How to address cheesy comments from someone I otherwise really like?

I have been seeing a new guy for around 3 months. I really like him and he is very kind, level headed and generous, he is good company and really makes me laugh too. But sometimes he is so cheesy with his words, it’s verging on giving me the ick. He says things that I’m sure he thinks is ‘cute’ out of the blue in the middle of us talking about other things and it’s as if he’s rehearsed them before saying them. I don’t want to end something over this but I’m not sure I can put up with it.
i did joke with him that he loves a cheesy one liner and he seemed genuinely surprised and nearly upset
Any ideas how I can tackle this?

I can't really picture what you mean?

Crikeyalmightey · 10/04/2026 17:15

"Dave, I really like you, but your cheesy lines are off-putting".

ForTipsyFinch · 10/04/2026 17:16

I would fake gag, but I’m childish and not known for subtlety.

Raddyten · 10/04/2026 17:17

I can’t even write it lol

Oh yes you can! We need to know.

CurlewKate · 10/04/2026 17:21

Examples?

Pinkgin00 · 10/04/2026 17:21

What sort of things is he saying?

SabreIsMyFave · 10/04/2026 17:22

Oh, PLEASE tell us. 😫 😆

Well the one that really put me over the edge was when he was talking about sleeping the other night because it felt quite warm and he said he would still like to cuddle (I said I’m far too warm) and he said he loves cuddling at night because it reminds me how much he likes “gentle moments together and 3am reminders that you’re mine”. I said what? Where did it get that from?

If he’s hurt by it it could be his personality and if you’re not sure you can handle it after only three months it doesn’t sound great tbh. Someone else might love his cheesiness!!

Thundertoast · 10/04/2026 17:23

I know EXACTLY what you mean and I get it. It always makes me think how weird human communication is, that some compliments feel natural and some feeling... rehearsed? Performative? So hard to pinpoint it!
Really tough task for anyone ND trying their hardest to understand NT communication I always think!

OriginalSkang · 10/04/2026 17:25

I don't think that's too bad! Although maybe a bit suffocating if you're not in love?

Oooh, yes, a bit cheesy. 'Reminds me you're mine!' Bit cringe. Confused

A bit too soon if you have only been together 3 months.... ?

OriginalSkang · 10/04/2026 17:27

Better than an "my ickle snookums" type thing.. but I can see that it sounds a bit like he's been waiting to drop it in

I don't know the OP. Some people say that kind of thing after a couple of weeks!

Fair enough. Smile I guess it depends on the individual.

SliceofTosst · 10/04/2026 17:31

I get your drift OP - gentle moments - bit sickly 😂

Holesinmesocks · 10/04/2026 17:48

I feel a bit nauseous with stuff like that that.

Colinswife · 10/04/2026 18:09

I know exactly what you mean. I once went out with a very good looking, really lovely guy but after a year of him pointing at the sky and saying "fluffy white clouds" in a baby voice, crying out "hunger!!!" whenever he was hungry and writing me poetry calling me his "lioness" I could quite easily have punched him in the face and I am not a violent person.

pastaandpesto · 10/04/2026 18:15

Blimey OP, you're dating chatGPT!

WTF -Good looks just can't make up for that

Elanol · 10/04/2026 19:17

I had a boyfriend that used to whisper in my ear during 'tender' moments. It wasn't attractive. It was a weird tone. Sort of how I imagine a serial killer would sound telling his victim about their fate....
