Breath smelt like a bonfire

Mentioned to my boyfriend that in the night his breath smelt strange after he'd got up to 'go for a wee'. He couldn't understand why and was trying to think of causes!

So I heard him get up in the night and go to the bathroom (not unusual for him to do this) although I didn't hear him wee, he said he had a posh one so he didn't wake me up. He didn't know I'd woken up until I told him in the morning. When he got back in bed his breath smelt of a bonfire. A strange smokey smell, but no smell on his skin or in the air.

He doesn't smoke (it didn't smell of cigarettes anyway). Anyone think this is strange?

Omg that is thee maddest thing because lately I keeo smelling chimney smoke. Nobody else can. I have all other signs of it too. So glad I saw your comment. I thought I was going mad xx

It’s so bizarre, has only happened a handful of times and only in the car, I’ve got in and can smell a whiff like stale cigarette smoke. DH very rarely drives our car and only for drop offs in the morning so it wasn’t like he’d given someone a lift who’d been smoking. Nentioned it to someone at work and they told me it was a symptom of peri.

Laphroaig single malt has a very peaty/smokey aroma and taste

It does but whenever my husband drinks it the waft of alcohol hits far quicker than the smoky smell!!

This was once ? My first thought was diabetes. The smell can vary.

I have genuinely got up on the night for a shot of whiskey when I couldn’t sleep once. Worked a treat

So admittedly I later looked through his stuff for anything unusual and couldn't find anything. But then if he's intend on hiding it, it could be anywhere!

Try looking in the cistern

CoastalCalm · 06/07/2026 11:20

Decanted into an innocent looking bottle of mouthwash or similar ?

I agree with others that it’s whisky. If he ‘used to have a drinking problem’ 🙄 but still drinks and now suddenly drinks like a normal person, he’ll be hiding it. Especially if all his friends drink whisky daily. It will be whisky.

I’m a recovering alcoholic. The average person would have had no idea I was drinking. I was rarely seen with a drink except on the weekends or out to lunch. It was more of a breezing on through to the loo, so will neck a large glass of wine on the way, or I’d drink when I went out to the garage to get something. I had wine everywhere so it was easy to do. I also used to drink at the 3am wake up to wee because my anxiety would be awful and it would help settle me back to sleep. I’d bet money that’s what it is.

It’s pretty much impossible to be a problem drinker and then just go back to drinking ‘normally’. It just goes underground, which is likely what you’re seeing here. As a one off, maybe not a big deal, maybe he just had a rough day and felt you’d judge him if he openly poured a drink. If it’s a regular thing though, it’s a problem.

Have noticed similar when dh's asthma is bad, and he's using an inhaler.

moderate · 06/07/2026 13:30

Might be a weed vape.

Just to confound things further... you can get whisky-flavoured vapes!

Sorry about your DH.

After I queried the inhaler he even sprayed it into the cap to see if it replicated the smell.

Oh no.

I had an alcoholic husband.

Don't mention it again. Let him think he's got away with it.

DO go and explore the bathroom when he's not home. It'll be hidden somewhere. Sniff all his male products as it could be decanted.

Honestly, I'm sorry. And if he finds out you know he'll say all the right things and cry and promise but he'll just get better at hiding it.

cheesecadet · 06/07/2026 18:27

I really didn't think that much of it, it more confused me than anything.

Thank you for all the messages.
