Dealing with friend who made degrading comments

Jen7425 · 28/08/2026 16:24

Ive recently moved in with bf and was invited to meet one of his oldest friends and their family. My bf has known this guy for around 40 years. He is also close to his 4 children who are now aged 20 to 24, and has been all their lives. He didn't want me to meet his friend for a long time but eventually said it was because he can be racist at times and he didn't want me hearing that as he knew I'd be upset by it.
We were invited around for a bbq with the family and the wife and grown up children were welcoming and friendly. However my bfs mate only spoke to me once, by asking what I did for a living. Before I answered in front of everyone he suggested I was a stripper?!? Then quickly followed it up with oh no you cant be as you work from home. He didn't laugh or even smile. I was stunned, but then quickly told him what I actually do and he said nothing further. No one else said anything. Since this he has driven past me locally and ignored me. I met him once in the supermarket with my bf before the bbq and I said hello, he didn't reply just kept talking to bf.
At the time of the bbq I felt annoyed but as time has gone on, this was a few weeks ago, im livid about it, how degrading it was. Im 52 years old and have a well paid senior management professional job that I have nearly 30 years experience in.
My bf has now been invited to spend an evening at this friends whilst his wife is away and said he is going. He isn't happy with what his friend said to me but doesn't know what to do about it.
Half of me doesn't want to make a big deal of it in case there is a fallout and loads of drama, but I have told bf im very uncomfortable with him remaining close to this friend after the degrading comments. Half of me wants him to never see him again or at least address it with him so he knows it is unacceptable.
Any ideas on how to deal with this rubbish?

Absolutely not. You started harassing me through private message, you got the wrong end of the stick and that's why Mumsnet deleted your accusations. You are literally harassing people on here. Just waiting for you to get banned. Lots of people have reported you.

I have no idea what you are talking about

How did I get the wrong end of the stick?

The Op literally says the man is racist!!

Why? Of course a young police cadet was mainly going to be dealing with people breaking the law.

He didn't complete his training though, so you needn't worry that there's a racist cop out there.

ETA that I don't know what happened with those extra words in my post that you quoted.

Edited

Thank goodness he didn’t

I think she means the last third of that quote, that poster has extra words in her sentence. My iPad does that to me too.

krustykittens · 28/08/2026 17:51

So your BF knows his friend is racist and he can see how rudely he is treating you and yet his response is to just ignore it all? I agree with PPs, birds of a feather and all that. Your BF either agrees with him or is so weak he can't stand up to him. Neither scenario spells out a happy relationship for you.

My DH has dumped friends for expressing repugnant views. Like fuck would he stand to one side and let a friend of his treat me like crap! The point is that no, you shouldn't demand he stop seeing his friend but if you are going to be his life partner/spouse, he should love and respect you enough to not have to be asked!

Cawfee0 · 28/08/2026 17:53

@Doigoforit2 I think you'll find Mumsnet checked that accusation out and deleted YOUR post. You are without doubt the most aggressive poster I've ever come across on here and I've been here years. I saw you on a thread yesterday literally harassing a mother of a child with disabilities. Vile. ETA this is the last time I will respond to you. I don't want to derail OP's thread.

I think being loyal to a good friend of 40 years is actually a good sign, even if he makes very strange comments.

It’s a bit more than strange comments, though, isn’t it?

Then for the friend to ignore OP. Nah. Life’s too short to engage with idiots like that.

whippersnapper55 · 28/08/2026 18:21

I judge people by the company they keep - if your bf isn't willing to speak to his friend about his rudeness towards you, I'd be rethinking the bf. My DH would be furious if any of his friends were rude to me but honestly, his friends are all nice because he wouldn't be friends with someone who's a prick!

@Jen7425 Just wondering ; maybe your bf has form for bringing women he meets at strip clubs around and the question was asked naturally. If someone would have asked me if I was a stripper at my age (46 so close to OPs 52) I think I would have laughed because it would be so ridiculous and obvious to everyone that I couldn't be.

I’m a bit confused, are you a POC or something else where he’d be racist/ableist etc?
he sounds awful,
but is there a reason he was shitty with you?I wouldn’t be impressed if my partner didn’t give him some ‘feedback’ after his rude behaviour, at the very least, but if he was doing it because you’re a POC I’d be livid at my partner

Looks like you are on mumsnets radar.
Maybe email them

TheOccupier · 28/08/2026 19:25

Are you the same ethnicity as your bf and his horrible friend, OP?

Rhaidimiddim · 28/08/2026 19:30

Dump the BF. He has a mate who is a misogynist and doesn't see thebproblem.

Can you imagine how they talk about you when it is just them?

Greenseacat · 28/08/2026 19:31

Sparkletastic · 28/08/2026 16:40

This friend doesn’t reflect well on your DP.

This.

It would concern me to find out that a partner has a long term friend who makes disrespectful, misogynist comments and has racist views.

If your partner was truly a decent guy he would not want to maintain a friendship with a man like that so I would question his character too.

5682Jhd · 28/08/2026 19:35

I don’t think you can force your boyfriend to ditch his friend so your options are..
An ultimatum.. me or the friend but accept that could mean the end of your relationship.
Or you accept that your boyfriend sees some good qualities in this friend and trust that it’s not because your boyfriend is also a racist/misogynist.
Either way thank your lucky starts that you don’t ever need to be in this man’s company, it’s good that he ignores you in supermarkets, would you really want somebody like that stopping you in Sainsburys for chit chat anyway?
My husband has one friend that I don’t really like (he hasn’t seen his daughter in years and goes to Thailand every year and gets into “relationships” with women 25/30 years younger than him.
it’s gross and exploitative in mine and my husband’s opinion but it’s not illegal. I don’t think it makes my husband a
terrible man for keeping this friendship, he obviously sees good qualities and I accept that.

CamillaMcCauley · 28/08/2026 19:48

My ex had a best friend who was a misogynist. My ex would comment about how bad his comments were after he said something appalling, but would “keep the peace” at the time.

Eventually I realised that my ex was a misogynist too, he was just pretending he wasn’t to look good to women. So he looked down on women secretly but wanted their approval publically, nice toxic mix.

I don’t hang out with people who I know to be racists and misogynists. The fact that your boyfriend’s friend appears to be both doesn’t say much for your boyfriend’s standards.

Soontobe60 · 28/08/2026 19:55

Jen7425 · 28/08/2026 17:24

Thanks, I would never tell anyone who they can and can't see even if I'd prefer they didn't. It's his choice, but if he chooses to remain close, then I'd expect some sort of boundary that stops this happening again. This wasn't said in jest, and no one smiled/laughed.

Do you really believe that he was being serious and not just trying to make a very bad joke?

CamillaMcCauley · 28/08/2026 19:58

Soontobe60 · 28/08/2026 19:55

Do you really believe that he was being serious and not just trying to make a very bad joke?

What’s the joke? Please make the funny part clear.

To me it sounds like a straight-up insult to a person he’s just met.

Clydebuilt · 28/08/2026 19:58

Doigoforit2 · 28/08/2026 17:04

I can’t imagine what I’d think of someone rocking up to a family/friend bbq for the first time and “giving a speech”about how important their job is and outlining precisely in detail what it involves

I’d have wanted to throw MYSELF on the BBQ!! That wasn’t as cutting as you thought it was….

TFImBackIn · 28/08/2026 19:59

Always judge people by who they're friends with. Family is a bit different, but your partner is choosing to be friends with a racist. Are you mixed race? Is that why this is something your partner's friend is fixated on?

I can't imagine how good my relationship with my partner would have to be for me to put up with this.
