Zero attraction on first date

I went on a first online date with a guy and there was zero attraction. Reasonable conversation but I simply couldn't see him in a romantic light. When I first saw him when I arrived at the pub I was a bit taken aback with disappointment. I had wore flat shoes because I'm 5ft 9, he was supposedly 5ft10 in his profile and wore trainers but he was still definitely shorter than me. So that irritated me a bit that he lied about that, however I just didn't find his whole body language and mannerisms attractive either.

What do you do in these situations? I've read what I've written and it makes me sound terribly judgmental. Do you give it more chances with people like this who seem nice and interested in you?

I had a workman round the other day. He had to ring a couple of people for advice re the job. He was talking about my ceiling height and twice on the phone he said "well I'm 6ft and it's probably twice my height". I just sat there looking incredulous! I'm 5ft8 and he was significantly shorter than me!! These were just work mates so no one he was trying to impress. I can only assume he is genuinely deluded about his height! Or just so used to lying about it. So I do think men have a thing about making themselves sound taller.

Anyway, you have zero attraction to this man so just don't see him again. He wouldn't be thinking twice about cutting you off if he didn't feel a spark. So don't over think it. I've made the mistake before of giving people more of a chance and ended up in relationships where I actually didn't even really fancy the person! I kept telling myself other things were more important but attraction is important.

Come on! Everyone tells small lies/exaggerates on their profile. A short man adding an inch to his height is pretty standard, considering how many women impose a shallow, blanket ban on dating any man under 5’10”. Many women I know knock a few years off their age. They are not “lying to you” they are trying to present the best possible version of themselves in a shallow, brutally competitive environment.

Nope.

I didn't lie about anything and the blokes I met who I would have considered moving forward with didn't lie either.

The guy I just celebrated a lovely year with who I met on Tinder was completely honest in his profile and initial chat.

To me any initial lies about heights, age etc are complete red flags.

Don’t feel bad about being put off by a lie.

Don't thnk twice about it. First dates are to discover if there is a spark. If not, you move on. It wasn't one thingf that put you off, it was zero attraction, including his mannerisms. That tells you he isn't right for you.

Agree , I’m the very same .
I always only use recent pics , never use filters, it’s so stupid , why would you want to be setting yourself up for disappointment turning up to meet someone who thinks you look 10 years younger .
I also don’t get why people lie about their age ..
You need to be completely honest if you have any chance of meeting anyone decent .
Telling any kind of lies is a deal breaker for me .

ForTipsyFinch · 26/01/2026 13:34

If he has contacted you since to ask to meet again I would say thanks but no thanks etc. But he may not contact you again after anyway - when I was online dating I always judged my response on what or if they messaged after.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 26/01/2026 14:26

You just don’t go on a second date. That’s what dates are for.

Yeah it's kinda of weird but don't we all put flattering photos of ourselves

That's not lying. Lying would be putting a photo of someone else and saying it's you.

oopsHereItIs · 26/01/2026 14:58

Too many men lie about their height and that, in itself is an insecurity.

I wore heels on first dates to check that he is taller than me in heels (that's one of my criteria!), I'm 5'7".

No need to feel bad, you need to like him first.

Allseeingallknowing · 26/01/2026 15:35

I wonder if the height ceases to be so important if he has a bulging wallet!

Goodness me what ridiculous comment women are allowed to earn their own money nowadays you know.

We don't need to put up with substandard men just because they have more money than us.

Just thinking about all the celebs who married much shorter, very, very wealthy men…Very cruel to label shorter men sub standard!

No, don't see him again. I'd text saying "didn't feel a spark, all the best...." and if he gets pushy then block but save the texts in case you need them later.

This

Angelic999 · 26/01/2026 16:18

It's one date. You don't need to be nasty but just say you didn't see it going anywhere nice to meet you then delete his number.
