Not that I know of in any relationship of my family or friends

Zanatdy · 23/05/2026 23:05

My mum used to give my dad pocket money and not sure why he stood for it.

PermanentTemporary · 23/05/2026 23:10

No need, I earn a decent salary.

mazma · 23/05/2026 23:11

I’m wondering because what’s the point being together if he doesn’t give you any money? What else can you share together? I’m trying to understand relationships

This must be rage bait

TheyGrewUp · 23/05/2026 23:13

DH often bungs me.a £50. I earn my own money, he just does.

Ponderingwindow · 23/05/2026 23:17

Why would he need to give me money? We both have access to the accounts. I can just go to the atm myself.

we pay no attention to who earns what money. Sometimes I have to earned more. These days he earns more. It is all our money.

PygmyOwl · 23/05/2026 23:18

No need as all our money is shared.

EBearhug · 23/05/2026 23:21

Mum used to go into town after he was paid, she'd pay a load of bills and then write a cheque for cash, which would include pocket money for my, my sister and Dad. He earned the money, and he could get more out if he was in town, but he wasn't always in town (we were out on a farm,), so I think it was just easier for Mum to get the cash.

PullTheBricksDown · 23/05/2026 23:29

No, I have a job and I'm not a child. He will buy me things I like or treats from time to time, as I do for him. We give pocket money to our DC.

howshouldibehave · 23/05/2026 23:36

No, we have a joint bank account so I just use what I need.

As for ‘what’s the point being together if he doesn’t give you any money’

What about being in love? Wanting to spend time together?

TheCurious0range · 23/05/2026 23:37

No I earn more than he does, I don't give him pocket money either. How odd

Yeah, my mum always used to get cash out and give my dad his for the week but he had his bank card and credit card too. She just got it while she was doing the banking.

I just robbed my husband of all his cash then gave him a 20 back for the weekend. My cards aren’t working properly and he’s out of town.

All our money is joint. However we both have a set amount per month 'pocket money' for our personal spending - for him it is albums and gig tickets, for me it is craft materials and books. We also have shared fun money in the budget for meals out, or theatre trips, gigs etc that we go to together.

☺️ I work with a man whose Wife deals with all their finances. His salary is paid into his Wife's account and he has to ask her for absolutely everything he wants to buy. He says she sources the best deal.

He gets £10 a week for vending machine snacks at work! He won't mind me saying this as he tells everyone himself!

I do struggle with that! Especially when he's agonising over whether to have a can of Coke today or tomorrow! ☺️

Each to their own though! They are happily married.

KojaksLollipop · 24/05/2026 00:01

The OP sounds like you’re asking if husbands give money to their wives relatives. Is that right? Absolutely not, let them earn their own.

I earn my own money. My dad used to get pocket money out of the family weekly finances but if he needed more he’d just get it. It was just an easy way to budget when money was tight. He used it for going to the bar in nights out with my mum, so she got half of it back, lol

I take it you're a stay at home mum and don't have any money of your own?

They're out in full force tonight.

I've been a SAHM for more than 20 years and no, I don't get "pocket money" (although every now and then we joke about it - DH tries to wind me up by mentioning the concept).

We have a joint account and also individual bank accounts. In practice, we use the joint account for pretty much evetything. But I think it's best to have a good bit of money in individual accounts with different banks as well, if only in case of anything going wrong with the main account.

The vast majority of our expenses are joint ones (household, kids, holidays, etc). Each of us also spends on stuff which is just for ourselves. But neither of us has a set amount for this. We have fairly similar attitudes to spending; we might get some nice luxuries, but we can afford it and neither of us is going to do anything stupid.

mindutopia · 24/05/2026 08:08

No, we have a joint account for joint expenses. I pay for my own personal expenses with my own money. I’m not a child.

Yup same

singthing · 24/05/2026 10:48

I've never been married, but when in a LTR it would have been odd given I earned considerably more than my boyfriend did.

CeliaCanth · 24/05/2026 10:55

I do know of two women who are given a monthly “allowance” from their husbands. Not sure I’d be comfortable with that arrangement (or terminology, come to think of it).

DoAWheelie · 24/05/2026 10:58

My granddad did with my Nana, but they would be over 100 years old if still alive.

I don't know anyone my age or the generation above me who live like this. Most either have joint finances, or separate ones with the woman earning more.

What else can be shared? Home ownership, bills, cooking, driving, laughter, grief, life.

Been married 30 years and my husband hasn't given me pocket money, why would he?

Do you give your husband pocket money?
