Do some people choose careers mainly to meet potential partners?

I've never come across this in real life until now, but a woman I recently got to know wanted a job in the music industry simply so that she could meet and date musicians. It sounds a bit mad really. But do people do this?

I don’t know but I don’t see what’s wrong with it.

PrettyLittleRose · 01/07/2026 14:58

Not known anyone do this since the 1960s/1970s.

thesealion · 01/07/2026 15:00

Lol. Did you meet me? I used to work in the music industry and my motivation was to shag rock stars. I left that industry and do something a lot more fulfilling now because I realised what a shallow and toxic industry it is and there’s a lot more to life than sleeping with famous people.

Loubissou · 01/07/2026 15:08

Only once. She wanted to marry an Army Officer, so joined the Army.

I've always fancied musicians myself, but would never go into that industry simply to shag/date/marry them (plus I have zero musical talent (and no skills in the "behind the scenes" jobs such as engineering etc)
Good for you though!

Oh I know. I've heard of the term "Mrs Degree" too (that's more American I think though).

To be fair, this was motivation when I was 18. I did go on to work in the industry until I was about 26 and there were other aspects of the work I enjoyed (and plenty I didn’t). But like I said I grew up pretty quickly and realised what a stupid reason that was to be there. I did manage to shag a couple of rock stars though!

It did!

Never has this crossed my mind

mondaytosunday · 01/07/2026 16:45

Ah - I’d have said generally no but musicians certainly seem to attract some women! My DH was a lawyer and he adamantly did NOT want to marry one! Coincidentally my two most serious relationships have been with lawyers! But I’m not one (creative industry).

coocoocachoop · 01/07/2026 17:43

When I went to college in the US there were a high number of female dropouts in the class I was in, I asked someone about it and they said they only enrolled to get their M.R.S and de-enrolled when that was signed, sealed and delivered. Took me a minute to realise what MRS meant, I thought it was a qualification the idea of marriage was so far from my mind at that time 🤣

Don't do yourself down with 'manage to'. They are pretty easy to shag once you are within eyesight of them.

I know a woman who got a job as in an office in the City just so she could meet a rich banker and marry him. It worked eventually. Her husband is just a cash machine. She is not a pleasant woman.

Lexy2345 · 01/07/2026 17:50

A fellow student nurse openly admitted to doing her nurse training (this was in the old days, hospital based rather than university) in order to marry a doctor. She did too, and dropped out after 2 years. I thought she was as shallow as a puddle and I sometimes wonder if she lived happily ever after.

Fedupcreative86 · 01/07/2026 15:20

Edit to add, having seen the post above mine, she was a nurse too. Definitely very shallow!

Not sure. Last time I saw her was just after she had broken an arm, arm wrestling one of them over a beer! 🤣

I was in the Army myself for a bit and did end up marrying another officer. Much as I love him, I don't understand the broader appeal of 'Army Officer' as marriage material. They are just blokes like any other bloke, of variable calibre and attractiveness. And not even particularly high earners either.

Ibi · 01/07/2026 18:20

I had a friend who had a thing for doctors, so she became a surgeon. Didn’t end up marrying a doctor, she married the guy who did her gardening.

I was first in my family to go to university and did a very male dominated subject 30 years ago. I had some very, very weird interactions with female staff members every so often. It wasn't until years later when I met my husband (who did a completely different, more equally split subject) and he told me that you go to university to get a first or meet your spouse (for the record neither of us did either) that I finally understood that some of my female professors had wrongly assumed I'd only gone to nab myself a man.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 01/07/2026 21:39

No. Don't shit where you eat.

Jollyhockeystickss · 02/07/2026 11:00

I was gonna say it worked for paula yates but then sadly it didnt

CaffeinatedSeagull · 02/07/2026 11:28

I can’t recall knowing anyone of either sex where it was the main driver.

Was definitely a secondary factor for a handful and that was also for people in the music industry and especially its PR.
