of the time fine, however, my DP is a fireman and last year had to go a case where a car had caught fire for no reason with kids strapped in, a really bad situation resulting in a fatality. Hardly ever happens, but he would say is it worth the risk for that one off chance, I would say definitely not.

i don't have a drive so never had the opportunity to do this myself BUT I wouldn't do it - I would be annoyed too op and I think you are perfectly entitled to tell her you don't approve. If you are genuinely not happy with the care she is providing then you may need to think about alternative arrangements as grandparents (ime) do tend to do things their way and it can be quite difficult to challenge this.

talking of car rolling down the drive = my parents left me in a car once (I think the engine must have been running unless I turned it on! ) and the car rolled right down a hill and straight towards the big front glass window of a shop at the bottom of the hill. Luckily my dad noticed and ran out of the shop, jumped into the car and managed to stop it just in time....
