Breath smelt like a bonfire

Mentioned to my boyfriend that in the night his breath smelt strange after he'd got up to 'go for a wee'. He couldn't understand why and was trying to think of causes!

So I heard him get up in the night and go to the bathroom (not unusual for him to do this) although I didn't hear him wee, he said he had a posh one so he didn't wake me up. He didn't know I'd woken up until I told him in the morning. When he got back in bed his breath smelt of a bonfire. A strange smokey smell, but no smell on his skin or in the air.

He doesn't smoke (it didn't smell of cigarettes anyway). Anyone think this is strange?

If you were half asleep though and didn’t stick your nose in his craw then it could also have been a half dream OP. I’ve sworn I’ve seen a wasp flying in our bedroom in the middle of the night before and landing on my knee but when the light went on, nothing. The brain can trick you when it’s been woken at random.

Tobacco flavoured vape? Smells like a bonfire especially if the liquid catches slightly.

Whiskey smells like alcohol as well as smoke.

Edited

Yeah this, like the end of a vape as well when the liquid ends

workingcocker · 05/07/2026 22:08

What’s a posh wee?

Whisky/Scotch like Ardbeg, smells like peat. If you're not familiar with it, find some and try. You'll recognise it instantly if that's what it is.

It's an extremely strong smell and absolutely does smell like certain kinds of wood smoke - and a lot more 'bonfire' than 'campfire', if that makes sense.

That doesn't mean he's a raging alcoholic or anything, but he shouldn't be lying to you.

Edited

If someone is getting up in the middle of the night to swig whiskey in secret- I would say that absolutely is a sign of an alcoholic.

Yes, I've been sure a different person has got back in bed with me.

Maybe the smell of bonfire drifted in to the bedroom when he was moving between rooms, your brain's recognised it and it's got lost between reality and dozing dreams.

What’s a posh wee?

A sit-down wee, I guess. Never heard it called a posh wee, but pretty sure lots of men do this in the night to save them putting a light on to aim.

I was wide awake.

Electronic cigarettes?

They aren’t vapes and they aren’t cigarettes. They are a combo and very strange indeed. Tried one for the first time this week.

The whisky isn’t a bad shout though. Have you looked to see which ones he has?

Ones from Islay are very Smokey.

So he doesn't wake me he sits down to wee instead of a long stream waking me up...so he says!

What sort of age are you OP? I kept saying our car smelt of cigarette smoke when I got in it, apparently it’s a sign of perimenopause! Was it definitely his breath?

Omg that is thee maddest thing because lately I keeo smelling chimney smoke. Nobody else can. I have all other signs of it too. So glad I saw your comment. I thought I was going mad xx

He's been getting up for all the time I've known him, says he's always done this (he's in his 40's). Don't think he's had any blood tests. No other symptoms but has asthma. Said he'd not had his inhaler in the night. Is that how diabetes can smell?

I put it in relationships rather than general health as I'd not thought it could be related to health reasons!

My son has Asthma, his breath smells even with perfect dental hygiene....

Has he been getting up in the night for a shot of whisky?

I think this is what he is doing too. I’d be looking for his stash in the bathroom

This was just the once and on his breath. I've had no other weird smells. Been peri for years but never experienced that ever.

Laphroaig single malt has a very peaty/smokey aroma and taste

cheesecadet · 05/07/2026 22:21

So admittedly I later looked through his stuff for anything unusual and couldn't find anything. But then if he's intend on hiding it, it could be anywhere!

Oooh that’s a good shout. Terrea smells just like burning plastic

Back for the bathroom cabinet ? I between his bottles of stuff even ? In plain site .Do you have a bath panel or anything .
Id actually walk the path he would walk to the bathroom and think where would be easier to hand .

I was wide awake.

So was I when I saw the ‘wasp’. My mum was having a conversation with me but my brain hasn’t fully woken up. It’s most commonly called hypnopompic hallucinations

Please don't make out I was hallucinating. I woke up when he went to the bathroom and he got back in bed and I smelt it coming from his mouth.

OK it was just an idea… it’s something that’s pretty common but you’re clearly defensive because you think he’s drinking. If that’s the case smell his bottles of toiletries… he may have refilled one with whiskey to hide it.

Of course, yeah I mean it definitely could be. It could also just be someone who's struggling to sleep and is embarrassed about using drink to deal with it.

That wouldn't excuse him from lying about it, but still.

cheesecadet · 05/07/2026 22:33

He said one of the reasons his wife left him was because of his drinking but he's always maintained that he now only drinks at the weekend. I see him for a few hours in the week and then Sat to Sunday tea time. He'll have a few beers on a Saturday night that I'm aware of.

Definitely wood smokey smell. I can't say for sure that I was awake before he went but when I fell asleep his breath was fine.

Did you ask him? I mean, why not just say!

Imbusytodaysorry · 05/07/2026 22:39

I you should order some breath tests on Amazon and randomly surprise him next Sunday when he has came back from the toilet . If he has a problem and is lying to you then yes I’d be asking him to take the test .
I think it sadly sounds like he hasn’t controlled the drinking it’s that he has learned to hide it.
