Should I have had sex with him by now?

Escaped a brutal 25 year marriage from a cheating brute and after three years had what I thought was a loving year long relationship with a man who gave me the tender loving intimacy that I had longed for all my life. Except that I got an awful uti that landed me in hospital and which took six months to treat (which he was really cruel about). And except for the fact than he cheated on me with two women while I had the uti.

7 months later I met someone else who seemed to like me (he is 60 and so a bit older than me and has had one ten year relationship but never lived with anyone). He held my hand and seemed sweet intelligent and kind. We have been seeing each other for a little over two months but have not had penetrative sex. Last night he told me that I would be pushed to find a man who would put up with rhis and most women would have done it by now. I said that perhaps he should find someone else. It’s ended.

I feel I have to justify this to you all and so I will. In those two months, there has been sexual intimacy almost every time we have met (once a week). This began from the third date when I told him that I had had a brutal marriage and please would he be gentle with me. I also wanted to know his sexual history and so was v unhappy the next time (fourth date )when he wanted to have penetrative sex. I said no. I wasn’t aroused enough and nervous. In the last month I ended up fracturing a bone in my foot so am wearing one of those medical shoes and also was terrified I had got a uti from the sexual activity so had to have testing for this.

He was not happy with me yesterday because he wants proper sex and “most men” would do also by now he said. He said that I was giving out mixed messages. Is this true? I’m still wearing the medical shoe for my foot.

Just sad about this all. Are there really rules/ expectations for when you do it?

I once worked with a load of men in their 20s and heard them all agreeing that they would dump anyone who wouldn't have sex after three dates. I was shocked at the time.

I also know men at the other extreme who waited for marriage.

My DH waited until I was ready, which was significantly longer than four dates. There's no way I'd be sleeping with someone in such a short time. Plus I insist we both have std checks first. If someone pressured me like that I'd definitely ditch him.

People saying if it hasn't worked by 2 months etc have not properly processed that you broke your foot, and/or they have never broken something like that. Such an injury really changes your amount of physical energy and it's just so uncomfortable.

Besides that, he "doesn't like condoms"?? And doesn't kiss well, doesn't do foreplay, tried it without consent and wants unprotected sex with a relatively partner?? Yeah I don't bloody think so! Borders on incel, not incompatible.
You are very well rid.

Oh OP@Blueneptune Im sorry. you have been so unlucky. You don’t have to justify yourself and I’m sorry but he’s not a nice guy. My (now) husband “waited” much longer than 2 months because I wasn’t ready and had been assaulted before. And never once said the horrible things this man has said to you. You deserve better.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 22/09/2026 21:13

I’m so sorry, what a horrible man!

I would say that I get the feeling you were appeasing him- doing some sexual acts to keep him at bay until you actually wanted to be sexually involved.

When it’s time, you really want to. It will have been hard to stop yourselves. Until then, it isn’t time.

And what’s normal and what ‘other people do’ is totally irrelevant.
What matters is the two people both really wanting it together.

Anyone that’s pushing faster than you are ready, is doing it wrong by definition.

If you feel pressured into having sex with him, you probably won't be relaxed enough for it not to be painful.
Has he has STD tests to reassure you that he's safe to have sex without a condom?
He sounds selfish and impatient - if it was me, I'd dump him.
There are some nice men out there - I know as I was lucky enough to meet one of them a couple of years ago and he has been considerate and very patient (he's slightly older than your pushy man).
We now have amazing sex that we both want, because I trust him completely as he spent time to show me that he was trustworthy.
And to his "most women" comment, this woman wouldn't....

Yes I don’t feel safe.

i think things would be different if it was all slower and he was gentler with me. I had said v quietly and hesitantly when we were first intimate about the brutal marriage. But the very next time we met he tried to put it in me when I was dry and not turned on. And this without asking me and when we had not had a conversation about condoms (he doesn’t like them) or previous partners. So I don’t really trust him I suppose. And he is very vigorous.

This is grim, OP. Please realise this REALLY isn’t a guy you need in your life.

No I don’t think so and I don’t think he sounds nice. To share my experience, I was in my early 30s when I met my husband and it took me about that long to be ready for that. He has said since that he wondered if it was ever going to happen and also that it quite reassured him because it didn’t seem like I’d find it easy to have an affair (he is right!) !!
