Am I overthinking his self-centred behaviour, or are these warning signs?

I'm in my late forties, recently met a man in his mid fifties, been dating six months give or take a few weeks now.

I've noticed a few things, not sure if they're red flags as such, but stuff that pisses me off. I'm kind of sitting back and observing now as it were. I know us humans are always on our best behaviour at the start of dating and people take time to reveal themselves.

Right from the start with him, though, I noticed he very often just doesn't stop talking. He barely pauses for breath, when he does, and another person tries to speak, he just keeps going. I notice he does it with his adult children as well, so it's not just me. I thought it was nerves at first, but it isn't. He also seems to manage to make every single conversation about him.

A couple of examples. Over the weekend I was talking about renovation work that I'm planning for my house, which needs seriously updating from the 70s. He managed to turn the conversation onto his daughter, who is dating a man with a lot of money who owns a Grade I listed property, which from the sounds of things, is a bit of a pile and needs a whole load of specialised work doing to it. He mentions this a lot, it seems to make him feel good to know his daughter is dating a man with money and prospects, but we were talking about my house, not him, or her, or her boyfriend. I tried to ease back into my plans for the back garden, but off he went again, repeating a story I have heard at least 5 or 6 times now.

On Friday, my mother and I both felt as if we were coming down with something and I texted him to say I wouldn't be meeting with him as we both felt off colour. On Saturday, when I rang him, he banged on about himself for pretty much one hour before asking how my mother was doing. When I said we were both feeling much better there was just silence and then he changed the subject. I don't think he had even read my text that we were ill.

When I had flu earlier in the year, I was ill for two weeks and not once did he ask me if I needed any groceries dropping off.

I saw him earlier today and he did help me out with something, he said he owed me a few favours after I had helped him out, but then immediately afterwards expected a shoulder rub when I was exhausted from lifting furniture. We had a couple of beers together and some dinner and then I got the last bus home. He hasn't even bothered to ask me if I have got in safely. I live in a very safe area, but that pisses me off, it feels like a total lack of care. I could see he was online on Whatsapp for ages after I got back in ..... not to sound like a teenager here.... but he could have just checked in on me.

Feeling as if I'm just a convenience to him in some ways. Like someone to talk at, to get shoulder rubs from and to keep him company when he feels lonely.

He’s not making you happy. Look for someone else.

BibbityBoppityTwo · 24/08/2026 00:35

I have a few family members like this and from my experience they just don’t know how to be any different. It will drive you mad over time. It’s one thing to deal with someone like this semi regularly, but all the time when they’re your partner just becomes completely tedious.

Huckleberries · 24/08/2026 00:47

I think that’s a lot of red flag, sorry

Even if he doesn’t know how to be any other way, why would you want to date someone like that?

JillyComeLately · 24/08/2026 00:55

The incessant talking alone, not to mention all about himself, is enough to bore most people to tears.
I am not one who constantly says LTB, but I would think this would eventually grind you down.
Those flags should be taken seriously.

WerewolfOfLoudon · 24/08/2026 01:00

You've already seen the light @Gamer26 , sounds a self centred bore imo. He should have been offering you a shoulder rub, you were the one who was ill.

Hope your mum is feeling better now too.

CamillaMcCauley · 24/08/2026 01:00

As a previous poster said, this is the sort of person you can have as a friend you see occasionally rather than a life partner.

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 24/08/2026 01:41

Oh God no my lovely, he’s not going to get any better !!

Toothbrusheer · 24/08/2026 02:01

You're an audience for him and he sounds incredibly self-centered... I agree to demote him to occasional friend if you think you'd like to stay in touch, but not a boyfriend.

Bonkers1966 · 24/08/2026 04:55

This won't improve. It's good that you are questioning the relationship at this point. It sounds like you are a bit player in his life while he is the main character.

Mysticguru · 24/08/2026 06:26

He pisses you off! The End.

TokyoTantrum · 24/08/2026 06:31

As others have said, it will drive you mad long term. You haven't really mentioned what you actually see in him, so maybe this relationship has run it's course?

On the subject of "a story I've heard 5 or 6 times", when that happens to me, unless it's a funny story that we were both there for and we're genuinely reminiscing, I gently say "you've told me this one before." Obviously using more tact and a few more words. I used to have a friend who constantly told the same tales over and over and it wore thin.

Hanksness · 24/08/2026 06:34

He sounds absolutely horrendous.
What on earth are you doing wasting your time with a selfish bore?
Dump.

Dependsoncontext · 24/08/2026 06:41

A psychotherapist friend of mine calls this chuntering - endless, meaningless chatter whereas conversation should be about connecting and interacting with another person. I've known many chunterers - they're fine in small doses but think carefully about what you might want in a partnership.

With the checking in about whether you got home safely - I think men don't always understand the feeling of vulnerability about travelling at night that women might have so I would tell him you'd like him to check up on you and see what he does with it.

Mycatmax · 24/08/2026 06:43

He sounds very boring. Just dump him.

arethereanyleftatall · 24/08/2026 06:50

Why ON EARTH would you not have dumped this inconsiderate, selfish, boring, self absorbed man months ago. I don’t get it.

OvernightBloats · 24/08/2026 06:58

He has main character syndrome. You will become more bored and irritated by him.
Tell him he talks too much - it might just make him take a breath (for a second!).

Friendlygingercat · 24/08/2026 07:25

Sounds like the kind of relative you can put up with seeing every few months and grit your teeth through it. But not a BF. He will get worse as he gets older. You can do better!

arethereanyleftatall · 24/08/2026 07:35

There was a thread started yesterday about why it’s so important to be happy single before you date. This is why.

Iaeve · 24/08/2026 07:37

Yuk. I couldn’t stand to be with someone like this for at length of time let alone sleep with them. Ick central!

MarilynMerlot · 24/08/2026 08:41

I know one of these, and I used to really fancy him but after endless self-absorbed wittering without asking me questions about my own life I demoted him. We’re now occasional friends, and that’s mostly because we have to see each other at things sometimes. I ended up feeling resentful of the time spent on him!

WinterBlues26 · 24/08/2026 09:22

I think you need to work out why you are still with him. He sounds absolutely awful and he really pisses you off so why haven't you finished with him? This relationship is showing how little self esteem and self worth you have tbh so maybe it's time to work on that before dating again.

Agree with this. The word 'egocentric' also springs to mind.

FreeRider · 24/08/2026 10:24

Oh gawd, run for the fucking hills!

I've lived this for 17 bloody years....the talking over people, speaking for ages about themselves etc...it ends up being so fucking depressing and annoying!

Mine has been diagnosed with ADHD in the last year, so he now has the perfect excuse for it all...as I tell him, doesn't matter why he does it, as an adult of 55 he needs to find a way to fucking stop it!

I don't live with mine and don't intend to. I have also become very vocal about stopping the constant interruptions and talking over me. He's definitely got far worse since he turned 50. If I'd known this was going to happen I wouldn't have dated him in the first place. As it is, a long distance relationship where we see each other on average once a month is all I can cope with.

Justanopinionnothingmore · 24/08/2026 11:18

Oh wow not only is he self centred, he didn't even offer to help when you had flu or anything. Not a keeper throw him back.

I can talk a lot but I do not bang on about myself for an hour and I always listen and ask other people about themselves. When I say I talk a lot, it is also talking to others about their situations and what not. Like can keep a conversation going type thing.

He has absolutely no self awareness.and the selfishness would put me right off. He is not good enough for you.

You can have ADHD and some self awareness. Tell him to not interrupt you. It's rude.
