Harsh posters on mumsnet

GoldenGoldenGolden · 01/03/2026 20:36

Does anyone else think mumsnet is really harsh compared to other forums on the internet? I seen a post on another group and the poster got nothing but support and kind comments yet I know if the exact same post was posted here she would be ripped to shreds. Why is that, why are posters so much harsher on here?

Yes, I posted on here once a long time ago and everybody was so horrible about my situation and managed to convince me to have an abortion. I couldn't live with what I'd done and absolutely spiraled in regret. I realise I probably shouldn't have taken the advice of strangers, but I was hormonal and feeling vulnerable. Thankfully, I got pregnant again on my next cycle and got my baby. Extreme example but it shows how much impact words can have, and mumsetters should think twice before commenting so harshly on lives they aren't living.

Oh god that’s awful im so sorry that people were so nasty to you, honestly I’ve been called some vile names on here, had horrid accusations and mumsnet don’t care when you report it

I'm gonna say YABU @GoldenGoldenGolden because it's only a few posters who are like this. Many posters are really nice, kind, and funny. You do get some threads where you get quite a lot of posters being mean and harsh to an OP, but it's often when the OP is being a bit ridiculous, like asking AIBU when they clearly are.

But many threads feature many posters who are really helpful and kind.

And there are many MANY boards on here (apart from AIBU and CHAT and RELATIONSHIPS) where people can go. All sorts of hobby boards and support boards. It can get a bit vicious on AIBU, but I haven't seen much nastiness on this board (Relationships.)

redjeans28 · 01/03/2026 21:35

Yes, the step-parenting board is an absolute shit show. I posted on it once, never ever again.

ShakyBake · 01/03/2026 21:35

I find the Trump hatred predictable and boring on here. I'm no Trump fan but the moment anyone shows him in a slightly positive light they are shouted down by the mob, I sometimes think they are paid to do this

As I said this poster would have been ripped to shreds on here so even if she did something that was bad no one even so much as said anything nasty of negative to her, I can imagine the names she’d be called on here and torn apart.

I agree Mumsnet can be horribly harsh. Sometimes responses seem to assume the worst, and it must feel like pile-ons to the OPs. It doesn't help when responders haven't read updates from the OP. Probably worst in some of the more popular sections like AIBU. My comparison site is Ask MetaFilter, which currently has paid moderators but also has a long-standing policy of constructive answers only.

I do report "aggressive or unhelpful" comments, and would encourage others to.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 01/03/2026 22:07

@reallyalurker thanks for that link, I’ve never heard of that site before.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 01/03/2026 23:50

I completely agree.

Straight talking can come over as harsh and be hard to hear, but it's useful. But so many threads have posters who seem to come in with an agenda to tear down the OP, no matter what. They'll twist and distort what has been said in an extraordinary way and it's very distasteful.

Its sad observing how upset some posters become when they feel vulnerable and they are being treated with active cruelty at times.

While posters continue to use inflammatory and harsh language, and while the mods fail to uphold what Justine promised, then yes, unfortunately we will have this discussion again, I suppose.

🤷‍♀️

Yes. I'm medically trained and not from the UK but the appalling comments about minorities such as transgender people on here can be scary.

This wouldn’t surprise me. We know a lot of the pro pali protesters are paid to be there. So much for democracy

Monty27 · 02/03/2026 01:08

You get what you ask for which is opinions. Right?
What is it that is wrong? Don't post if you don't want to risk unwelcome opinions @GoldenGoldenGolden

There’s opinions then there’s calling someone names. No one asks for that

Yes exactly, and no it’s not just “having an opinion” 🙄 you can have an opinion without being vile to someone

OP posts:
NoCommentingFromNowOn · 02/03/2026 02:12

@GoldenGoldenGolden Well at least you’re getting some great examples of the sort of posts you’re talking about aren't you?!

This place will never change. Mods are non existent. Justine doesn’t give a shit and is selling up.

Back to Reddit then.

Seriously though, how can he be seen in a positive light? He’s a narcissist in the extreme.

DeepRubySwan · 02/03/2026 04:18

Yes I do think so and I have been shocked by some of it. It seems about 70% nastiness and 30% genuine care and advice. Some of the comments are really awful.

FloofBunny · 02/03/2026 04:28

I agree.

IME forums that have a lot of Americans are much nicer.

I'm not going to get into an argument with you of the rights and wrongs with Trump, as said I'm no fan. But just accept that throughout life others will have a different opinion from yourself

I’m so sorry to hear this. Proof that we shouldn’t be tolerant of other people having different opinions and ‘saying it how it is’ if they make people feel like this.

I would never ever ask for help on here, sometimes you get it, sometimes you get shoved into the gutter and trampled on while a drunken crowd watches. It’s not worth taking the chance when there are other, better places to ask.

Proof that we shouldn’t be tolerant of other people having different opinions and ‘saying it how it is’ if they make people feel like this.

How are you going to stop people having 'different opinions'? If you want your own private echo chamber, you are not likely to get it online. Or in real life, for that matter.
